From Producer Mark Howard on making music and meeting demands for Neil Young, Bob Dylan and more | Globe & Mail by Brad Wheeler:
Making noise with Neil Young: Neil only records in the three days before the full moon. It takes six months to make a record. Le Noise, with Daniel Lanois, was supposed to be an acoustic record. But it turned into an electric collage of certain sounds. Neil had a mahogany Guild guitar from the 1960s. I put a subsonic harmonizer on it. When you hit the low note of the guitar, it was like having a synth-bass playing along with you. As soon as Neil heard it, he just lit up. He’d never heard an acoustic guitar sound like that. Neil is the master of sound. So to develop a sound for him was groundbreaking for me.More at Listen Up!: Recording Music with Bob Dylan, Neil Young, U2, R.E.M., The Tragically Hip, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tom Waits .

He was on the CBC the other day. Great Neil story about making Le Noise!! My new favourite Neil story.
Yes, Syscrusher. Amusing anecdote on making Le Noise.
Couldn't interrview embed here on TW, but linked above. The Neil story is in the 1st couple of minutes.
I got the book for fathers day and couldn't put it down, it's excellent! There's a great bit about Neil yelling at his chef Alaska for letting his blueberries touch plastic. Also Le Noise cost Dan Lanois $250,000 to make, but he only got paid $25,000 for it and missed out on a grammy bonus because the grammy for best rock song isn't directly tied to production. Other than funny tidbits like that, it was really interesting to learn about how he set up rooms and buildings for albums and how all the different artists work and their idiosyncrasies. Lucinda Williams doesn't think she has a good singing voice!!! Anyways, top 5 Mark Howard engineered albums (according to me).
1. Oh Mercy - Bob Dylan
2. A World Without Tears - Lucinda Williams
3. Time Out of Mind - Bob Dylan
4. Le Noise - Neil Young
5. Day for Night - The Tragically Hip
ELLIOTT ROBERT RIP
