“Stumblin’ with Neil": Kurt Vile's Curated Neil Young Archives Playlist #1
Kurt Vile's music has been heavily influenced by his love of Neil Young's music.
Now, Kurt Vile has curated his own Neil Young playlist for Neil Young Archives. NYA says:
We’re stoked to start off this week’s Subscriber’s News with the announcement of a brand new feature here at the Archives: Curated Playlists! Every once in a while somebody special is gonna drop in and take you on a personal tour of the music here on NYA, write a little something about their history with Neil’s music, and pick out tunes that’re near and dear and what they want you to hear. We’re especially thrilled to introduce our flagship playlist-auteur, Kurt Vile, whose latest record Bottle it In has been in such heavy rotation in the Archives office that it’s crept into at least one archivist’s dreams. Kurt has been an NYA member from the jump–and we’ve been fans of his since 2008’s Constant Hitmaker–so we figured he’d be the perfect person to kick off this new feature and we were thrilled that he was as into the idea as we were. Kurt is currently on tour with Toronto, Canada’s own The Sadies – so check’em out.
Head on over to those front few folders in the Filing Cabinet to listen to “stumblin’ with Neil…” and read Kurt’s thoughts on the playlist in the description tab. We’re just about as a new to this playlist concept as you are, so we’re not sure how often playlists will rotate or how long “stumblin’ with Neil…” will be available–you best get while the gettin’s good.
Kurt comments on his selections:
I’m proud. I’m inspired. I CAN’T FUCKING BELIEVE the good people at Neil Young Archives have presented me with the greatest of honors in a territory uncharted:Kurt’s playlist includes a wide variety of cuts such as “On The Beach,” “Buffalo Springfield Again,” “Goin’ Back,” and “Albuquerque.”
Guest playlist #1 on the NYA.
Is this real?
“Only real… in the way… that I feel… from day to day.”[…] It would take me forever to explain why every song on this list is important to me.
Each one strikes a chord and precise memory… or many memories… the strings of nostalgia pulled upon once again.[…] All these tunes I picked here punch me in the guts and there are so many, of course, that I haven’t included. This is after all NEIL YOUNG’S ARCHIVE…And though I’m aware I have access to the whole catalogue, I decided to stick mostly with the album cuts I’ve grown up on… But this is often a heady trip (although not exclusively and at other times far from it), I should point out that I decided to narrow my sights to include songs no earlier than Time Fades Away. I love the records all the way back to the Springfield and onward (of course!) but it was fun to start moody…

Watching & experiencing the Archives grow up and expand/refine it's offering of features is gonna be a real trip.
No one's ever done what Neil's doing with the NYA and we get to watch & hear it happen, in real time.
I'm certain that this experiment in cataloging & delivering his music to his fanbase will serve as a blueprint for other artists to connect with the folks who appreciate their art.
...... and WE get to be a part of that pioneering effort.... enjoying ourselves all the way.
Do Not Be Denied.
Totally agree mark.
The Archives journey has been a real twisted road for decades for many fans going all the way back to 1977's unprecedented triple disc anthology release.
40 years later, experiencing NYA evolve in real time each day is nearly beyond comprehension. Who would have thought? Secretly, many of us thought such an experience would happen only once NY transitioned to another dimension.
To build this together with his fan base is the ultimate gift of artist to fan.
We are Not Denied.
We are blessed.
peace
Thrasher, you hit the bull right in the eye with that one......
WOW, Never considered or connected the dots from way back in 1977 on Christmas Morning when I Unwrapped "Decade" & the lifelong journey that would follow....
Also on the timing of the NYA & the "gift" given to the fans whilst the presenter is still Very Present. And Relevant. Long May Neil Run.
I'll be galloping right along fer the ride.
@ ForeverYounger - thanks for feedback. we try to connect the dots when we're not separating the wheat from the chaff. keeps us busy, you might say.
right, "Decade" & a lifelong journey begins. The template was all there in back in '77.
Amazing how Neil had a vision long before the technology was available -- or even imagined.
guess that's what happens when you're lying in a burned out basement with the full moon in your eye.
but what do we know...
