Jeez!
did hope before opening the video this could give definitive answers to zillions questions and interpretations about the real meaning of the song. Well, more confused than before!!!!
Do not know who the designer is neither whether he designed the 'characters' following Neil's instructions or based on his imagination.
Anyway.....not easy to understand which period/place the song refers to:
The red men are kind of 'roadeys' of live rust (?)
video does not show: the Mama, John (Big John?), Emmylou, Daddy, the Brother
Could the weapons be considered modern?
Well, in the end I think that the guy whose face splashed in the sky is the deputy sheriff that Bob Marley did not shoot in 1973, even though the empty rocking chair, at the end of the video, reminds me the one of GrandPa in Greendale!!!!
have a good day
peace&love
Loved it, too. Actually fits pretty well with my decades-old imagination of the lyrics. I think he dropped the key down (maybe to E).
So many evocative lyrics but "Shelter me from the powder and the finger, cover me with the thought that pulled the trigger" is one of Neil's greatest.
Ohhhhhhhh........ I couldn't love that anymore than I do. Chills chills chills.
Cool video, and one that basically evokes the mind pictures I've always had when listening to this song.
One of the key lines that's causing me a little confusion (because I haven't looked at the lyric sheet), but:
Is it, "red men run son" or "red meant run son"?
I see people here saying it's "men" but I hear it as "meant"..
"Take my advice
don't listen to me"
I've always heard it as "red means run, son...numbers add up to nothing". Sage advice from a backwoodsman to his son - "if you see something red, it's always bad - get the hell outta there. And don't let them fool you with figures, 'cause numbers are just another way to take it away from you with a pen."
At least that's how it resonates from me, based on where I come from and who I was raised by.
Original lyric was "red men run" (as in the Hitchhiker version), later became "red means run."
Ehhh, I'm pretty sure Neil is singing "red meant run", not "red men run". Kind of ties in with the big red beacon lyric. The dad is telling the kid, "red mens trouble, son, be prepared". I'm pretty sure Neil isn't talking about red men. Every lyric sheet I've seen for the song says "red means run", so I'm sticking with my belief that on this version that Neil is singing "red meant run".
Anyways, it's a very cool, haunting video. Extremely well done!
Yes, confirms the images I've always imagined in the song. "Official" video, meaning the narrative conforms to Neil's lyrical intention? I don't know that I've ever seen this sort of video presentation exactly, a mixture of portrait, still life, and animation? Empty rocking chair? Twenty-two has joined Emmy Lou. "Red men run..."- this is the first time I've ever heard that. A close to original iteration of the lyric that seemingly must give a different nuance to the story than what it became later, or a slip up? It reminds me of the variation of "Afraid, a man feels afraid" in the Massey Hall version of Heart Of Gold, it has to give the song a different nuance. Can you imagine the effect on a stoned Dean Stockwell of these and the other song lyrics? Had to have been mind blowing (no pun intended). Love everything about this video- song, stripped down acoustic, performance, art and format. I hope there are more on the way, executed the same way.
A Friend Of Yours
No doubt: Red men rhum!
Not going to watch the video. This song is one of my all time favorite songs period. I have this visual in my head when listening to that seems to evolve as the years go by and I really don't want to infect the journey. I'm sure it's a good video but I just can't risk it.
@Dan
You'd better watch it, you'd miss a a great pièce of art!!!
