Irma... You Are "Like a Hurricane" - Neil Young + Promise of the Real @ Mad Cool Festival, Madrid, Spain - June 18, 2016
Give strength to those in the path of Hurricane Irma.
Here is an excellent full video of "Like a Hurricane" by Neil Young + Promise of the Real at the Mad Cool Festival in Madrid, Spain on June 18, 2016.
And some pertinent commentary by Dan S.:
I just finished watching the video of Like a Hurricane and what really struck me was the feeling. The band, the audience, the moment. It was authentic, and you just can't fake authentic. It can only be achieved with talent, passion, and chemistry, and this performance had all three. It's becoming clear to me that Promise of the Real have talent and passion, but now it feels like the chemistry is kicking in big time. Not only are they listening, but now they're completely inside it. It feels like it's coming from the heart and not the head, and that is where Neil is always at when he's playing. Thanks Dan! yes, the feeling comes through from thousands of miles away on a little YT video, indeed.
Chemistry is when music transcends technique and becomes emotion, and that's what I hear in this band. Neil Young has found kindred spirits in these young men, and it has energized him in a profound way. Two and a half to three hour shows happen when there is magic present, and that magic comes from chemistry within a band that lives inside the music it plays, and that is what I felt as I watched this performance.
For me, the number of different songs they play, or the set list is irrelevant. Music is all about that perfect feeling where time just slips away.
One can only imagine the power, feeling and emotion in the festival pit. That perfect feeling when time just slips away...

" once I thought I saw you in a crowded hazy bar " --- which bar is neil referring to ??? --- neil supposedly wrote this song at skeggs point --- a viewpoint on highway 35 ( skyline ) above his , excuse me , pegis ranch --- neil and crew were whiffing marching dust in an old car --- after or before a bar crawl --- the list of bars in the area are --- applejacks , venturis , boots and saddles , maybe duartes --- a couple of these watering holes have burned down --- several more taverns are near the harbor --- ( the echoes 1996 club tour ) --- my band opened that place up for for music --- neil heard about it and followed our lead

I think Neil hung out with Pegi at Buena Vista where she waitressed and Carrie and his local was Mountain House and Alex's
DUARTE'S is where they used to go to have Emma's pies...she's even credited in liner notes of American Stars and Bars
Great spot, Dan. Generally I'm not a fan of the POTR versions of the "Crazy Horse songs", but this one is an exception. Getting Micah onto synth rather than guitar opens up the mix, Lukas pulls back, both giving Neil loads of room to solo. And solo he does. As you say, the chemistry is there and you can hear that.
This is another song that I feel Neil has tended to struggle with in recent years, even with Crazy Horse, but these versions with POTR from 2016 are really powerful.
Scotsman.
PS
"When You Dance" (Leeds 2016? I think) is another Crazy Horse song I think POTR did a really good version of. Another one with two guitars and keys, rather than three guitars.

tom , you are correct , I forgot all about the mountain house / alexs , and the Buena vista . these were in his bar crawling territory , and he did marry the waitress . I avoided these places , they seemed too touristy ? though duartes makes all their $$$ on tourists . we used to live on the ranch behind pescadero , its now a billionaires cow pasture . cheers
Alas, the only constant in life is change....
Neil wrote "Angry World" after a conversation with a local at Mountain House's rustic, log cabin vibe bar
speaking of the mountain house/alexs --- neils harvest moon video is filmed there --- and I swear I recognize some of the people --- plus you can see neils 51 jeepster parked out front in one scene --- I sold him parts for that heap-ster --- years ago ...
