Neil Young had not performed in Vermont before Sunday night since his earliest, pre-Springfield days when his Canadian band had a gig at a ski area. With state legislation voting for all GMO products requiring formal labeling beginning in 2016. As Neil sings the corporation is suing the state to fight the law going into effect. As the Montpelier Times Argus worded it, Neil came to the battleground state to make his case. Before the concert, Neil called a press conference with Governor Peter Shumlin where he gave $100,000 toward the state's legal defense fund to fight the Grocery Manufacturers Association (Neil sings Alliance) lawsuit. When he performed A Rock Star Bucks A Coffee Shop, two thirds through the show and mentioned Vermont's politics, the crowd of 10,000 at the Champlain Valley Exposition Fairground's Grandstand roared their approval of his national campaign.
"Strong Vermont," Neil told us, "willing to stand up while other states are still lying down!" And he sang "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" and "Lookin' For A Love" to us. He introduced Lukas Nelson at the piano to perform "Moonlight In Vermont" for us with Neil and the band backing him. Lukas' voice sounded like his father's. The crowd felt the love of the song. A 21 year old girl sitting two seats down from me fell in love in Lukas at that moment. The audience, the largest in Vermont this summer, was in love with Neil of course from the moment the seed scatterers finished their theatrical introduction to the show and he began "After The Gold Rush."
He never mentioned his support for Bernie Sanders for President. He played past the 11:00 Essex, VT, curfew but was not allowed to play any encores. The Rebel Content Tour satisfied us all. Great setlist. Great performance by Promise Of The Real. Great opening act with Norah Jones' girl group trio Puss n Boots. So when will Neil come back to Vermont?
