‪Vinyl Collection Must Haves #7 - Tonight's The Night by Neil Young‬‏

So does your vinyl collection contain "Tonight's The Night" by Neil Young‬‏?

It's definitely one of our favorites with the black and white labels, runout groove messages, spooky back cover and weird inserts.

So if you're missing TTN on vinyl, Tony's YouTube walks you through with his lovely copy and all of it's hidden joys:
So it seems I never get sick of talking about good ole' Shakey, and tonight I'm spotlighting one of his very best: Tonight's The Night.

This album is perhaps Neil's highest artistic expression. He himself has said Tonight's the Night is the closest he's come to creating true art. Its a dark and wonderful ragged masterpiece that should be in every collection- in my humble opinion. Part of Neil's "Ditch trilogy" and one of my absolute favorites!

Thanks for watching.

Thanks Tony! Very fun.

It's one of the only Neil albums from that era I DON'T have on vinyl. In fact, from EKTIN through Everybody's Rockin', it might be the only one I don't have.

I've seen it many times, but my understanding is that if you don't have a first pressing, it's just not the same. Maybe someday.

I put on that old vynil last night (as Neil advised long tme ago in one of his most famous interview) and I can tell you that the more I listen to it the more I think it is one of his major masterpiece -ALBUQUERQUE #1 (probably the only song he sang 'sober'

Thanks, I enjoyed it.I have 2 copies. The one I bought when it was released. And an unopened copy I bought a couple years ago. Of course the copy I bought in 75 is all beat up and unlistenable. I couldn't remember ever seeing the insert so I had to go look. Sure enough, there it was in the bottom of the sleeve. I think it was so small in the bottom of the sleeve I never noticed it. I opened My other copy and it also has the insert. I never read it before, I would have remembered the part about the handglider falling on the couple. Doug S

Yes, i remember well, at the time , at least in my area, not to many people had it or were listening to it. O f course I had it, as I did all Neil's albums, i must say I felt a little like an outcast, cause I knew Neil was great and other people didn't. Anyway I would play it and eventually some people opened up. We listened to it a lot riding around on old back roads getting high, it was the only state to be in where you could really appreciate that album. So it stays ingrained for me forever, TTN=stoned=country ride=ham @ cheese from a great country deli, funny how the brain works.

Thrasher! Thanks so much for posting this, I really appreciate it. It's an honor to be featured on Thrasher's Wheat (also a little surreal to log on and see my face..but in a good way :) Tonight's The Night is such a classic- perhaps Neil's masterpiece and in my opinion, stands as proof that soul and passion beat precession and technical ability just about every time. Tonight's the Night is basically the perfect 1970's record in that it is so decadent but also manages to point out the dark-side of the glam without finger pointing or preaching. Neil wants you to take his advice while he himself is carefully skirting the thin, crumbling edge that Danny and Bruce Berry went over. The album is a booze soaked funeral for Neil’s friends, but also for the 60’s. Its ragged starkness and emotional punch make it more a "punk album" than Rust Never Sleeps, which is largely considered Neil's punk album. You get the feeling at times that Neil is angry but is through with yelling. The death of his friends has left him drained, and now pleading to "Open up the tied eyes". This is a heavy record and as Neil has said long ago, not for Saturday morning listening.

I love the packaging and cherish my original copies. You can tell by looking at and feeling the cover that this thing ate a ton of ink (the Le Noise LP is oddly similar in this respect). Also that insert is so strange; you have to wonder what the execs at Reprise thought about all this, as well as some other of Neil’s requests through the years.

There is something special about owning an original vinyl copy of Tonight’s The Night- or just about any original record by a band or artist you love. Personally I feel like it’s a true piece of history. It’s the original product and frankly it sounds better. The recent reissues of Neil’s first four LPs also sound amazing on vinyl, as does A Treasure- it’s unbelievable how well you hear everything- the bass, the fiddle, piano all at once. Neil and team did a great job on that and is further proof that quality is top priority them.

Again, I recommend dusting off your old turntable, or buying a new one. There are some FANTASTIC new turntables being made and in all price ranges. Plus today’s vinyl is usually heavier weight and sound excellent. Many many classics and harder to find LPs are being reissued. I am REALLY looking forward to those four unreleased Neil Young records from the 70’s, which were mentioned a while back! Check out my channel (or many, many other people’s channels) on YouTube. Record collecting is a great hobby for a music lover just be careful, it can be highly addictive! Trust me.

Thanks again Thrasher, I really appreciate it. Keep up the good work!

@Tony - thanks again for the spin! A very cool look at TTN.

yes, its TTN ragged rawness that keeps it fresh even 35+ years on. kind of amazing how low fi/tech wins in the long run...

Keep us posted on other vinyl spins. fun stuff.

We just bought a new turntable to listen to some old albums... What a great investment! Now we need to buy a dust cover, album cabinet, some cleaning materials, etc...
