  27. argh! i hope they can fix the synching problem too. the audio is always ahead of the video. same as last show.

  28. I was loving it anyways. We should have just considered that it was a test stream and enjoyed it. Ah well, I'm sure they'll get it right soon!

  29. Looks like I didnt miss much re: the live stream, then.

I saw a little bit of Hey Hey, My My on youtube and it sounded alright, clearly a more laid back version without Poncho's guitar though. And as I thought, quite a different set list to what'd you'd get with him.

Also apparently there were some on-stage issues (lighting or sound)? Which is never good for a live performer; because it distracts them from their performance, compounding the problem.

Let's see what happens at the next one! The last webcast they did in May 2018 was magnificent*, so let's hope they can get it together for the second show.

    1. *hopefully the NYCH webcast from May 2018 can be made permanently available on Neil's site, or at least the edited highlights.

  30. Nils Lofgren is the kind of guy who can play the most complex guitar solo in his sleep. He is an absurdly talented instrumentalist, with a mastery of notes and tones that most guitarists don't even know exist. Watching him play Youngstown with Bruce Sprigsteen (Live In New York City 2000) isn't like watching a "normal" guitarist; it seems like he's playing a completely different instrument to the rest of us, such is his level of unique mastery.

And yet, when he plays with Neil, his style is one of utmost restraint*.

Why? Because he's not there to show off. He knows what the songs are calling for: and that is less extra stuff, more Neil Young. The result is a band where Neil's guitar is pushed front-and-center. Where it can either fly or fall. And given the real possibility of falling, this band (with Nils or Poncho) usually flies. Often you see them huddle together, and the song, on the verge of collapse, just seems to pull itself together. With Neil's guitar soaring out of the mix.

That sense of danger, of being on the cliff edge and rising above it, flying even, is where much of the excitement is.

You can make good music with a safety net, for sure, but you can't make good Rock 'n' roll.

(*Molina has a similar view of Poncho Sampedro's style, another master of this approach for 40 years: " He plays beautiful fills....that do justice to the songs").

  32. NYA, thanks for the effort--I enjoyed what I saw and heard and appreciate your "always better" approach to the platform. And, thanks for the site---it indeed brightens my days.

On a different and looking forward note. How about Atlanta, GA's beautiful Fox Theatre Neil? It's still a beauty, and the sound quality there has been tremendous. Atlanta has grown up over the years, knows its past and has effectively moved forward. Our arms are open--c'mon down.

  33. Pretty lackluster performance, at least the part they showed. New song is nice musically but has the usual clunky lyrics about polar bears.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I dont see why they canceled it. can't they just let it play out and try for better next time? 12 CH songs only 4 in the feed before aborted. We just had 2 solo feeds this week. I appreciate that but in a perfect world the emphasis would have been placed on NYCH. Theres only 2 scheduled. The sign did say See You Tomorrow. Yes it feels obvious now some tunes he dont get near without Sampedro ( watch him prove that wrong today ?lol).
