Micah Nelson as New Crazy Horse Band Member w/ Neil Young - UPDATED

In a Feb 2023 interview with Austin Lifestyle magazine Micah Nelson said:

"I might be going on tour with Neil Young and Crazy Horse this summer."

Both Billy Talbot and Nils Lofgren had previously commented on Micah Nelson's joining Crazy Horse in interviews for the album "World Record".  With Bruce Springsteen on a 2023 tour, Nils Lofgren's E-Steet Band commitment makes him unavailable to tour with Neil Young.

Now Micah has "teased" that he is the new Nils Lofgren/Poncho/Danny Whitten with an Instagram post of LIVE RUST Neil & Crazy Horse album cover.

UPDATE; "Tease" confirmed by Neil on NYA.  See comments below.

Neil Young's 50th Anniversary Concert at the Roxy Night Club, Los Angeles, CA w/ Crazy Horse on Sept 20 & 21 is turning out to be the event of the season.

  1. Neil says that Micah will be rhythm for the Horse in a new letter on the Website.

  2. Thanks for details here DSTH. We kept hearing Micah is confirmed for CH but couldn't find where.

Straight from Horse's mouth apparently, eh?!

  3. @ All : Micah will do a good job as the stringman backing Neil. This is great news. I would love to see NYCH with Micah someday.

I am still recovering from working 12 hours of OT last Saturday, and then hitting White River Amphitheater to see Weezer with my family Sunday. Weezer was great. That’s about as close as I get to modern pop.

I wonder if there are people who have seen Weezer (or any other newer band) 100 times! I’ve met some big music fans. This one great guy I know has seen Neil over 100 times! That is time well spent!

Have a great weekend! Your brother Alan in Seattle

  4. I like Mikah a lot, and I'm sure he'll be okay in this role, but the new Danny Whitten? The new Poncho? Let's pump the brakes a little here, Thrasher my friend.

  5. @ Richie - fair point on reading this literally.

Micah is walking in the foot steps of giants. We wish him all the best.

  7. Micah has been playing with Neil on every tour with PotR. He is road tested, has music in his soul, and the vibe is right to Neil. On the way to this Stage, Micah has played a lot of music. And being Willie Nelson’s son probably helped him grow profoundly as a musician. He has already proven himself on the road, & he will win us all over soon enough. And then what will we say? He walks with Rock Gods & plays with great skill & craft. I am excited about the new NYCH and I hope I get to see them play live. I have not seen that band since Poncho retired.

My mind is open to NYCH being the Real Deal w/ Micah Nelson on backing guitar. I expect it will be wonderful, and hopefully offered up in the NYA.com timeline before long. Yes, more is what we like. More shows, lost albums, alternate takes, Barefoot Floors!
Give the fans “Barefoot Floors” on NYA vol 3 and we will again have the “Holy Grail” lost songs (available now on NYA.com). But of course, once we get our hands on it, other Neil music becomes the next box of “Holy Grail” treasure for us to covet. We will get to enjoy this Neil Young music for the rest of our lives. Long May you run.

  8. PS- I believe that we will get to all meet up later at the Great Gig in the Sky. All the bands, all of your buddies. Danny, Hendrix & Robbie, Jim, Janis, John, Buddy, Tom, Roy, Johnny, Hank, Jerry, Bob, Merle, Peter, Bunny, Ben, Prince, Huddie Ledbetter, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Howlin’ Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Paul Butterfield, and all of those good people, and a dog named King! My old dog Jack the Shiba Inu will be there, barking yet soundless. And the music plays on…. loved ones, buddies, nice folks.

So this is my version of heaven! It’s my Faith, and I believe it. Your Brother Alan in Seattle

PS- Public service announcement: Thrasher makes no money from the Thrasher’s Wheat blog and he politely hears all compliments and criticism. He pays for large amounts of bandwidth with his own money! He gives us all of this for free?! And donates his time creating content?! Please donate money to Thrasher so he can break even, or possibly have TW (Out of the Blue &) into the black on the balance sheet. I will be donating. I believe there is a PayPal link to donate to Thrasher on the TW blog home page. Let’s give him some money to break even on the expenses, not to even mention the countless hours he has worked to make this the best damn rock and roll blog on the internet, as endorsed by Neil Young himself!

  9. It would not surprise me if Micah is responsible to bringing Chris Pierce into Neil's orbit. I don't know if Micah and Chris have collaborated together, but they have both collaborated with Sunny War, so I suspect their paths have crossed. Just a hunch. Anyway, he'll definitely bring some youthful energy to band, as POTR does when they play with Neil.

  10. There is a definite synergy with NEIL on Sunny War's album.Chris Pierce is on three tracks and Micah plays 12 string on a track called Earth ,the same name of Neil's album with POTR.The lyrics for Earth
    So cry for man today
He'll have no place to stay
Cos Earth ain't no lips to say
    She's withering away
Sunny has a lot to say over a lot of issues.Recommend a listen ,she has a host of legends backing her on this album, Anarchist.Solid funk
