Equal Time For Past, Present & Future: Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse T-Shirt - A Message?!

"Equal Time For Past, Present & Future"
Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse T-Shirt

In a followup posting, Neil Young described the recording sessions with Crazy Horse as " nine new songs" recorded in a new barn studio in the Colorado Rockies as "RISING WITH THE MOON" plus references to "The Ghost of Elliot Roberts".

"Crazy Horse recording is under way. The Horse is back in the barn now, shaking off the rust,"  to quote Neil Young from his archive page.

Now comes a new T-shirt design in the Greedy Hand Store: "Equal Time For Past, Present & Future". (Thanks Mike "Road Dawg!)

Now maybe this shirt design has little to do with the possible album title or any songs.  Or maybe it is a hint towards the album's themes?

  3. The phrase comes from the Tonight's the Night era.

  4. @ Hayo - oh really? Can you please elaborate on that?

  5. I think it comes from the Americana era and when his creative juices were spilling over to his books and written memoirs...here's Exhibit "A"

  6. @ Mark from T.O. - thanks much!
Exhibit "A" seems to fully explain.
    From link:

Neil Young explains the impetus behind his new covers album, Americana:

"I started this in about 1964, when I did the first five of the songs, and I was in a band back then, the Squires — before I even met [Stephen] Stills — and we did a lot of these kinds of songs. Never recorded them. And then I got together with Crazy Horse to make a record, and I just finished writing about that time with that band with this book that I’m writing, which is very random — part diary, part projection, part memoir, equal time for past, present, and future, all jumbled together.

It comes and goes. So then I got back and went into the studio with Crazy Horse, and I didn’t have any songs of my own. So I said, “Why don’t we do these? I got a bunch of songs in my head, and we can just play them.” So we played them, and we had a great time."

btw, certainly you know Sharry in T.O.?!

  7. T.O. is a big place and there's Neil-fans-a-plenty around these parts...

I trust Sharry is helping to "keep jive alive" here tho, just like "back in the old folky days".

  8. Great info on the shirt. Thanks to all. I seem to remember that the photo on Americana was originally meant for an earlier Crazy Horse cover, but was scrapped. Don’t remember the specific album, but I know someone here on Thrashers Wheat will know the answer.

    Peace 🙏

  9. The phrase indeed dates back to the TTN tour, as Hayo mentioned - from "Shakey": "Briggs blew hundreds of dollars on crew T-shirts emblazoned with obscure in-jokes like EVERYTHING’S CHEAPER THAN IT LOOKS, EQUAL TIME FOR PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE and HELLO, WATERFACE."

And the "new" shirt was the official shirt for the 2012 Horse tour, as mentioned back then on this here blog (Micah wore one later during some of the POTR shows): http://neilyoungnews.thrasherswheat.org/2012/08/tonight-neil-young-crazy-horse.html

  10. Maybe this shit-fest of a pandemic will be over and we can see Neil and Crazy Horse back on the road in Europe next summer. Unfortunately the UK is a complete disaster right now so not holding out much hope.

  11. thanks Babbo for the clarity...well-done I say (and to Hayo for first slapping it down, minus the provenance).

There ain't nothin' like a friend ... who can tell you you're just pissin' in the wind .

I guess Neil, the good environmentalist that he is, likes to practise recycling both his comments and his merch too !

  12. @ Babbo B. - wow. how about that?

why would we ever consult our own website when we have awesome researchers like you guys?! ha

gee, can't imagine how we forgot this? So, official shirt for the 2012 Horse tour?

hmm. wonder how we determined that? Best we can recall given it's been a decade, is that this was the tour opener.

We see we used a photo by "Barefoot Floors". so. we "think" she must've supplied the detail or E2F. They got the shirt or saw it on some crew member maybe?

@ John - definitely hope that everyone gets a shot @ Neil w/ Horse!

    @ Mark from T.O. - ain't it the truth about a friend.

we can relate to recycling a good phrase. :)

  13. Maybe it’s Neil’s daily MANTRA as he works concurrently on the Archives VIII, NYA Crazy Horse album and as always, sees The Vista.
