Dave Matthews and Neil Young: A Tale of Two Benefit Rebels

Neil Young & Dave Matthews

Recently, we have been remembering that glorious day -- 20 years ago! -- that Neil Young came to town in order to open for the Dave Matthews Band at Scott Stadium, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA on April 21, 2001.

The concert highlight everyone would agree on was Neil Young walking on stage to join Dave Matthews Band on  "All Along the Watchtower".  (Listen to reminisces and concert recording on the play link @ PLAYLIST: Neil Young Deep Dive | WTJU.net - 91.1 FM)

The 2001 concert kicked off the tour to raise funds for BamaWorks,  which supports charitable programs in the Charlottesville, VA area.

The Dave Matthews Band and Neil Young have performed together a number of times together over the years. Matthews is a fellow Farm Aid concert organizer along with Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Neil Young. Dave Matthews has also supported the Bridge School Benefit Concerts on several occasions.

Dave Matthews Band played Neil Young's "Hey Hey, My My" on June 4, 2008 as the first encore at Camden, N.J. It was the first performance of the song by Dave Matthews Band who have previously covered Young's "Cortez the Killer" and "Down by the River."

MusiCares Honors Neil Young As Person Of The Year

Neil Young joined the Dave Matthews Band concert at the Vote for Change Concert Tour on October 3, 2004 at the Palace in Auburn Hills, MI. Dave Matthews introduced Young by saying 'a good friend of ours,' before launching into a 15 minute electric performance of Bob Dylan's 'All Along the Watchtower.'

In what is probably one of the greatest videos of a "Cortez the Killer" cover with a 10 minute plus killer jam. (See Dave Matthews Band with Warren Haynes cover "Cortez the Killer" by Neil Young Live at Central Park, New York City in 2003)

  1. All of these makes me remember, and revisit, some Tim Reynolds. Tim's band, TR3, a 3 piece, was kicking around C'ville throughout 90's too, as the DMB was getting it's shine. Tim would also perform solo shows at some very small venue's. This was well before he ever guested with DMB, or did a duo thing with Dave, or joined the DMB. A masterful guitarist, Tim had a fierce and loyal following, and he loved to play some Neil. My favorite Neil he covered was (and is) Ohio. I found an electric performance with TR3 here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3p7CTFoXcA I have never heard or seen him do a version with lyrics. He would let the guitar do all the talking. As amazing as the electic outings were, my favorite version he did was solo acoustic. So sublime, loops and subtleties, the adventure was never quite the same, but always fulgurant. I have some amazing live recordings of it that I recorded from both the soundboard and audience that I used to spin, but I can't find a complete performance on youtube. This doesn't do it justice, really, (some I saw lasted nearly 10 minutes), and cuts some space travel before and after - I think it is part of a medley here and relatively short - but it is something as opposed to nothing. Some idiot that needs attention steps all over the quiet transition at the beginning, but otherwise it is just magic Tim. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAzLJF18jwo I hope the links work when you copy and paste......

  2. Hey H2OFace! Thanks for the comment here.

Yeah, we've checked out Dave & Tim at Farm Aid a bunch of times. They always seem to play kind of the same set very year, but it's always a good jam just the same.

really fires up the crowd when they just throw down totally.

    will check out the link.

    peace

  3. Tim Reynolds is indeed a masterful guitarist and plays with a delicate touch. I wish more people were more aware of this gifted musician.

    Peace 🙏
