Last year, Neil Young announced a major Archives discovery titled "RUST BUCKET".

Every Friday, another song from the 3 set "RUST BUCKET" concert is being screened on NYA. Today's feature song is the "Days That Used To Be".

Last week, "Love To Burn" clocked in at over 14 minutes+ as Neil and the Horse started to hit stride on the 3rd song in the 1st set. (More on TW @ RUST BUCKET PREMIERE TODAY: "Love To Burn" - Neil Young & Crazy Horse, 1990 Rehearsals | NYA .) The complete concert setlist is 20 songs with a running in total of 3 hours. (See Sugar Mtn for more details).

The RUST BUCKET tapes have been called "the missing link between Ragged Glory and Weld".

As noted earlier, a complete multi-camera video (6 cameras?!) was discovered in the NYA vaults. Produced and Directed by the late LA Johnson, the Neil Young & Crazy Horse concert was filmed on November 11, 1990 at The Catalyst in Santa Cruz, California. (See Sugar Mtn for more details). Consisting of 3 sets, plus encore, the video is titled WAY DOWN IN THE RUST BUCKET.

Here's an update from Audio Engineer John Hanlon on the earlier announced Archives discovery of Neil Young "unearthing" a major 1990 Crazy Horse concert.

  1. The sound on these is truly incredible.

I can't wait to see or listen to the whole thing, in it's entirety. It'll be a whole different animal, once we can hear one song flow into the next.

It's also interesting how different this is from the Weld tour that followed. The Weld tour is amazing, and one of my favorites. It's also not necessarily joyous. As many mentioned, there's no acoustic numbers, just a deathly serious electric cover of Blowin' in the Wind. Even Days that Used to Be, which is a bit more wistful, was dropped early on in the tour. It just didn't fit the whole vibe. So, I love that tour, but it's not exactly uplifting. But that's okay, it's definitely emotive, and it sure moves me.

This show, on the other hand, is much more playful. We have T-Bone, Bite the Bullet, and other "relief" songs. As Neil said, it's the missing link. And it's wonderful.

This song couldn't be more appropriate right now. I can tell you, every single day, I'm gazing back and thinking of the "Days That Used to Be" right now.. It's impossible not to. Ironic how that works.

(As an aside, since I'm all over the place right now, what period for NYA right now. We recently get Fireside Sessions IV, New Greendale Premiere Monday, Rust Bucket Friday and wedged between, we get an expanded Force of Nature and Try? Spectacular)

Enjoy your weekend, everyone. Remember- "Possessions and concessions are not often what they seem, they drag you down and load you down..."

  2. we know what you mean RTG.

yeah, we just watched Days that Used to Be awhile ago and like you, struck by the timeliness of the lines from 30 years ago.

January seems like 100,000 miles away.

While in isolation, many are learning the hard truths of "possessions and concessions", sadly.

Just the other day listening to 45 year old song "Try" w/ the "washing hands" lyrics, likewise we were a bit floored by the eeriness of it all.

And now Landing on Water as Album of the Week, w/ line like "the eye in the sky/the man on the street", shivering at the prescience of neil.

folks have given us grief over labeling neil's work as "prophetic" but don't know what else to call work that pretty much lays out how the future will unfold.

all we can say is that we truly hope that neil has been both right and wrong all along ...

we approach the cross roads, the hour is getting late, the wind is howling ...

    peace
