2011 Tour: Buffalo Springfield or Crazy Horse?

Neil Young's Facebook Post on June 24, 2010

As usual, much speculation about Neil Young's next tour.

The rumor mill got kicked up last summer when Neil posted on Facebook about needing a band to play "Vampire Blues" for the 2010 Gulf Coast tour.

Naturally, the comment triggered lots of wishful thinking about a possible Crazy Horse reunion.

The comment was interpreted at the time by some as an open invitation to Crazy Horse to leave the pasture behind.

Then in the recent American Songwriter Cover Interview with Neil Young And Daniel Lanois by Jaan Uhelszki comes another overt gesture to Crazy Horse:
American Songwriter: You haven’t worked with Crazy Horse for some time. Is there still collaboration with Crazy Horse in your future?

Neil Young: Well, you know, there is, somewhere out there. They have to be together before I can be together with them. They haven’t been doing anything together, so they need to be able to do it. I don’t have the time to support things. I have to go with things that are going to support me. But I think they can do it.

Certainly over the years, we hear more pleas for a Crazy Horse tour than just about anything else - Archives and Toast included. But then you have all of the hyping of a possible Buffalo Springfield Reunion tour.

After the triumphant reunion of The Buffalo Springfield at the 2010 Bridge School Benefit Concerts, rumors have also been swirling about a possible Buffalo Springfield Reunion Tour. Ritchie Furay has discussed it. The Los Angeles Times has stoked the flames and Rolling Stone magazine even went through the motions of laying out opening band possibilities.

So.

Who would you like to see Neil Young tour with in 2011? Buffalo Springfield or Crazy Horse? And why?

Oh yeah, remember, Neil never, ever listens to his fan base.

  4. The Horse definitely. Springfield would be nice but it's not the original line-up for obvious reasons. Plus, Stills's voice is all shot to hell.

Personally would love to see him reform Crazy Horse and hopefully we would get an album or two out of the deal as well.

  5. Springfield opening set, Horse second set, Neil & Stills band 3rd set. I'm still waiting for Neil & Stills to announce their reality show live from the ranch.

  6. Time for NY to officially retire Crazy Horse. There is no way BS will tour in '11.

  7. Neil joins Pearl Jam for their 20th anniversary tour by opening up with the Horse...they opened for 'em before back in '95 at the DC VFC benefits...that's as accurate as any other speculation out there.

  8. Well, he really put the ball in their court. He won't drag them back, they have to do it themselves. Didn't he say in another interview awhile back that he could see getting back together, but that the Horse is a "rougher ride", ie higher maintenance. Rosas/Cromwell, with maybe Anthony Crawford are ready to go, but it wouldn't be the same, of course. But I can't blame the Horse if they feel that he might get them all lathered up, then bolt in another direction. It is a shame.

  9. I'm not arguing with what you're saying at all ZumaBand, but I'm curious - did Neil have to drag them along to record Greendale six or seven years ago? Or were they still fresh from various projects like 'Toast' in 2000? None of them are getting younger obviously and after losing Brother Ben, I would imagine Neil's patience with sloppy playing would be razor thin. I guess we'll all see as time continues to fade away.

  10. Well, i guess we could've put a "Both" selection. And a "Solo" selection too.

Anyways, it seems that if folks voted for the opposite of what they'd like to see, we should be getting a Buff tour this year.

    we shall see...
