Here is a recent contribution on the question of what will Neil Young Archives Vol. 4 contain from Neil Young Unreleased - NYU by Robert Broadfoot.
I am up at 5 am trying to condense V4 into 35 years!!!!.”
Taking Neil’s recent comments at face value - that Archives Volume 4 may span the entire period from late 1987 to the present day, more or less - it is a challenge I think worth attempting to put together a list of the key projects, events, and unreleased songs which he is presumably spending the early hours of the morning trying to sort out. It certainly involves such a long timeframe that some sort of overview of the detail might be useful.
The list that follows does not include absolutely everything which falls in the relevant period. It focuses instead on the main projects which have either already been mentioned somewhere or which are known to exist already. What are consciously not included are films which have already been officially released on physical media, as well as the many live broadcasts/webstreams etc. made by television companies and independent third parties during this period for which Neil may well not have the rights.
What is nevertheless noteworthy about the list is that, despite leaving out films already officially released in one form or another, there are still potentially a great many film projects and live performances involved. There are also proportionately far fewer studio recordings compared to previous Archives Volumes. If Neil were to leave out most of the film projects and live performances from the main Volume 4 itself, for example by handling them separately by means of standalone releases or Performance Series albums and the like, then Volume 4 would be a lot less work for him to complete. And it could also be finished much sooner. The subsequent release of the missing film projects and Performance Series albums could then follow to a more relaxed timetable as separate appendices to the main Volumes 1 to 4. Just a suggestion which I may just put to him!
In any event, I hope that readers will add comments and suggestions about anything that they think is obviously missing from the list. Apologies for any silly errors. Year dates may vary depending on recording versus release dates.
Many thanks Robert @ Neil Young Unreleased - NYU !

... gone but NEVER forgotten ...
After a quick glance at the list, I think Neil needs to reconsider the possibility of a Volume 5. Too much too soon is not a reasonable option in his case. Seriously.
ReplyDeletePeace 🙏
I'm still mystified as to why he's cramming so much into Volume 3. Surely that could be two volumes itself.
ReplyDeleteOne of my prized possessions is a file of Neil performing Who's Gonna Stand Up on the Tonight Show with the roots. Like Rockin' in the Free World on SNL, it's a set blaster!
ReplyDelete@. Unknown : Agreed! That version on the Tonight Show with The Roots is not easily found. It’s not on YouTube or anywhere. I would love to get my hands on it! Hook me up? I would trade for it.

ReplyDeleteI was really hoping that Neil was including the DVd Live in a Rusted Out Garage in NYA volume #3. From the list it sounds like only a CD will be included. I really like videos. Maybe Neil should create a box set called NYMS & release all the videos in one set.
