Speculation on Neil Young Archives Volume #3

Back in 2021, Neil Young said that Archives Vol #3 would be "Coming in 2022".

And then we learned that NYA #3 would NOT be coming in 2022.

STAYING ON SCHEDULE IS HARD

Which brings us to this "Informed Speculation" on what Neil Young Archives Volume #3 might contain from Lone Red Rider via  Neil Young Unreleased - NYU. (*Thanks Lone Red Rider & Robert B.! also, see comments below.)

As the detailed notes demonstrate, much of this 'speculation' is based on Neil's own statements on NYA.

In a batch of Letters To Editor on NYA in 2021,  Neil Young responded to various queries and threw out some tantalizing tidbits of treats:

  • Neil Young Archives Vol #3 -  coming in 2022
  • Berlin (In Concert Film, 1982) - planned for NYA Volume 3
  • Trans Animated -  planned for NYA Volume 3
  • Boarding House 1978 -  planned for NYA Volume 3
  • Johnny’s Island -  planned for NYA Volume 3. "Johnny’s Island, is not ‘Island in the Sun,’ but does include some of the music from that unreleased record, in addition to other rare unheard songs."
  • Oceanside Countryside -  planned for NYA Volume 3
  • A Snapshot in Time" 'Barefoot Floors' is also included on NYA Volume 3 in ‘a snapshot in time’ disc 3. This is a documentary tape of me playing the songs on stars n bars for Nicolette Larson, Linda Ronstadt and David Briggs before we went into the studio. I think it’s the best recording. It may have been done separately in the studio."
  • GIVE TO THE WIND - planned for NYA Volume 3, Disc 4. "We have the rehearsal tape done at the Nashville Musician’s Union Hall the previous day with Nicolette and I and the entire orchestra."
  • Weld, Ragged Glory, and Freedom - will be available in Hi-Res on August 6 2021 in ORS Box #5.
  • RAGGED GLORY EXTENDED - part of ORS Box #5.

So --  as always -- we'll just have to wait and see.  Lucky us, there's always something on the horizon with Neil.

  1. Considering the trend set by the first two boxes, I expect "Hitchhiker" and "Songs For Judy" to be repeated in Archives Vol. III. Ideally, the box would pick up immediately after those, but we'll find out when we find out.

  2. Speculation (as fun as it may be) is a dangerous pastime. Concerning ‘Hitchhiker’ & ‘Songs for Judy’, Neil has said he wasn’t going to add previous releases to the Archives……. but well know when we know.

    Please 🙏

  3. I created that list. Here is some context. Just like there was an early version of Vol2 which spanned 1972-1978 and did not contain some of the PS disks, I believe there have been different versions of Vol3 over time based on what Neil has told us. Here are the major possible variations. 1) 1976-Mid Eighties; 2)1976-1990; 3)Scaled back to 1976-1987.

What else have we been told? It is larger than either Vol1 or Vol2. It is 12 Disks + Summer Songs = 13 disks. There is also a Blu-Ray version which is 10 disks and contains all of the music on the CD set with a number of films.

Now let's get to my list of Disks in the subject of this blog post. All of them, with the exception of "Fresh Tracks" have been previously shared as having been worked on. So that means we know the names of 12 of those disks. Some of them have been given a disk number by Neil, shared in his online newspaper. I've assumed a cutoff at the end of 1989 primarily because most recently Neil has told us that Road Of Plenty is disk 11. But is that the latest news? Note what is missing in this configuration. There is a lot to say about the shortcomings of this guess, but the fact is we are pretty much in the dark. If Live Freedom gets bumped to Vol4, then we get an extra disk. What would that be? Bluenotes?

There is a lot of released content that I am guessing we just won't see in Vol3. Neil has told us that Vol3 is different in the sense that he is focusing on giving us unreleased takeoff things and not re-packaging the released contents as he did in Vol1 and Vol2. He is focusing on making new collections of albums. So some of these disks will be quite short but others will be full disks.

The tricky part is that Neil has actually told us a lot about Vol3 and some of it is contradictory. For instance, he told us at one point that Songs For Judy would not be included but 5-6 highlights would be in there. But based on the disk count, where exactly would they fit in. Neil has gone radio silent on all Vol3 topics as of late. We may not hear more until 2023.

  5. News that should interest Neil fans - as of 10/3/2022 Graham Nash is in a wheelchair.

I saw his show tonight, 10/4/2022 in Edmonds, WA. He came out in a wheelchair. He explained that he had a nasty fall a week or so ago and the ER doc said he would be OK. But yesterday, his manager urged him to get another opinion. They did an MRI on Graham and found he had 3 broken bones and pulled muscles in his leg. Thus the wheelchair.

Great show anyway. I wish him swift healing.

  6. @ wardo - the "repeats" in the NYA boxes has been a bone of contention. Neil seemed to have recognized this by some comments in LTE.

@ Dan - well, yes, speculation can be dangerous, but all fun when it comes to NYA.

@ LRR - thanks so much for clarifications here. Will update post above to appropriately credit.

The image of the 13 discs above came across via Tyler over @ FarOutMag who credited to Robert B @ NYU.

Anyways, always glad to set the record straight here.

also, good to confirm that the "repeats" deal will not repeat on NYA#3.

While we title this speculation, to be clear, this is all based on solid info from NY himself. So maybe there's a better word ...

    or Informed Speculations

@ Joel - thanks for sharing the news here on Graham. yes, wishing him the best. good to know
a great show despite GN condition.

and 2nd opinions are often more worthwhile than the 1st opinion. actually, 3 opinions is always recommended for anything major..

  8. My ‘informed speculation’ is that Volume 3 will be astonishingly brilliant, and filled to the brim with exceptional content that will leave us all absolutely stunned and smiling.

    Peace 🙏

  9. P. S. …….. and potentially financially strained for months……..

    Peace 🙏

  10. @ Dan : You are correct. I will work OT to be able to afford it.

NYA 3 ? As long as Barefoot Fooors is on it!

Love Earth is a theme I applaud. It’s a quirky song, with somebody playing a slide guitar, Neil on Mutant Upright Piano?

  11. Considering Archives Box 2 repeated Roxy, Tuscaloosa and Homegrown, is it safe to expect Chrome Dreams will be part of Vol 3? The standalone Chrome Dreams CD is listed at $49.95 on Australia (around $34US). Thats quite the jump on previous archives stand alones, so if its in the Box it will be a much better option I suspect.
