Comment of the Moment: "Return to Greendale" - Limited Edition Numbered Box Set by Neil Young and Crazy Horse

"Return to Greendale" - Limited Edition Box Set -
Neil Young and Crazy Horse

Details have been released for "Return to Greendale", a Limited Edition Box Set by Neil Young and Crazy Horse, and thus far -- not surprisingly -- some are less than satisfied.

Reactions have been all over the map with the usual quibbles, but also significant concerns. Our Comment of the Moment on "Return to Greendale" - Limited Edition Box Set by Neil Young and Crazy Horse by Randy M:

Hello Thrasher,

Hope you and family are well.

Wanted to just say I don't understand why every listing of the Blu Ray on all sites I've seen say "Full Concert". But when looking at track listings I've seen it only has the 10 Greendale songs.

I attended two Greendale shows in 2003 and along with setlist fm & sugar mtn all had 5-7 song sets after the Greendale presentation.

In my opinion I believe there is some false advertising being made if taken literally.

Do we know which show, if it's just one, the audio/video is being taken from?

Regards/Peace

Randy M

Thanks for your comment Randy.  1st, all's well here in TW Land, as much as it can be under circumstances. We're healthy, safe and happy to be locked down with the ones we love.

2nd, to answer your question of where was "Return to Greendale" concert, 2003-06-23, Air Canada Centre, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. (Thanks Sugar Mountain!)

And yes, you're correct, the "Return to Greendale" concert film is ONLY the Greendale set and does not include the 2nd Crazy Horse set.

As many of the recent comments on  "Return to Greendale" - Limited Edition Box Set have pointed out, there are many lost opportunities.  A booklet with James Mazzeo's wonderful psychedelic/surreal art? Pre-order system to lock in numbered edition? Stand alone Bluray option? Vicar St acoustic DVD? Bonus Crazy Horse 2nd set? A Greendale poster? Greendale High School T-Shirt? and on and on.

"Return to Greendale" - Limited Edition Box Set

Well, last time we got into questioning some of the NYA marketing strategy, it set the whole project back a year, so we certainly don't want that to happen this time either.

You can pre-order "Return to Greendale" - Limited Edition Box Set by Neil Young and Crazy Horse " now @ Order here . Release: 6 November 2020.

  1. There were two Greendale shows in Toronto in 2003. Return To Greendale was filmed at the second show in the late summer - Sept 4, 2003

  2. NYA is currently playing Falling From Above from the new Return To Greendale.

I'm also disappointed that most of the albums in the Performance Series are partial concerts. It's frustrating, for example, that Dreamin' Man is not complemented by other classical or rarer songs from the era.

These NYAPS are also sometimes compilations (Bluenote Café, Songs For Judy, Treasure...) and others are recordings from the same date... Difficult to find one's way but it is typically Neil Young.

That said, Return To Greendale is NYAPS n°16 and Dreamin' Man n°12. The 13, 14 and 15 are missing...

Knowing that he promises a Mirror Ball Live in 2021, there would thus remain two places available between 1993 and 2002...
    - Booker And The MG's 1993 ?
    - One of the concerts of 1996 with CH but there is already Year Of The Horse ?
    - Horde Tour 1997 ?
    - One of the concerts or a compilation of the 1999 solo tour ? There is already the Silver and Gold DVD but it is quite short...
    - Europe 2001 with CH ?
    - Europe 2002 with Booker T ?

Or some unique concerts like the Bridge 1994 or the warm-ups of 1997 ?

Everything is possible knowing that we already have a NYAPS 2.5 and that Way Down To The Rust Bucket would be 11.5 and Shakespeare 3.5...

On the other hand, the n° 6 is still missing. Odeon Budokan which is in Archives 2.0 (or it's a NYASRS since it was supposed to be an album in 1976) or the concert with the Ducks (but from 1977 so after Songs For Judy n° 7) ? And the 8: Boarding House 1978 (with the acoustic Shots) ?...

Moreover, in a LTE today, Neil announces that 6 (!) bootlegs would be available in 2021 on NYA with the best possible quality... Me, I don't see the difference between NYAPS and these bootlegs anymore... Or will the bootlegs only be listenable on NYA ?

We could also make predictions for the NYASRS. We have numbers 2, 5 and 10 (Paradox). Early Daze would be number one. Would Dume des Archives 2 be #3 and Odeon Budokan #4 (if not #6 on NYAPS ?) ? And the 6, Chrome Dreams ? The 7, Ocean Side Country Side ? The 8 Island In The Sun ? Toast, the 9th ?

A lot of promises... Many questions... Many hopes... Many frustrations... But it becomes a real exciting game!

    Phil

  3. Watching Falling From Above today nearly brought me to tears. Not the first time that has happened to me with his performances. Neil gives so much to the experience of his music with his ideas, his friends, the theatrics, the playing, the feel and the moment.

Love live Neil Young! The baddest man in town!

  4. I'm glad new records are out, but not everyone can afford them. First they imposed on us the cd, which I prefer, now the vinyl. More and more expensive box sets are published. I don't have the money to follow all the news and this makes me sad. Greendale again, this time in a luxury edition. I can't imagine how much Archives II, a limited edition on sale only on NYA, will cost. The policy of the record companies should be reviewed and corrected. It is useless to continuously scrape the bottom of the barrel. The original records, the ones that came out at the time, are better than all the box sets in this world. Many of them will never be reprinted again. Music and culture belong to everyone and not just the rich.
