  1. Little Wing is an interesting inclusion as the final song. "Winter is the best time of them all" is certainly worth a little thought, given that in the near future we might not have the change in seasons. Neil Young has always "marked time" and this is a difficult activity, with our mortality being at its base. Imagine, however, what the act of marking time becomes without its connection to changes in the seasons and the movements of the natural world? It seems to rip away part of our ground as living things. I still look for the migrating waterfowl as a way to mark time. I think the inclusion of this song is entirely consistent with "protest." We can do this by reminding people of all the things that matter and that are often so ruthlessly abused.

  2. Abner - yes, Little Wing serves as a fitting coda to The Times EP.

A brief song to conclude a brief release.

And the fade out section with Daryl murmuring is oh so fitting. It definitely mellows out a rather incendiary release, for sure. This is the only performance of an acoustic LW.

delightfully delicate and intimate. Hopefully it draws others back to the Hawks & Doves album.

    Little Wing, don't fly away
When the summer turns to fall
Don't you know some people say
The winter is the best time of them all
Winter is the best of all.

we can only hope & pray that neil is right about the coming winter...

may all of your seasons make the turn.
    peace

  3. Does anyone else hear birds chirping in the background from time to time in this release, or do I need to invest in new speakers?

  4. I love the song "Lost in Space." Hawks and Doves is a winner and an odd ball. My guess is that as time passes, this album will only grow in reputation. Like much of Neil's work.

  5. @DREman: As these songs were performed outside on the porch for the most part, the sound of birds is expected. Along with the farm animals as well.

@Abner: I agree about Hawks & Doves aging well. The first side is remarkably dreamlike, which I adore. Much of Neil’s 21st century works I believe will indeed grow in reputation as time goes by. For those of us who have been able to relate to these personal and passionate records Neil has created over the past twenty years, we don’t need to wait for time to pass. But time will eventually catch up with much of his later work, as it did for albums like Tonight’s the Night, and Trans.

    Peace 🙏

  6. I don't think his new stuff is ever going to be appreciated in the future because his voice is so bad now. He needs to give up his trademark falsetto and sing beautiful and low like he did on some of my favourite NY albums like Broken Arrow, Silver and Gold and Mirror Ball and and see if that sounds better.
