Nils Lofgren Confirms Crazy Horse Gig: Santa Monica Flyers Reunite*!

Nils Lofgren is confirming via Twitter that he will be performing with Crazy Horse on their upcoming gigs.

Yesterday, we reported that Neil Young & Crazy Horse will perform two concerts in Fresno, CA in May. So it's official: Santa Monica Flyers Reunite*! (*Obviously, no Ben Keith this time around.)

  1. It's looking like maybe we'll be hearing the Santa Monica Flyers reunite and play Tonight's The Night album?!

Are we dreamin' men & women or what???

  2. I dunno about that. Do the SM Flyers exist without Ben Keith?

  3. Ok, fair point on Ben.

So what might we have? Santa Monica Horse? Crazy Flyers? Neil, Nils, & CH?

  4. Crazy Neil and the Flying Horse sounds about right.

  5. Too late to go back and reunite the Flyers, but this is as close as we're going to get. Pretty freakin' cool!!!!
    Does Poncho play slide? :)

  6. Well, before the SM Flyers there was Nils, Danny, Ralph and Billy on After The Gold Rush. And Nils on the first CH album. His involvement with CH predates TTN by three years. Plus, that’s him with Trans band (with Ralph), on Sample and Hold (live, see Berlin).

I think we should expect just about anything CH related that Nils may or may not have been involved with...TTN tunes, ATGR tunes, I Don’t Want to Talk About It? Remember though, this is not a rehearsed gig, so who the hell knows, eh!😀

  7. Maybe what we have here is how Neil cryptically announced the shows: NYCH. Horse of a Different Color.

  8. This is fantastic news.

Listened to Paradox yesterday, pleasant enough without being particularly engaging, and POTR continue to find their niche.

Roxy? My gut instinct is it is one of the greatest Neil Young records I have ever heard.

    Scotsman.

  9. This actually is stunning news. Nils is a fantastic player. Wonder what we will get next week. The unrehearsed part is the juiciest part of this announcement.

  10. they will do some sort of rehearsing before Fresno. the cheapest Fresno ticket is 85 bucks. but a warm up gig by definition is a rehearsal show. I almost pulled the trigger on a ticket today. but 500 miles a day over 2 days drive, plus equal that coming back. 60 bucks Motel 6. walking distance to venue. Im very tempted. 299.00 RT flight to San Jose. 2 hr drive to Fresno. still mulling it over

  11. This is... cool (understatement). For me, Nils's piano has always been integral to Southern Man and When You Dance. Especially the former track: the angry, breathless urgency really undergirds the whole rhythm and attitude of the piece, not unlike a keyboard version of Neil's one-note solos. Or maybe a big stone anchor hitting the beach.

I suppose it's evident that I associate Nils Lofgren heavily with the ATGR material, but just about anything from the early Horse days is good value. Haven't gotten to Roxy yet, I regret to say, but I look forward to it. For the last month or so, I've had pieces of Paradox floating around my brain. It's as fragmented as any other NY soundtrack you can name, and--apart from the POTR Cowgirl Jam--I'm not sure how well it would stand apart from the movie. Being a soundtrack, it's probably not mean to be a completely standalone piece.

And... still holding out hope for a number of other archival Horse releases that need not be named for the 3,005th time. *Cough*Toast*cough.

  12. The 1st CH record is a classic but I Don't Wanna Talk About It

  13. it's a mental illness we all share - wanting to make this show at any cost. we are in montana on our way to portugal end of next week from LA and bogged down with work yet i am determined not to miss what is happening in fresno. pulled the trigger on the cheapest seats, $69 (at my husband's request in case we don't make it) and now regretful i didn't buy the great 3rd row seats instead that were available! i am going to get there...somehow. life is short. this fresno gig is astonishing news and can't stand the thought of not witnessing it!

  14. Nils did I Dont Want to Talk About it at the last Bridge School 2016. Pegi on backing vocals. I loved his set. and what about Jack Nitzsche? lets not forget that old character.

  15. Jack N was a classic character. RIP. Btw, that’s him on piano on When You Dance....

  18. @Syscrusher: Nils plays slide (and latest rumblings are no Poncho).

  19. I think the title of this post is kind of wrong. It's NOT that this is a Santa Monica Flyers "reunion" without Ben. It's that WITHOUT Ben, there ISN'T a "Santa Monica Flyers"...

  20. Neil's new post on NYA pretty much proves my previous point... this is a original Crazy Horse reunion

  21. Yeah no Poncho :( I hope he is okay. The show will be great but have grown up with Crazy Horse as Poncho, Neil, Billy and Ralph. Love Nils though...couldn't think of a better replacement. Show in Bakersfield too? Or is that just facebook rumour?

  22. Driving in from Oregon to this event.
I can't stand his recent out put and absolutely DO NOT DIG POTR.
But this is different. I hope one of them doesn't pull a Col. Bruce Hampton onstage.
    And the Roxy disc.....wow.
