Thus far, Neil Young & Crazy Horse's 2013 Australia concerts have been well received ... generally blogging.

For just a few positive samples from press reviews, tweets, Facebook posts, and blog comments, see here. Or this:
"That left the slightly bruised audience in no doubt that they had witnessed one of rock's most sturdy , most forceful , most earthly performance in some time."

~REVIEW: Neil Young with Crazy Horse - The West Australian by RAY PURVIS
Or this:
"And so ended one of the best rock n roll shows most of us have ever had the privilege of seeing."

But what's up with those doubters like this? From Neil Young should have stuck to oldies rather than new 'noise' | Sunshine Coast Daily by Heidi Costello:
But the enjoyment level dropped considerably for us after about the third song when they launched into what must have been at least 15 minutes worth of self-gratifying noise-making. Neil and Poncho were obviously enjoying themselves as they jammed away and played with the screaming feedback.

Don't get me wrong, sure, there's a time and a place for this in a rock concert. But the length of time that it went on soon made it boring and I felt nauseous. By the time this finished it was about 45 minutes into the show and we had only heard three songs - none of which had set the crowd on fire.
...
He could have fit plenty more of them in if they'd just cut down what dad described as 'a penultimate tsunami of noise'.
(Some where Neil is smiling on being described as 'a penultimate tsunami of noise'.)

From Neil Young & Crazy Horse's Australia Concert Tour Leg Kicks Off Tonight in Perth:
A true legend indeed but i too left early.

A self indulgent racket of loud grungy guitar and these veterans getting off on it instead of playing the true classics i came to hear. Neil needs to realise what and who made him famous, classic songs and people paying money to hear them. What a crap set list of long winded same same songs. Where were the classics? He played one and that was an acoustic cop out. I was one of many people who walked out extremely disappointed. Neil was trying to be young instead of Young.

What a wank and what a waste of money.
Where to begin?

  • "self indulgent racket of loud grungy guitar" - exactly, it's a Crazy Horse concert
  • "Where were the classics? " & "crap set list" - what?? Setlist included classics Heart of Gold, Powderfinger, Cinnamon Girl, Mr. Soul, Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black)

What is striking about Neil Young's Doubters is that they exhibit the very symptoms of arrested development they now attribute to a man whose resilience and humour under critical pressure are very evident to those who admire him most.

We've been through all of this "Neil Doubters" business many, many times before (see This Is Not For You: Following The Muse) so we won't belabor the point of what some see as inspired genius others hear as a "piece of crap". What some see as "self indulgent" others hear as the essence of the Crazy Horse jam-huddle circle.

Even Rolling Stone weighed in with a sub-headline "Show leaves Australian fans divided" based on negative comments. Yet look at the video of 'Hey Hey, My My' and ask whether there is any evidence of rust?

But if you really want to know what the concerts are like, judge the angry, bitter comments on The Courier-Mail or Perth Now and then contrast with this comprehensive blog of the Perth concert on Life Is A Mixtape. Then ask your self which opinion is based on solid, factual observations vs. unfulfilled emotional expectations?

So here you go, this is for all the doubters.

And this is for all the believers.

  1. I work with a sort of Doubter. When we first met and the inevitable discussion of music came up, he revealed himself as a "big Neil Young fan" but subsequent conversations revealed the only two albums he really liked were "Harvest" and "Comes a Time". Anything to do with Crazy Horse or Neil's "electric" stuff, he avoided like the plague.

Which is fine and cool. He's a smart fella, new that this tour was a Neil Young and Crazy Horse tour and didn't go to the concert.

And therefore didn't complain about it.

These people that were expecting Neil to play a full acoustic set of his "hits" on this tour are idiots and and I don't feel one ounce of sympathy for the fact they feel "ripped off" and "disappointed".

  2. Just ignore the comments from people who don't get it, Thrasher. They are welcome to their opinion. By acknowledging them, you make them seem more significant than they actually are.

    The Flying Scotsman.

  3. To the doubters: what were Neil and
the boys doing during the '86 tour
and the '91 (weld) tour or in '96
or 2001.The same thing they're doing now of course. Perhaps these
whiners should do a little research

  4. I was surprised my blog review (Life Is A Mixtape) found its way to Thrasher! Thanks guys for posting it up!

I traveled from Singapore for the Perth show, not sure if anyone else did the same. Good thing Neil and the Horse didn't play my country. There would've have been lots of disappointed people expecting Harvest and Harvest Moon.

  6. Why can't people just like what they like without having to be labeled?

  7. Sometimes its distorted
    not clear to you
    Sometimes the beauty of love
    just comes ringing through
    New glass in the window
    new leaf on the tree
    New distance between us
    you and me......
    you and me

This new song is taking me over, hitting me like Oh!Susannha! did a little while back. Love new Neil Young songs.

  8. I'm not a doubter, but I won't go to the concert in Holland.Maybe it's my age (61) but I don't doubt for a minute that Neil is the greatest there is in this free-rockin'world!
    Believe me,Cees Mostert

  9. You know what's funny (but not ha-ha funny)? If these were greatest hits concerts it would become known as the "Gotta Pad the Bank Account Tour." Can you even imagine a "reunion" tour with Crazy Horse?

    How pathetic would that be?

My guess is that most of Neil's fans admire the man for taking chances onstage, pulling out those rarely played gems, the witty banter and the occasional "shut up, asshole." And even if he does play HOG for the millionth time, that's okay. The Fairfax show I attended had one of the most passionate Powderfingers I've ever heard.

When Neil Young plays, I listen.

  10. "The Believer" by Neil Young

    I'm just a believer baby
    In those dreams of mine
You see they just keep on comin'
    In a long, long line

    Oh yeah, I'm the believer
    Oh yeah, I'm the believer

    And like that songbird singin'
    Whether it's red or blue
Just like those church bells ringin'
I'm keepin' my faith in you

    Oh yeah, I'm the believer
Oh yeah, I believe in you

And though the seas may rise
    Until they do
I keep doin' the things I'm doin'
    And believe in you
    I'm makin' the change
I'm keepin' my faith in you

    Oh yeah, I'm the believer
    Oh yeah, oh yeah

    Sure is a windy road
    That I walk with you
Look how the trees are bendin'
    Their leaves are fallin' too

    Oh yeah, oh yeah
    I'm the believer, babe
    Oh yeah

    I remember my mama saying
    I want to be
    On this windy road
    For eternity
    I'm makin' the change
I'm keepin' my faith in you

Oh yeah, I'm the believer, babe
    I believe in you
Oh yeah, I'm the believer, babe
    I'm the believer
    I'm the believer
    Oh yeah
    Oh yeah

    I am a believer !!!!!!!

  11. Neil can do no wrong.

Remember that quote from, "Enter The Dragon"?

"Don't think. FEEL. It's like a finger pointing at the moon.
Do not concentrate on the finger or you will miss all of the heavenly glory!"

  12. To all you ordinary people speakin’out this notes for you. There’s a world, wide, web, a human highway, with fields and fields of opportunity for you to sample and hold the music arcade before you let your fingers do the walking and cough up the bucks and loose change for the turnstiles

Can’t believe your lying, truth be known. Oh the hard luck stories, the old man and old laughing lady wanted a journey through the past to the days that used to be. Angry world, why take shots at this dreaming man just singing a song, so far from home. People on the street tell me why you restless consumers are so helpless when you know we R in control. Computer cowboys it’s the computer age.

Campaigner you’re on the losing end, lost in space, I don’t cry no tears for you, you’re too far gone. Cry cry cry. You can ride my lama.

  17. “I like the idea...of selecting your own customers. No reservations. Instead, invitations. No menus. Instead, surprise people each night with your talent and skill. I didn’t know if it would work in Los Angeles, but I didn’t care. I could not resist trying. Many people say, ‘Are you crazy?’ Maybe I am crazy, but it’s the only way.”
