Crazy Horse & Neil Young are scheduled to play at the 2012 MusiCares Person of the Year for honoree Paul McCartney in Los Angeles on Feb. 10.
This will be the 1st Crazy Horse & Neil Young gig since the 2003/4 Greendale tour.
Next question... what Paul McCartney song will Neil Young & Crazy Horse cover? "A Day in the Life"?

My wife and I met Neil and Poncho a year ago last july, Im not going to say where but they were very cool we talked a bit about venues ive seen them at(to be honest i was almost speechless) and they did us the plesure of doin a few pictures and as they walked away he looked back and said we will see you at (bla bla)my favorite venue.... I said you guys are gonna tour again / and he gave me a thumbs up....I was starting to loose hope when he did the Buffallo springfield gigs, But wow maybe this is really gonna happen

ReplyDeleteWe Can Work It Out because it's a true Lennon/McCartney song (equal parts) and it completely relates to what's happening on so many levels. And it was the other side to the Day Tripper 45 (which side was A? does it matter?) which IMHO was the greatest single in the history of R&R (and also the first one I ever bought with my own $$).
ReplyDeleteThey'll do a version that moves between slow loping country and big loud rock, then will do some other music quotes (maybe Give Peace A Chance), then move into I Saw Her Standing There for a verse or two, finally coming back to the final chorus with Neil telling himself, the band and the world that "We Can Work It Out".

What I wouldn't be too thrilled about is Helter Skelter (too obvious. Something like "Mother Nature's Son" compressed, distorted, and shooting like a welder all over the place would be mind blowing.
I HATE PAUL MCCARTNEY. Terrible songwriting, the only songs I can dig by him are on The Beatles and Abbey Road. I CANNOT stand songs like Let It Be, Long and Winding Road or Your Mother Should Know.
ReplyDeleteI've always felt as though Neil was way more like John regarding songwriting. I was listening to Sometimes in NYC too recently and I thought it really rocked, Neil-style.

I'd like to see Leo Kottke doing "Blackbird" but he wasn't invited. So Alicia will probably do it on the piano. It's okay but nothing to write home about.

Sgt. Pepper was my least favorite, quite honestly. Paul's song always reminded me of "show tunes." Maybe that's what Alex means.

ReplyDeleteChoosing it for a book title about a cold-blooded murdering-psychotic hippie cult group was not a good idea although Paul has done a good job trying to get his song back over the years.
I think the book title refers to what Manson called his philosophy of the racial war he hoped to start...of course Manson got the name from the song...
ReplyDeleteI agree that Helter Skelter is a great song. I still have the original White Album that I bought way back in February 1969; I've listened to that copy, another one and at least three CD's worth since then.
ReplyDeleteAnd the joke and comment weren't really "worst ever". I'm just extremely tired of the whole Manson thing and wish it would go away. So anyway not any big deal.
Still recovering from the game. Grew up a Giants fan in NY and became a Pats fan after relocating to New England. Right now kinda caught in the middle. But have to say I wasn't too impressed with the commercials or half time show. Time to put away some of the CGI toys for awhile and get back to creativity. But congratulations to the Giants and all of their fans out there!
...and I just realized that the MusiCares show is on February 10, which is the one year anniversary of the Carnegie Hall tribute show for Neil. What great memories!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know what motivated Paul to compose this until I read up on Wiki, but when Paul sets out to create a song he wants to define in the way he defined Helter Skelter, he gave it 200%.
ReplyDeleteI think we need to reclaim Helter Skelter for the song that it was meant to be. The song we played when we hit that chord of frustration in our life. The song we need to hear to shake things up a bit -- like when we put soil and water into a jar and shake it -- to watch how slowly the particles float to regroup at the bottom.
