  1. The plethora of Archives releases from the ‘71 tour has given a lot of insight into how the setlist is shaped over the course of the tour. Some of the early dates have songs that end up dropped, but then others are added. The changes are mostly small, but they are deliberate in maximizing the experience!

    SPOILERS BELOW

By the time Neil made it to Berkeley, he’d already dropped Days That Used To Be from the setlist. We didn’t get any one-offs like previous shows’ Like A Hurricane, Rockin’ In The Free World, or Vampire Blues. But what we did get was the full complement of 19 songs, interspersed with the casually rehearsed commentary that is Neil’s solo live trademark. The master stroke between LA’s Greek and Berkeley’s (the William Randolph Hearst Greek Theater, ha) was moving Comes A Time from the main set closer to a second encore.

Heart Of Gold is such a great song, and it felt good to applaud it so excessively as Neil left the stage. Having built up his classic themes of love and earth all night with tracks like Don’t Forget Love and Natural Anthem, as well as in charming banter (“What’s yer favorite planet??”), he made the encore singalong version of Love Earth a major event. Four Strong Winds provided a wistful closer, and folks were packing it in. But we kept on clapping. Neil came back for Comes A Time, and that last return was so gratifying. Everyone was up and in the aisles at this point, and absolutely giddy.

  2. via Hounds That Howell:

So Rusties came in from Japan Italy Australia and London in addition to the usual cast of characters.

The audience was amazingly warm and enthusiastic more so than any of the 39 shows I’ve seen.

I attribute that to this being a home game for Neil with friends and neighbors in attendance.
A lot of the audience stood up for OHIO the only song they stood for.

Lots of singing along and LOVE EARTH was a big hit!

Throughout the show Neil regularly asked audience "so what's your favorite planet?"

In the beginning people just said East Uranus, of course, Saturn yada yada. I of course kept yelling MOTHER EARTH.

Some people eventually caught on to what I was laying down. And everyone sang the LIVE EARTH refrain beautifully. A great audience bonding moment. Never forget Mysic is the highest form of spirituality and we all felt it last night at the Berkley Greek with Neil as the clergy.
