Young Shakespeare: Another Neil Young Archival Release Coming + 50th Anniversary Re-release of "After The Goldrush"

Young Shakespeare
Times Contrarian | NYA

Here we go again on yet another Neil Young Archival release that's coming ... someday.

Writing in Times Contrarian | NYA, Neil Young discusses the unreleased album and film titled "Young Shakespeare" from January 1971 at the Shakespeare Theater in Stratford, Connecticut as "the earliest known film of any of my performances."

While release plans remain uncertain, Neil tantalizingly teases that maybe he'll pair "Young Shakespeare" with the 50th Anniversary release of "After The Goldrush" later this year as a double record.

"Young Shakespeare" tracklist:

Tell me why
Old man
The Needle And The Damage Done
Ohio
Cowgirl in the sand
A Man Needs A Maid
Heart of gold
Dance Dance Dance
Helpless
Don't Let It Bring You Down
Down By The River

As noted here previously, Neil Young confirmed the release of "Homegrown" for April, 2020 (more details at Test Pressing of "Homegrown" by Neil Young ). In July, 2020, "Greendale Live" will be released as an album and a movie (more details at Premiere: RETURN TO GREENDALE by Neil Young & Crazy Horse @ Balboa Theater, San Francisco, CA - Jan 28, 2020).

  1. I'll buy it, certainly, but I don't expect to be wowed. For one, the video footage was already mined for the Massey Hall DVD, so it's not exactly rare anymore. Also, the show was within a couple weeks of Massey Hall, and not too long after Cellar Door, so the material is very similar. Of course, if there's a real rarity or massive departure in there, cool.

Mostly it will be a nice tribute to the Shakespeare Theater here in Stratford, CT USA, which stood about two miles from where I type this until it burned down a couple years ago. Big loss to the community, and to art.

  5. Young Shakespeare looks to be another wonderful release from Neil’s early days and the film should be a treat as we have only seen bits and pieces of it in the past. As far as a repeated set list, I have always found with Neil that each performance brings with it its own unique and creative delivery. Neil tends to feed off the energy of the audience and this tends to allow each song its own quality. Unique to that particular moment. I for one look forward to seeing and hearing this special night in Neil’s journey through the past.

    Peace.

  6. The first song I learned to play and sing was The Needle and The Damage Done. Love his style of play and lyrics especially the song Old Man that seems to speak of my dad and I being so much alike. Thank you Neil Young.

  7. The Shakespeare footage has long been available as the Bootleg 'Swing In mit Neil Young', filmed by Wim Wenders. The performance is not all that different but has some nice nuances, like the Maid/HOG combo. As for the 50th anniversary edition of ATGR, if it comes with bonus material that is unavailable otherwise then it's a rip-off. Already bought that album on LP and twice on CD. And Homegrown: hope it also gets a CD release.

  8. Every Day something different. Things change on a dime one minute Archives Vol 2 definitely coming out in 2020 now no mention of it. First no tour 2020
Then CH TOUR now maybe no tour. I’m gonna turn off the Neil channel for awhile to avoid my daily highs and lows.

  11. Grandpa Granola is fine indeed. I wish Pete Townshend spent his time curating his output like Neil has. Never enough of either of them for me.
