PREVIEW TRACK: "Don't Be Denied" by Neil Young + Stray Gators - Upcoming Album 'Tuscaloosa" (Official Audio)

Neil Young + Stray Gators "Don't Be Denied" from the upcoming album 'Tuscaloosa". Release date: June 7th.

As noted previously, the next release will be "TUSCALOOSA: Live Album - Neil Young & The Stray Gators". On March 30, Neil responds to a question that "Tuscaloosa is an album that will be as close to TFA [Time Fades Away] as I will get." Answering another letter, Neil writes that: "The real 'Homegrown' album is coming out after Tuscaloosa."

From Neil Young interview in Rolling Stone:

It’s [a concert] from the period right around Harvest and Tonight’s the Night.

For me, it’s edgy.

It’s like those mellow songs with an edge. It’s really trippy to be down in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and singing those songs from Harvest and the songs that we were doing for Time Fades Away before it came out.

I found this thing and it had such a great attitude to it. I just loved the whole night, so I put that together with [engineer] John Hanlon. That will be our next album. Then we’ll do the other one and the other ones after that. There’s just so many that I keep changing my mind all the time.

It’s good.

It’s good to be able to change your mind.

TUSCALOOSA: Live Album - Neil Young & The Stray Gators
TUSCALOOSA - John Hanlon 3-12-19 | NYA

Last year, John Hanlon posted on NYA a teaser on the revelation of the Tuscaloosa tapes -- an "under the radar monster".

Now, Hanlon confirms that the next release will be TUSCALOOSA: Live Album - Neil Young & The Stray Gators on TUSCALOOSA - John Hanlon 3-12-19 | NYA:
Dear readers,

Regarding the upcoming TUSCALOOSA live album from the February 5, 1973 concert in Alabama; mastering for vinyl and hi-res is now underway at Bernie Grundman Mastering in Hollywood.

I mixed the album in Studio 2 at East West in Hollywood over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays from analog 16 track 2” masters to ¼” 30ips tape, sending my mixes daily to Neil in Colorado to listen to. Then Neil would send his comments to me live as he listened. Suggested changes made, I then assembled the final mixes for three master album reels for three sides of vinyl, based on sequencing done previously with Neil in the digital realm. During the sequencing, two songs, “ON THE WAY HOME” AND “THE LONER” were dropped. ‘On the way Home’ has already appeared on many live records. ‘The Loner’ was out of tune.

It was analog to analog all the way around for TUSCALOOSA, the next upcoming live record by Neil and the Stray Gators, (unless something else happens to change that). The 192/24 master for NYA will be generated from the analog mastering, directly from the master tapes through Grundman Mastering’s great console.

Happy listening, John Hanlon

Speaking of Alabama, the last time Neil Young was in Tuscaloosa, it wasn't maybe the best of nights judging from some of the reviews of the concert. See Tuscaloosa, AL Reviews – Neil Young & Crazy Horse Concert, Oct. 25, 2012, but use disCERNment -- as always.

  1. Hi,

What a great time to be a Neil fan - Solo - Horse - POTR - can it get any better this year? Only a CSN&Y anti-Trump concert could ice this cake.

  2. Tuscaloosa's on the Timeline!

As of today we only get Don't Be Denied.

But they'll probably keep previewing tracks.

Yes, great time to be a Neil fan.

  4. Don't be denied sounds really good. Can't wait for the full record.
BUT "Tuscaloosa is an album that will be as close to TFA" is not really true. Only 2 tracks... No Last Dance :-(

  5. yeah The FarmAidians! always a great time to be a Neil fan! Maybe not a CSN&Y tour though.

    "Make friends down in Alabama.
I'm from a new land I come to you and see all this ruin
    What are you doing Alabama?
You got the rest of the union to help you along
    What's going wrong?"

  6. Can't wait for this. I'm a big fan of TFA. Only pitty is no 'Last Dance' I absolutely love that song.

I was hoping for a long version of 'Last Dance' including the "Come on turn off the light, this the last dance" chorus and the long instrumental part that is not on TFA version.

  7. First off I love the cover. I’ve always ranked this song in my top 10, and this version is not as ragged as TFA but way more focused. I’m happy with the track list and really looking forward to hearing this on vinyl. Keep em comin Neil, time is fading away.

    Peace

  8. Great version of Don't Be Denied. Great vocal!
Looking forward to another great listen when this come out. Here We Are In The Years with strained vocals should be nice.

  9. I'll still get it, but I am also disappointed at the lack of Last Dance. And I'm kind of desensitized to all the most mainstream, Harvest-era stuff by now but at least the other half of the track list is looking exciting.

  11. John Hanlon called the recent discovery of the Tuscaloosa tapes an "under the radar monster".

Thanks for bringing above radar John! So much of a revelation.

Neil's insistence on DBD is literally spine tingling. We listened to DBD on both YT & NYA. The difference is undeniable. XStream rocks, YT blows.

  12. @ So Tired - right, thanks. Loner was out of tune and “On The Way Home” already on too many albums.

On NYA: “We don’t like to release a lot of songs on many albums, so ‘On The Way Home’ went by the wayside. ‘The Loner’ was just not good enough. I still make those decisions because I am here on the planet. However, those two versions will be available in the archives for members to hear. I have no plans to release everything I have ever recorded. Some of it is just not good enough.”

Thanks Neil for still being here on the planet. That's what matters. Not a few missing tracks.

  13. Sounds good! Caught TFA in Detroit and the acoustic part was intense. "Love In Mind" was still unreleased at the time but had been written across the street, or started there, from Cobo Hall.

Anyone having trouble logging into NYA? Have used my gmail account to get into the site and now it says I should unsubscribe that but that doesn't work nor does changing the account.

Sent a question in a few days ago but haven't heard back.

Anyone got a solution or was it something I said?

  16. Strange that seven people have already reviewed this album that hasn’t even been released yet on Amazon. Some are reviewing the CD which isn’t even available to preorder and they describe it as a bootleg with terrible sound quality. What’s up with that? I was under the impression that Amazon won’t let you review something until it is released. Obviously they are reviewing something else.

  17. @ Jim - glad to hear. yes, logging out and then back in seems to fix account status.

@ Dan - hmmm. fake reviews? On AMZ? shocked. simply shocked.

so much chaff. so precious little wheat.

  19. Jim, Love in Mind was written in Chicago. In Dotroit 1971-01-17 he said "I wrote this yesterday".
