TUSCALOOSA: Live Album - Neil Young & The Stray Gators - February 5, 1973

TUSCALOOSA: Live Album - Neil Young & The Stray Gators
TUSCALOOSA - John Hanlon 3-12-19 | NYA

Last year, John Hanlon posted on NYA a teaser on the revelation of the Tuscaloosa tapes -- an "under the radar monster".

Now, Hanlon confirms that the next release will be TUSCALOOSA: Live Album - Neil Young & The Stray Gators on TUSCALOOSA - John Hanlon 3-12-19 | NYA:
Dear readers,

Regarding the upcoming TUSCALOOSA live album from the February 5, 1973 concert in Alabama; mastering for vinyl and hi-res is now underway at Bernie Grundman Mastering in Hollywood.

I mixed the album in Studio 2 at East West in Hollywood over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays from analog 16 track 2” masters to ¼” 30ips tape, sending my mixes daily to Neil in Colorado to listen to. Then Neil would send his comments to me live as he listened. Suggested changes made, I then assembled the final mixes for three master album reels for three sides of vinyl, based on sequencing done previously with Neil in the digital realm. During the sequencing, two songs, “ON THE WAY HOME” AND “THE LONER” were dropped. ‘On the way Home’ has already appeared on many live records. ‘The Loner’ was out of tune.

It was analog to analog all the way around for TUSCALOOSA, the next upcoming live record by Neil and the Stray Gators, (unless something else happens to change that). The 192/24 master for NYA will be generated from the analog mastering, directly from the master tapes through Grundman Mastering’s great console.

Happy listening, John Hanlon

Speaking of Alabama, the last time Neil Young was in Tuscaloosa, it wasn't maybe the best of nights judging from some of the reviews of the concert. See Tuscaloosa, AL Reviews – Neil Young & Crazy Horse Concert, Oct. 25, 2012, but use disCERNment -- as always.

In the meantime, bring on the "under the radar monster" from sweet home Alabama! (you guys know we just had to do this and we can not tell you how excited we are to have the opportunity to -- once again -- put to bed the never ending fake feud of the century.)

  1. OH, I'd love to have the full show out including the out of tune Loner!
Why polishing it , also the digital hd edition?

  2. This is a monumental occasion for me because a couple nights later as a fresh faced 17 year old I saw NY for the first time in Baton Rouge Louisiana. Hey if I can't get the BR performance(on the LSU campus) I'll gladly settle for Tuscaloosa( rival Alabama Crimson Tide wins again). He has only performed in BR once and I believe also in Tuscaloosa once to. Both supposedly anti-NY places (because of the myth that Lynyrd Skynyrd loathed Neil-Sweet Home Alabama doesn't come out for another year anyway) and us Southern boys didn't like the songs Southern Man and Alabama( those songs were right on the mark and to some extent still are). I know for a fact the Baton Rouge concert was packed and Neil was well received. What a concert for me and my friends.Still my favorite live concert of all the incredible concerts I've ever seen.My only hope it's the full concert.

  3. Here's my best guess for Tuscaloosa spread out over three sides of vinyl

Here We Are In The Years
    LA
    After The Goldrush
    Out on the Weekend
    Harvest
    Old Man

    Heart of Gold
    Time Fades Away
    Lookout Joe
    New Mama
    Alabama

    Don't Be Denied
    Cinnamon Girl
    Last Dance
Are You Ready for the Country

Some educated guessing. I could be wrong about LA and Last Dance. But we've already been told that it will be
incomplete. No On The Way Home and no The Loner.

  4. @ Roberto - yes, sure, on the whole shakey deal. as for digital hd edition? not sure.

@ timothy - good to know on Baton Rouge concert being well received. it seems Tuscaloosa wasn't.

"Alabama, you got the weight on your shoulders
    That's breaking your back."

@ Ken - great guess on Tuscaloosa! we should be finding out soon.

If no On The Way Home and no The Loner it's still all good.

    "Make friends down in Alabama.
I'm from a new land I come to you and see all this ruin
    What are you doing Alabama?
You got the rest of the union to help you along
    What's going wrong?"

  6. Nice one, Ken. I would nix "LA" and guess "Southern Man" in place of "Last Dance". But who really knows? I think you are very close...

  7. Hoping once again for the "rock" version of "New Mama"...
