Neil Young Inducting The Pretenders
2005 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Ceremony
Some distressing news today...
“Due to illness, Neil Young is regrettably no longer able to induct Pearl Jam at this Year’s Induction Ceremony”
From Pitchfork.com:
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has announced that Neil Young will no longer induct Pearl Jam into the Hall at the April 7 ceremony, as he was previously scheduled to do. In a statement, the Rock Hall wrote that Young will be absent “due to illness,” as Rolling Stone points out. In his place, David Letterman will induct Pearl Jam. The Rock Hall’s statement concludes, “We’re wishing Neil a speedy recovery.” Read it in full below. Pitchfork has reached out to Neil Young’s representatives for more information.Get well soon Neil!
This isn't Neil's first Rock and Roll Hall of Fame health scare ... unfortunately. The good news is that Neil came back almost better than ever.
Very distressing news indeed. Hopefully it's just a late arriving minor illness like the flu or pneumonia that will go away as quickly as it came. If Neil had/has a serious illness, I don't think he'd have agreed to be there for the induction ceremony, but of course things can and do change quickly...
ReplyDeleteFor now, I just hope it's a late season flu or pneumonia (like I'm going through), but if so, I think the press release would have mentioned it. The "tone" is somewhat ominous, but for now I'll stop fearing and speculating, and will just think and send good vibes to Neil.
"Take my advice
don't listen to me"
Get well soon Neil (and you too, TopangaDaze). Let's hope it's nothing too serious.
ReplyDeleteScotsman.
Wishing Neil a speedy recovery!
ReplyDeleteI hope you get well very quickly Neil!!
ReplyDeletetake care of yourself mr young
ReplyDeleteHopeful youre alright old grey
ReplyDeleteStrange because I saw a picture of him this morning on Gothamist site. He was driving in LA. They said it was from last weekend. The pic and story have since been removed
ReplyDeleteHoping and praying Neil for a full recovery, from whatever illness he has. He also cancelled his tour this year. Hope it is not too serious.
ReplyDeleteIt's still up on LAist.com. DH posted about getting terrifying, insane news last week on istagram but that have just been about politics. Maybe he's still hibernating for winter. You now how Neil is . If he doesn't feel it, it's not happening.
ReplyDeleteI meant The picture from last weekend is still up Some Guy
DeleteSo what is interesting is when people complain about Neils ticket prices. But how much would you pay if you knew it was close to his last?? Think of a number and double it....
DeleteIs there any chance that his sabbatical and this illness are at all related? Is it certain he has been healthy since he announced his sabbatical?
ReplyDeleteTopangaDaze, influenza can be a dangerous illness and pneumonia is DEFINITELY a dangerous one. A lot depends on the virulence of the pathogen(germ, bug) involved. I'd recommend seeing a physician and getting an annual flu vaccine and, depending on your age and health condition the pneumonia vaccine. Advice from an old retired open heart recovery, surgical intensive care, and cardiac intensive care registered nurse. Didn't make Woodstock, but old enough to see Neil with CSN&Y first run in the theaters and have the original album, hence the "retired" part. Disclaimer:Not intended as medical advice.

ReplyDeleteI don't know about anyone else but any news like this, about Neil scares the shit out of me. Like I commented to my wife about this news....." What am I going to do when Neil is gone? "
ReplyDeleteHoping that whatever is going on with him is short lived and he is soon up and blowing our socks off again. Get well buddy, the world needs your influence and love now more than ever!
Healing energy for Neil...if he needs a break, no wonder.
ReplyDeleteAgree with all these sentiments but nobody has mentioned the possibility that things at home ain't working out ? Just a view.
ReplyDeleteThat crossed my mind, and highly possible too, that the infatuation is wearing thin after 4 years. I got to believe he misses the ranch, his cars and his kids and Pegi too. To think otherwise forces you to come to grips with his actions and realize that "sometimes heroes fail." GL A Letter Home
DeleteGet well sooonnnnnn Neil i hope not is too serious all my prayers are with you...God protect you !!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
ReplyDeleteGott Schutze Dich Neil

Get well, Neil. Do whatever it takes, and take as long as you need....... Just get well.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts and prayers are with you.
ON THE BRIGHT SIDE, while's recovering perhaps the Muse will visit him and we'll get another Mr. Soul like Gem or three!!
ReplyDeleteRe: speculation above. I'm not sure how any hypothetical relationship difficulties would stop him turning up for half-an-hour to this event. I know it's sensible to not always take things at face value, but the simplest explanation here (he's actually ill and can't attend) is in this case the most likely one.
ReplyDeleteAs for the extent of the illness and whether it has any connection to his break or not, we'll just have to wait and see. All we can do is send our best wishes and hope for good news ASAP.
Scotsman.
@ Scotsman - wise words in a measured dose. appreciated.
ReplyDeleteWe think that long time readers of this blog know the long and deep relationship of the band PJ and eddie & neil in particular. Anyone who is familiar with that history would know that there is NO way that Neil is missing this huge honor because of anything short of a health situation.
To think that Neil is blowing this off because of some sort of personal matter is just ludicrous. Now that said, Neil did leave Buffalo Springfield alone at the microphone at the 1997 ceremony...
http://neilyoungnews.thrasherswheat.org/2015/03/neil-young-rock-and-roll-hall-of-famer.html
So we send best wishes to Neil for a speedy recovery and all the best to Eddie, PJ and David tomorrow night. Congratulations.
Remember "go eat a peach"? And he considers Stills a brother to this day.
DeleteSorry Scotsman gotta disagree - look what happened to The Pretender
ReplyDeleteGet well soon, Neil. I was reading Springsteen's book last night. There is a passage where he describes that shortly after 9/11 he was walking the streets. Someone drove by and yelled. 'We need you, Bruce.' That said, 'we need you Neil.'
ReplyDeleteGet well my friend but also rest up!
ReplyDeleteWe await your return brother. In the meantime, put your feet up.
ReplyDeleteHope Neil gets well and will be back on the course again. He's been my guiding light almost four decades, have seen all his gigs in Finland, got all his records as well. That personal voice and honest lyrics have been my friends thru the thick and thin. "Aint taking my last hit yet/I know things are different now/I see same old signs/But somethin' new is growin'".
ReplyDelete'Guiding light' where did that take you? I think we're all getting carried away here.
ReplyDeleteOf course we will be carried away after all this fuss and fighting, but nothing can stop us keep on wondering some wonderful works of art this human race have created. That was my point, not taking part to any nihilistic points of view, dude. I'm on a peace trail, too.
Delete@ Raimo - we understood completely as did most of the readers here, aside from the usual one exception. Most all of us are on that peace trail. Those who want to travel the Hate Trail are more than welcome to carry on their journey elsewhere....
ReplyDeletewalk on
Fortunately, Neil's illness is "nothing major."
ReplyDeletehttp://pitchfork.com/news/72679-neil-young-illness-nothing-major-representative-says/
@ Nick - thanks, good to know. Just posted update to TW.
ReplyDeleteFox News just reported the issue is "personal" and he is "under the weather". This very well could be DH related. None of her prior relationships ended well. Don't be so quick to judge Andy. Bringing a different perspective is not akin to trip on the Hate Trail. The world needs more critical thinkers!
ReplyDelete@Bluemoon - thanks. point taken and the Hate Trail comment was ill advised.
ReplyDeleteSo apologies Mr Andy.
while not trying to have the last word here, we find it rather exasperating those who attribute nearly everything that Neil does or doesn;t do as being under the influence of Ms Daryl to be rather tiresome, boring and frankly unwarranted.
Agree, yes, that the world needs more critical thinkers. And the world needs less snark, fake news, and folks just making stuff up for their own amusement.
And I was just getting used to having Daryl around. 8`)
ReplyDeleteThanks TW accepted. I'm on the reality trail with my feet on the ground - I'm not critical of DH influence just surprised by it, that's all not malice intended.
ReplyDeleteIf suggesting Neil cancelled because his girlfriend made him sick is critical thinking then I don't think critical thinkers is what the world needs.
ReplyDeleteAndy, How far back would I have to go to see a post where you said something good about Neil?
Leave Andy alone.
ReplyDeleteHe is entitled to his opinion as we all are.
NO one is entitled to ad hominem attacks simply because they disagree with someone's individual opinion!
To peacelover - I think 'Through My Sails' is a great song with CSN
ReplyDeleteTom, I agreed for the first 18 months but every single comment Andy posts is anti-Neil at best. Andy is only here to be a dick.
ReplyDeleteOh grow up I was being serious for once - you just don't get it I'm not anti-Neil and wish him only the best for the future but the adorned nonsense here just grates. Is this the room for an argument? to be a dick? just childish comments.
ReplyDeleteNeil already said it
ReplyDelete"Once there was a friend of mine who died a thousand deaths,he trusted in a woman and on her he made his bets"
Leave Andy alone.
ReplyDeleteHe is entitled to his opinion as we all are.

It's always seemed to me that Andy is more of a CSN/Y fan than a fan of Neil. That being said, it seems like Andy hasn't liked much (if anything) Neil's done since the 70s. That's fine, I can deal with that too, but my primary quibble with Andy is his fixation on Daryl Hannah and that somehow Neil is a terrible human being or a hypocrite because he's no longer with Pegi.
ReplyDeleteWe'll never know what goes on in a marriage or what leads directly or indeirectly to divorce. Neil and Pegi were together for 30+ years, and yes, it's sad they didn't make it to the end, but if one or both of them thought it was best to move on, I'll never question them.
So Andy, of these, who's your favorite:
Buffalo Springfield
CSN
CSNY
Crosby/Nash
Stills/Young Bannd
Neil Young
Neil Young w/Crazy Horse
or feel free to add a write in vote...
"Take my advice
don't listen to me"
If Jackson Browne wasn't going to be a presenter would Neil be "feeling better" ?
ReplyDeletei THINK cORTEZ HAS IT NAILED.
ReplyDeleteThanks Topanga I hear what you say about DH. Not fixated just intrigued as so much of Neil's music was about his family that's all. You're wrong Neil Young has always been at the top for me and yes 1969-1979 is untouchable every record a classic. Since then we've had the odd great record like 'Ragged Glory'. So as follows.
ReplyDelete1.Neil Young
2.Stills (first solo record and the peerless Manassas)
3.BS
4.Crosby
5.CSN Y - always liked 4-way street
tied for last spot Nash & Stills Young
Good thoughts Andy and I'm glad Neil is at the top of your list. Clearly he is for me too, but there isn't really a close second including Stills, CSN, etc. Not knocking them, but for me, Neil stands alone and is at his best solo or playing with CH and now the Promise of the Real.
ReplyDeleteRe: post 70s great records, I'd include:
Freedom
Ragged Glory
Harvest Moon
Sleeps With Angels
Silver and Gold
Greendale
Prairie Wind (Maybe)
Living With War (at least very good)
Psychedelic Pill (Maybe)
And I still think Landing on Water and Life are solidly engaging entertaining diverse works, but that's a topic for another day.
So in closing, keep doing what you do, but as far as I'm concerned, just maybe add in a sprinkle of optimism from time to time and ideally leave out some of the pettier DH/NY personal references. Let the music guide the day...
"Take my advice
don't listen to me"
@Andy - thanks for the reference. we'll keep in mind while perusing future comments.
ReplyDelete@TopangaD - thanks for being a voice of reason in a wilderness.
and for letting the music guide the day... and night ...
Please forgive my unintelligible comments as I haven't put my teeth in yet this morning.
ReplyDeleteAppropriate that "Can't Find My Way Back Home" is playing on my Pandora Neil Young Channel.
Sirens howling from the ambulance coming brings to mind "They're Coming to Take me Away" and my beautiful wife Kelly says they're coming for her. Silly Lass doesn't know the half of it, that they're coming for me as "The Fool on The Hill."
It's unfathomable knowing the "influence" that "Neil the Peel" has had on me and now her after her first NYCH show, the monumental NY&CH event in Fairfax VA 30Nov2012. With our beautiful “Arkansas Girls Love Crazy Horse” moment ….”We Love You Too”! Good Lord, has it been 5 years since that show? Man, how time flies!
Anyway, we all have our paths to walk and whichever way you take, here's hoping it follows all the Love in this world. The path that The Muse has us follow. God Bless Neil and ALL the Lads & Lasses who know their life has taken a step or ten on a different course because of Neil Young. Long May You Run!
