Well -- at least for once -- we managed to get one of our annual Neil Young predictions correct.
At the International Consumer Electronics Show on Wednesday, Neil Young revealed that he will be recording a new album with Willie Nelson's sons Lukas and Micah Nelson.
Neil was interviewed by Rolling Stone Executive Editor Nathan Brackett at CES and spoke primarily abut the PONO project. From Neil Young Recording New Album With Willie Nelson's Sons | Rolling Stone By Andy Greene:
"I'm working on another album now that I'm going to do be doing with Willie Nelson's sons," he said, jokingly suggesting he would title it The Monsanto Years after the agriculture company he's been railing against for years. "It's an upbeat review of the situation."
Young was less sure about his other future plans. "I don't know much about the future," he said. "I want to [focus on Pono] and I want to continue playing music. Those two things should keep me pretty busy. I have some film editing and things to do on the side. I'll probably be writing some more books. I want to keep doing what I do. I'd like to continue doing it for a long time."
Young has no tour dates on the books right now other than an appearance at the pre-Grammy MusiCares tribute to Bob Dylan on February 6th in Los Angeles. "I did a tour last year called Honor the Treaties that went across Canada to try and help the aboriginal first nations tribes enforce their treaty rights in the constitution of Canada," he said. "If I do anything this year, I might do that again in a bigger way. At first it succeeded, but it succeeded more than the artists I was trying to get thought it would. If I do that again maybe it'll get more artists. At this point, it's interesting to try and do something meaningful and try and make some sort of a difference because I've attained a certain level that I feel a responsibility to use for positive things rather than just getting my name in People magazine or something."

From Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real | Facebook:
We have an incredible announcement to make. Neil Young has honored us by asking us to accompany him on his next recording project! Unfortunately, this means we have to reschedule all of our shows in January except the 17th, but we promise we will make it up to you and in the meantime we will be creating some beautiful music for you all to enjoy. Just as a fun fact, the band actually started when Anthony Logerfo and I met at a Neil Young concert...and the name "Promise of the Real" comes from the lines of a Neil Young song called "Walk On".(Thanks bh @ Bad News Beat!)
"Some get stoned, some get strange...
Sooner or later, it all gets real..
Walk on.."
I wonder if Neil's new bandmates have enjoyed his recent albums. I've bought that stuff out of loyalty but never actually listen to it after one-time through -- if I'm even able to get through a first listen.
ReplyDeleteExcited to hear... I've enjoyed the work he's done with them in the past few months...
ReplyDeleteI agree that his last two albums have been unlistenable but the two before that were fantastic! I sure have great hopes for this one!
ReplyDeleteStorytone is great
ReplyDeleteLove the solo version of Storytone. Could be his strongest set of songs in about 20 years. Reminds me of Harvest with songs of new love. But there's always a few gems on every album at the very least. Fork In The Road would be the only album I don't like, though even it has a song or two that made it on to the pod.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for more. I love the pace he's on right now. All his fans should be greatful. I sure hope he lives to be a hundred.

ReplyDeleteNY needs to be pushed by a younger, more energetic rhythm section, so this is good. He seems to enjoy it- he even let Lukas stretch out and solo, though he wasn't exactly able to stomp his own Whizzer. And, I detect a touch of Danny Whitten in his harmonies. Should be great, especially if it emphasizes the electric.
The Zuma Band
@ Art - loyalty ... or obligation? Maybe just another interesting exercise? Or mybe the will be the REAL deal??
ReplyDeleteWell, see you guys on the rail next time.
@Michael - we're also excited by the possibilities. Likely to be ragged but REAL.
@ mrtew - well you know what they say about hope...
@ Keith Burris - Whatever one may think of Storytone, someday it will be pretty essential to understanding the "Ranch Blues" period. Sort of a Today's the Day reprise 40+ years after TTN.
@ Syscrusher - Agree with your Harvest analogy of new love songs. And if he lives to be a hundred.... all bets are off...
@ Unknown/ZB - Lukas definitely has a lot of fire in his belly which must resonate with Neil and be part of the attraction. Interesting on the Danny Whitten harmonies. Need to be on the lookout for that.
Agree with the notion that the biggest thing to feel re NY is gratitude
ReplyDeleteHo Hum, another Neil Young album. I remember when I used to get excited, now it's, 'Oh, another one?'
ReplyDeleteSurely it can't be any worse than Storytone, though.
