The April Fool's Joke That Wasn't: Neil Young's "Time Fades Away" Re-release

Neil Young's "Time Fades Away"

Here's an April Fool's joke that turned out to be true.

As our delightful regular readers know, each year on April Fool's Day, we post some amusingly intriguing little item of Neil silliness.

Back on April 1, 2009, we ran a post with the news that Neil Young's Time Fades Away To Finally Be Re-released. This naturally created great excitement among fans who then discovered that the release would be only available on vinyl records. The comments on the post were quite amusing as fans reacted in semi-faux outrage that they were being denied a proper digital release.

So here we are, 5 years later and it turns out that Neil Young's "Time Fades Away" re-release will indeed be limited to a vinyl record only without a CD/digital release. News that Neil Young's "Ditch Quadrilogy" Re-Release Delayed Until November 2014 has been somewhat muted partially in reaction to the successful PONO launch. The release of Young's upcoming Neil Young Official Series 2 Vinyl Box Set was intended to come out on Record Store Day. A November release date for the set is now planned, which includes the classic albums Time Fades Away, On The Beach, Tonight's The Night and Zuma.

Neil Young's Time Fades Away To Finally Be Re-released

In a stunning decision, Neil Young has announced that he will be re-releasing "Time Fades Away" on June 2. This decision pushes back the release on The Neil Young Archives Volume 1 which had been scheduled for this release date.

The announcement comes after a 4 year campaign by fans to have "Time Fades Away" re-released after being out of print since the mid-1980's. The online petition campaign began in February 2005 and has received over 15,000 signatures thus far.

In a statement, Neil Young said:
"My fans have spoken. They want to hear "Time Fades Away" after being out of print for so long. And in order to satisfy my fans, I'm going to re-release the album in it's original format only -- vinyl.

As far as the Archives go, well they've waited this long, so they can wait a little while later. It was a tough decision because I never really cared that much for the album. But after hearing all the complaints about the Archives Box set and trying to address them, I feel that re-releasing "Time Fades Away" is my only option to placate my fan base."

The statement goes on to say that the vinyl album will also be available as a deluxe version with new music videos for each song. The videos will be included on a VHS tape in the deluxe version along with the original lyrics sheet that the 1973 release contained.

Probably no one is more surprised with this announcement than ourselves given that we have long maintained that the Archives most likely will be released before TFA.

Given these developments, Thrasher's Wheat plans to suspend the online petition campaign. But we will not do so until we have the re-release in our hands. Or The Archives.

Happy ARC Day!

  1. So where have you seen an official announcement that Original Release Series 5-8 will be vinyl only? ORS 1-4 was released in both CD and vinyl, and it stands to reason that the same will hold true for 5-8, even if the initial release might be the vinyl box set. And as for digital, while 1-4 didn't come out that way, the advent of Pono seems to make it a no-brainer for 5-8 (since the remasters now can be presented properly in high-resolution digital). Would imagine 1-4 will end up on Pono as well.

  2. Can we make this just a little more confusing?

  3. Happy ARC Day!

OK, some maybe not our best ARC Day posting and it all does seem a little confusing with formats and dates, etc.

It was our understanding that only a vinyl box would be out on RSD.

Didn't mean to imply either as the joke (or not) that there wouldn't be a TFA CD... someday.

Will try and come up with a better ARC Day post next year. Certainly something will up. Like Neil starts taking requests from the audience and becomes a human jukebox.

Now who would fall for that??? ;)

I heard that the Japan release will have each Time Fades Away song packaged on individual mini disc, and that the deluxe video content will come on a Laser Disc, flavors SECAM and PAL only. I got a buddy at Warner who's in the know.

  5. I'm happy to say that I still own the original vinyl releases of Time Fades Away, On The Beach, Tonight's The Night and Zuma.

Only problem is I don't currently have a receiver or speakers to go with my turntable!

  6. @reg stairs - good one. Maybe the remastering of TFA was in Jack White's record booth?

Anyways, like we said, this ARC day post isn't going so well this year.

We had thought about doing something funny on PONO like the whole Toberlone chocolate thing but didn't want to mess with PONO's karma.

See, even when we get accused of taking all this stuff too seriously, look what happens?!

But feel free to submit your own humor as appropriate. :) Maybe we'll use next year??

    Press Release…..

The Obama Administration has named Neil Young to head up the Presidential Council on Physical Fitness Program. Neil, awarded Rocker Emeritus status, enthusiastically kicked off his new role on Sunday night in Los Angeles at Dolby Theater, leading an audience of 3000 through proper group stretching mechanics.

According to Neil, if you stretch properly during the show, the audience is less inclined to yell out obnoxious song requests like "Cinnamon Girl," disrupting concert flow and raising blood pressures.

Rocker Young stated - "At my age, I don't need the Agida. Stretching seems to work better than me screaming "FU" at the top of my lungs."

Long May You Stretch, err, Run…...

  9. I seem to recall this from a few years back.

    (AP)Redwood California:
Rocker Neil Young, caving in to fan pressure for the first time in history, is set to release a new song on Wednesday written after agonizing over blogger response to his new Fork In The Road album. Says Young, " You know the pressure of everyday stardom has begun to really bother me, so, in an effort the placate the 100 or so fans that I have left, I decided to really concentrate on their opinions of my new stuff. I can't believe I haven't been sensitive to their wants and desires over the past 40 years. I cried to my wife Peg for hours over this. Finally after the tears dried, I was able to really commit to something so powerful that I couldn't deny it anymore. I really hope they like this new one"

Young has allowed release of these new lyrics in advance of the song. Finally, we can all agree that he has written a true masterpiece.

I've been alive forever, and I wrote the very first song
I put the words and the melodies together
I am music and I write the songs

I write the songs that make the whole world sing
I write the songs of love and special things
I write the songs that make the young girls cry
I write the songs, I write the songs

My home lies deep within you
And I've got my own place in your soul
Now, when I look out through your eyes
I'm young again, even though I'm very old

Oh my music makes you dance
And gives you spirit to take a chance
And I wrote some rock 'n' roll so you can move
    Music fills your heart
Well, that's a real fine place to start
It's from me it's for you
It's from you, it's for me
    It's a worldwide symphony

  12. Today, the FBI raided Neil Young’s North California ranch, loaded with search warrants, and were later seen carrying out hundreds of file boxes and electronic gear as the vaunted rocker was rumored to be under suspicion of launching such a scheme, otherwise known as his Kickstarter campaign for his so-called high-quality portable music delivery device known as the PonoPlayer. “The similarity between the names Pono and Ponzi is so ironic it’s impossible to ignore,” noted Rolling Stone impresario Jann Wenner, long a Young supporter, in an editorial for his publication. “I hate to say it, but it looks like somebody’s powderfingers are about to get burned.”

Full details are sketchy, and an indictment has yet to be handed down. But it is telling that the raid coincided with the news that the crowdfunding campaign for the PonoPlayer had just reached a significant milestone. As TechCrunch notes, “The portable music player is alive and well. Pono Music’s PonoPlayer just crossed the $5 million milestone on Kickstarter, making it the fourth most funded project in the site’s history. Twelve thousand backers have pledged enough to pre-order the device. And there is still 16 days to go on its campaign.”
