As we often like to say, expect the unexpected from Neil.

Some major Neil Young news via bh @ BNB
Scott @ NYAS reports:
Confirmation that Neil's next album was recorded in Jack White's record booth.

It should be out sometime in the new year. I don't know its release details but would be surprised if it's only available via Third Man. But this is Neil, so who knows. I anticipate this will be a very big seller. It is an album of covers. In it, as anticipated, he pays tribute to other renowned singer-songwriters. There are 12 tracks on it. There are no Neil Young originals, but...each side starts with an introduction (part 1, part 2) of the same title. That could be a Neil Young original although I have another theory on what these might be... A couple of the songs chosen will astonish you. Sorry for the secrecy but more on this might leak soon...

Ralf speculates:
I guess the regular Album will be released by Warner/Reprise but Jack Whites "Third Man" label will release exclusive a special edition of twelve 6" vinyl 111 seconds copies which were cut directly in the booth. This wouldn't affect Neil's contract with Warner. Perhaps it will also be the start of Neil's PONO system.

Neil Young joins the list of top stars on the Cathedral Square, "said mayor for finance Gunter Czisch at a press conference at City Hall. The concert was also a "tourist attraction that will lure across regions, many visitors to Ulm." Neil Young, who celebrated his first success in the 60s and is often referred to as the inventor of grunge because of its distorted guitar tones, was in 2012 by Rolling Stone chosen Magazine Artist of the Year. too, with 68 years playing the Canadian impressive, energetic concerts. 2. This explains the Farm Aid set.
Neil has been following the same pattern for as long as I can remember.
He road tests new songs before the album is even recorded and/or released.
Expect good things from the NY shows next month.

  5. Yes SandCowgirl it is fantastic news on all fronts.

Try and bring some good will back to Europe fans. CH rides again.

Poncho's hand is better. Whatever real or imagined difficulties between him & Neil are resolved.

At this point, don't rule out the box set or CSNY. Maybe no CSNY this summer but maybe again.

    Don't say it's over...

  6. Based on the Farm Aid setlist, and his recent cover of Needle of Death, we can presume some of the covers are by...

    Bob Dylan
    Gordon Lightfoot
    Hank Williams
    Tim Hardin
    Phil Ochs
    Ivory Joe Hunter
    Bert Jansch

I'd love it if Leonard Cohen and Lou Reed were in there too.

There were some German sources that mention Saturday, July 20 and here it says tickets on Tuesday, December 11 - has anybody checked a calendar? July 20, 2014 is a Sunday and December 11, 2013 is a Wednesday!
    That's news from last year!

  8. So, maybe my tickets for The Capital Theater in Port Chester will be valid? :) ... I am excited to see Neil @ Carnegie Hall but I just can't seem to get excited about seeing him doing a bunch of covers. (Yes, I'm still WAY dissapointed about missing out on seeing Psycedelic Pill again!)

  9. Thrasher, you're implying there were problems between Neil and Poncho? I had not heard that before. Was there friction? Couldn't tell by looking at them.

I hope the quality of his Jack White Record Booth album is better than this -

That gets hard on the ears in a hurry! Yeah, launch Pono with a recording that sounds like it was made in Robert Johnson's day. That would actually be kinda awesome in a weird Neil sort of way! I still doubt Pono will even be released at all. I've been watching that guitar picture go from grainy to clear for seems like forever now. I signed up for the newsletter too. Should be coming any day now.

And that Trunk Show trailer never gets old!

And now two out of his last three albums are cover records! That's never a good sign, although this one sounds more interesting than Americana. And while it was awesome to have a new Crazy Horse album, Pill doesn't exactly rank near the top of the list. Hell, Greendale is still the best thing he's done in the last 10 years. It was awesome seeing the Horse live though!! Very much so.

No CSN&Y, No Crazy Horse. Enjoy the high priced covers show at Carnegie Hall folks. He'll throw in a few you know so the casual fans don't go home totally pissed.

It's not over but its getting close.

  10. No Crazy Horse?

Neil Young und seine Band Crazy Horse treten am 20. Juli 2014 in Ulm auf dem Münsterplatz auf.

  11. All I will say is. I will be very happy indeed if Crazy Horse have rescheduled the London show.

...Can't say I'm particularly thrilled by the idea of a covers album; Neil seemed a bit depressed at Farm Aid, "life is short" and all that...a few shows with Crazy Horse is just what the Doctor ordered!

    The Flying Scotsman.

  12. I really enjoyed the FarmAid covers! Neil singing Changes is simply great! And the new Cellar Door is a blast on vinyl!!!

  13. Experience tells me to trust Neil and his MUSE but I'm praying that Carnegie Hall isn't a covers show ...

  14. What is wrong with a covers show if the songs are great and Neil is singing them?

  15. Okay negative folks, Neil changed his mind:

  16. @vertigone - good call.

@Johnny TheSongDog - yes, we're a bit confused also since source links were in German and we've been relying on translations. Any updates on what the real scoop is here is appreciated.

@ TomCrac - good luck! We'd love to see Port Chester rescheduled too.

@NM - only reflecting back what some have speculated on every since news on Poncho's injury. Frankly, we never put much credence in a new Poncho/Neil rift. Just watching them during FU, it all seemed so genuine that it's hard to believe things could be so much different backstage.

@Dan1 - The Muse has gotten us this far why stop listening now?

@BSM - (golf clap) well played, sir.

  17. I really hope it won't be such a sloppy disc like Americana again. Please put some effort in it this time, Neil!

  18. Thrasher, you're 100% right ... that was my alter ego speaking ... its sort of a discipline sometimes to sit back, relax and enjoy the ride (and have no expectations) even though thats ALWAYS the way to go w/ Neil ... but I can't help but hope for something akin to 2007 theatre tour first set (beautifully captured on Trunk Show) ... the whole thing, set list and all was completely sublime ... if its really 100% covers (which I doubt) I'm sure it'll be amazing, because whatever Neil feels like playing he somehow brings it to life in a way only he can ... but life is short and there's so many gems in his canon ... so, call me (happily) conflicted

  19. Well said Dan1! Seriously. That's the ONLY way you can go with Neil or you'll get all negative and shit.

  20. "Young will perform Reeds classic album Metal Machine Music in its entirety." That's hilarious!!! Even Lou Reed couldn't play 5 minutes of that album again 5 minutes later... it's just random feedback. I love it don't get me wrong, but it's not like anyone could do it again.
