A new video of "She Moves Me" (Farmer John) is now posted on Times-Contrarian | Neil Young Archives.
The video is from Neil Young's upcoming album "Fu##n' Up" with Crazy Horse scheduled for release on April 26.
The live concert album is from the Rivoli, Toronto, 4 Nov 2023, which featured a setlist of songs from the 1990 album "Ragged Glory" album.

Neil & the Horse
So nice to see Neil having fun playing Farmer John in this video. For me, Ragged Glory was the first NY album I bought the day it went on sale. This became a tradition for me and I have rarely missed the chance. But that album is the bedrock of my love for Neil Young & Crazy Horse, one of my all time favorite albums. I had been drawn in to the music of Neil Young by Freedom & This Notes For You. In the late 1980’s. That is when I got hooked. Thanks Neil! Thanks also to CH, the Horse!
ReplyDelete“Farmer John” is a classic, a funny rock song that is a cousin of “Don’t Spook the Horse” perhaps. I hope to see it live on tour in April. Champagne Eyes… it’s a juvenile song but a great one at that!
I have bought a few albums by Particle Kid and I am enjoying them. Aside from guitar skills and a good singing voice, Micah Nelson creates his own psychedelic world with his music, a world of sounds in which anything can happen. I am looking forward to his upcoming local show & I plan to make the most of it with a few friends. The venue is tiny, which is my favorite kind. I will come up with a show report for TW.

ReplyDeleteI finally got the chance to check out this video performance, and I must say that from the songs that have already been shared, this is perhaps one of the most ragged performances of all time. I would even say sloppy. But I mean that as a huge compliment. It’s obvious they’re having fun, and completely relaxed. And they are definitely in the moment, and the so called mistakes are what makes this so appealing. This is a live performance from flawed human beings who are extremely talented, and they are confident enough to just relax and play in the moment. I find this far more satisfying than a perfect replica of the original record. The human element is what makes this so special.
ReplyDeleteTechnology has become so powerful that it has robbed music of its humanity. The allure of perfection has become so prevalent in live performances that you can’t be sure you’re not just hearing a studio recording in a live setting. There is no question with this performance that you are definitely hearing all the imperfections that are present. And I am so grateful that Neil Young & Crazy Horse are comfortable enough to let us experience it.

In other news, Neil Young apparently is working on a CSNY double live album consisting of tracks recorded at the Fillmore East in 1969. In his announcement he is referring to the show on September 20 of this year because he mentions Nash's "Our House" being a track performed solo being a brand new addition to thir setlist (it was not performed on the night before, according to the Sugar Mountain setlists). It looks like his "first take- best take" approach now also pertains to CSNY releases.

This while everybody is anticipating a NY & The Horse tour, a 2024 live album being imminent, hoping for the NYA Vol. III box release in summer and expecting more ORS box set releases.
And what happened to the Canary Bird novel?
when does sloppy become bad? Surely there is a point.
ReplyDelete@ Abner : I think sloppy becomes bad when there is obviously no intention or commitment to the performance. The human factor prevents perfection in a live performance in most cases, but there’s always exceptions of course. Neil & the Horse have been perfect on many occasions, but more often than not perfection is elusive. My thoughts on this particular performance were meant to convey my enthusiasm for the imperfections. I prefer them to an exact replica of what has already been released. Regardless of the imperfections within these performances, everyone involved is totally committed to the music.

Dan, I am in agreement with you. My question came out of listening to Over and Over. I do like the Ragged Glory version a lot more mainly because it is a bit smoother. The solos seem more connected to the lyrics. There are definite problems with spontaneity, edges that are perhaps too rough.
ReplyDelete@Abner: I completely understand. The performances (so far) appear a bit ragged around the edges, but they do seem to be so relaxed. There doesn’t seem to be any evidence of them attempting to impress anyone. That in itself is a bonus for me, and the video shows that they were clearly enjoying the experience. I’m hesitant to critique the whole album until I hear it in its entirety, but so far it sounds like it may very well be divisive with the fan base. Not everyone has the patience for what some may refer to as self indulgent music. Time will tell.

You know Dan, I had a feeling you and I would meet up on an essential point. The endeavor to impress is so tiring and stupid. Our lives are often surrounded by this nonsense and our culture promotes it. I think it is part of why there are "trolls." The desire and ability to impress makes others feel less valued and inferior. Thanks for your words through the years. It would be great to meet up at some point.
ReplyDeleteI don't have specific impressions yet of "Broken Circle" or "She Moves Me." (I'm again behind due to "real life" factors in the last few weeks...) Generally, I think sloppy is a problem or detraction when it's directionless and/or doesn't stir up a compelling affect (emotions) or effect (impressions) for the audience. And by compelling, I just mean something that's worth experiencing!
ReplyDeleteAdmittedly, this is a somewhat subjective definition. The word impression, incidentally, comes from the same root as impress. In everyday talk, to impress means to make someone think more highly of you. This also has deceptive or manipulative connotations. In the original (or is it archaic?) sense, to impress is to leave a mark or lasting impact of any kind on someone. To engrave or imprint would be close to the basic meaning.
