A 50th anniversary edition of Neil Young's On The Beach album is being planned, per a recent Letter to Editor on Neil Young Archives.
"Yes. we will be having a ‘50th’ On the beach. i am getting right on it."
In 2022, we posted on The Essentials: On the Beach by Neil Young | The Old Grey Cat where the album OTB is considered to be the critical link in Neil Young's "Ditch Trilogy/Quadrilogy".
We sense a surge in relevance of On the Beach to the these times in which we live. The parallels between the 1970's and today are unmistakable to all but those asleep and unaware of the pending Big Shift.

Hopefully with proper vinyl reprinting with the umbrella design inside jacket.
It was kinda a disappoint when TTN album vinyl re-release didn't include run out groove etching.
Certainly no detail will go unmissed w/ OTB 50th.
Don't do it, Neil. Please leave On The Beach as it is, always was, and hopefully always will be. No extra songs, no outtakes, no filler, none of that garbage.
ReplyDeleteYou released a perfect album in 1974, nothing can improve on that. Anything you add takes away from the masterpiece, which is often the case when artists cash in on some meaningless anniversary crap. If anything was left off the original, there's a reason. What was originally released was perfect.
I know I'm probably a lone wolf on the subject, but I've always believed you're okay being a lone wolf most of the time as well. I know the Neil Young of 1974 would think this is a bad idea, I'm hoping the Neil Young of 2023 still feels the same. Please leave On The Beach as it was meant to be. Hope you think about it.
Have an issue with concept of a Quadrilory instead of a Trilogy .Having lived through the release of the first three albums and going from disliking ,not relating ,I was too young and not life experienced to fully understand the full meanings of a lot of the songs.I always saw Zuma as a return of the Horse while the other albums were a more personal insight to Neil's state of mind. I suppose you should include Homegrown because of the time frame but I prefer to have the trilogy be left as it was
ReplyDeleteOn The Beach will always be a masterpiece. We have our Records. Nobody is shoving extra tracks onto it. No. Need to buy it or listen to it.
ReplyDeleteBut I am very curious to hear what there is to hear in related outtakes, definitely. Other versions of songs are valued by nearly all of us. Let us have it all….

ReplyDeleteI'm sure it'll be incredibly overpriced as all anniversary sets always are. That latest Dark Side of the Moon release was like 300 dollars for what essentially added up to a bunch of high quality cardboard.
ReplyDelete"Citizen Kane jr. Blues" aka Live at the Bottom Line 1974, has great acoustic versions of 4 On the Beach songs, including all of Side 2. This show occurred before the release of OTB, so they were new songs to the audience. https://bit.ly/42gMg87

After more closely listening to "For the Turnstiles" and "Flying on the Ground is wrong" on the WNEW tape, I'm fairly certain that they're not from the Bottom Line show. The former has a background singer on the chorus. On the latter, Neil sounds different -- stoned, frankly.
