What with Spotify bringing Neil Young back and dropping Joe Rogan, Neil and David Crosby recording a new track together on Ukraine and Canada liberation, the CSNY Reunion Summer Tour announcement, and the upcoming Crazy Horse Electric Train Spring Tour the following Neil news seems almost trivial.
Oh, these contrarian times in which we live. Such a joy.

We’ve just published two new outtakes on NYA: The original live performances of Natural Beauty (Harvest Moon) and Inca Queen (Life) without the studio overdubs recorded for the album versions.
Inca Queen was performed with Crazy Horse at the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles during the 1986 Rusted Out Garage Tour — a rollicking good time that will be well-represented on the forthcoming Archives Vol III.
Natural Beauty was performed at the Portland Civic Auditoreum during the first of several now-legendary 1992 solo tours — see Dreamin’ Man Live ‘92 if this recording whets your appetite.

This is definitely cool. But I've heard the bootlegs, and the only thing that excites me is when Neil sings lead vocals. The Ducks did not have my two favorite members from Moby grape which was skip Spence and Peter Lewis. Nonetheless, this is a great addition to Neil's archives from his 1977 residency with this cool bar band.

@ rider - yeah, cool that Ducks might see the light. right, the Moby Grape angle is interesting and maybe more will be learned.
lots of funny stories about the coastal bar tour.
legend has it that some folks brought duck calls to shows and would quack instead of clap. but audience tapes don't really verify that. maybe these tapes will confirm the legend for all. The Ducks sounded like quacks?!
I have a couple of friends here in Santa Cruz who saw The Ducks back in 1977. And yes, the stories about the duck calls were definitely true, I believe they were actually given out to people at a couple of the shows. That was the summer when Neil could be seen anytime riding his bike around Santa Cruz. Supposedly he went to the Del Mar Theater to see Star Wars a bunch of times. Many years later, I watched the Greendale film at the same theater with Neil and Pegi in attendance.
ReplyDeleteAlmost all of the places The Ducks played that summer have turned into different businesses. One of the places is now a public library near the Pleasure Point part of town. I've visited all of them, and you can't imagine how TINY a couple are. It must have been pretty cramped with the band and audience in them. I believe even The Catalyst was at its original Front St address back then, though I could be wrong on that.
The Ducks sounds like a cool document of a laid-back seventies summer, will spin it for sure on the site, even if Neil only sings in a fraction of the tunes.
ReplyDeleteGave another listen to Inca Queen over the weekend. The LP version is still my favorite because of the low-pitched, repeated “Inca Queen has…” added in the studio. But it’s a tough choice, because this outtake mix is fresher sounding overall.
