Neil Young's "ROXY TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT LIVE" is set for release on 4/24.
Here's clip on Neil Young's "ROXY TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT LIVE" from PitchFork Review by Erin Osmon:
Young and the Flyers spent the summer months of 1973 playing through their grief, forming the bones of what would become Young’S 1975 album Tonight’s The Night. They worked from 11 p.m. until sunrise, cruising—or flying, if you will—down Santa Monica Boulevard to sleep off the daylight hours at the Sunset Marquis hotel. When they hit The Roxy with the brand new songs they’d been rehearsing for months, the group was a lockstep machine that propelled, for example, “Tonight’s the Night,” “Albuquerque,” and “Tired Eyes” from insular meditation on death and its trappings to an amped-up catharsis to adoring fans. In the studio, Tonight’s the Night was imposing and dark, it sliced through the speaker like a razor. Live, though, these songs from Young’s famous “Ditch Trilogy” become warmer, more vibrant and alive. It’s a testament to Young’s indelible songwriting that a slight alteration in speed or sound can change the emotional tenor of his songs, and it's what makes this reissue a worthy addition for both avid Young collectors and casual fans.Full review of Neil Young's "ROXY TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT LIVE" at PitchFork by Erin Osmon.
Roxy - Tonight’s the Night Live imbues the songs with the spirit of a specific place in time, at the Sunset Strip’s newest digs, where Young’s soon-to-be label boss David Geffen was a face in the crowd. Young tips his hat to Geffen specifically in a chatty interlude included between “New Mama” and “Roll Another Number (For the Road),” and there are other improvised bridges like polka mainstay “Roll Out the Barrel,” which the audience audibly digs via claps and whoops. That a group of people could be so jubilant about songs they’d never heard before is unfathomable in today’s firehose of festival reunions, but it speaks to the magnitude of Young’s pull in 1973.

Why are these releases labelled as "reissues"? Anywho looking forward to grabbing on Record Store Day. Bring it on along with Alchemy and more!
ReplyDeletejust Speaking Out in NY here, but this is the grail for me. TTN is TNT. It takes you to the end of the rope and swings you around for as long as you can hold on. Roxy should be able to burn your hands and your imagination in the process. Neil is sending out the feel. Buy the ticket and take the ride. Finally, it's time.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to it, but the Roxy was a firecracker compared to the WMD of the British tour - too bad there are no multitracks of those shows to release.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to hearing this release. Tonight’s the Night has always been one of my favorite albums of all time. Getting a live release is just frosting on the cake, but I feel this as a missed opportunity for fans of this period of Neil’s journey to experience how these shows evolved over six nights.
ReplyDeleteOh well, as others have said, it’s his music and he will do as he wishes. Something is always better than nothing and I’m excited to hear the music.
Peace
@ Andy - hmm, not sure about why this might be labelled as "reissue"? Mistake?
ReplyDelete@ SONY - great to hear you Speaking Out in NY! It's been awhile.
Exactly ... bought the ticket and enjoying the ride.
open the tired eyes .. and tired ears, as well ...
@ Babbo - right, the British tour may have been where the true legend of TTN took place. As opposed to sunny LA @ The Roxy.
@ Dan - maybe someday we'll hear the evolution over six nights. But that doesn't seem to be Neil's approach at this time. Maybe the deep tracks are being saved once the full Archives release is achieved. Should be about July 2045 or so.
Peace
UNCUT review 10/10 - says it all
ReplyDeleteThe record jacket says it's "Performance Series Vol 05...the internet lists it as Vol. 04. Strange...the only thing I could think of that has been pushed into Volume 04 now is "Time Fades Away II".
