And now for something completely different...
Neil Young and DRAM (born in Munich, Germany) recorded the song in the Shangri La Studios with producer Rick Rubin. Simultaneously, Neil Young worked on the album "EARTH", which DRAM had backing vocals for the song "People Want To Hear About Love".

ReplyDeleteI love it. Cool to hear him out of his comfort zone a bit. DRAM's vocals on this are great, the guitar has vibe, it's a cool song, and maybe something for another generation to hear Neil, who sounds tuned in and right on here. I've listened to it a bit since Friday and I like it more every time. It's definitely new, it's accessible, and yet somehow it's still weird and singular. Never thought of a collaboration like this, and when I heard about it I was intrigued to see what type of mess might come of it. Now I'd like to hear more!

ReplyDeleteLove this. Occupies the same eerie area of Carnevale on The Visitor. Love to see him work with Rick Rubin, Jim James or Ryan Bingham as the producer on a true solo album. A tribute to the open aired world of Ben Keith and Ian Tyson.
ReplyDeleteI have just been listening to Neil and Pegi singing Four Strong Winds at Live 8. Wonderful.
ReplyDeleteAnd my son told me recently that he had listened to The Visitor and the Psychedelic Pill back to back. Whilst he 'quite liked' The Visitor he said that Neil and Crazy Horse were something else. Weren't they just?
Now this collaboration with Dram - not for me at all.
But - and here is the point - it confirms my view that Neil is desperately trying to recapture his youth: he and Pegi split up; he gets the younger model(DH); he plays with POTR - the younger group; and now hip hop with Dram.
I find it all very sad. Neil and Pegi had been together so long (and I have no idea why they split up; sometimes these things happen; but for a younger model?). We all grow older; and growing old is something that we should accept and embrace; seeing people in their seventh decade fight against it is just sad. And Neil has never struck me as sad. Ramada Inn has a wisdom, a maturity and appreciation of the changes in a relationship that speaks to us all.
But POTR and Dram - just sad.
I earnestly hope that one day Neil will saddle up the old Crazy Horse for one last album.
But maybe that's just because I am old and have followed Neil and his music since 1971.
@ Julie - thanks for the thoughts here. While we do not fully agree, we know that many out there share similar feelings.
ReplyDeleteAs for what's going on here with DRAM, we can't say we have anymore clue than anyone else.
Our hunch would be quite prosaic based on the background cited above. Just random happen stance. Nothing premeditated and strategized.
Neil was recording EARTH @ Shangri La Studios with producer Rick Rubin. Maybe DRAM just happened to be around working on another project when Neil needed some backing vocals for the song "People Want To Hear About Love".
At that's all there is to it.
As for the Pegi/Daryl business, it seems all rather clear on the Storytone album what happened. Maybe pull it out and give it another spin? We think it might cause you to rethink your theories.
