Neil Young Archives in NYA-SRS Order

Neil Young | Hitchhiker
(Click to enlarge & preview tracks)

Neil Young's new album 'Hitchhiker' was released last week and is currently #4 #3 #2 on Amazon Top Sellers.

Which raises the all essential question of "So what is the sequence for releasing the Neil Young Archives in NYA-SRS (Neil Young Archives - Studio Release Series) order?

From comment on Beyond 'Hitchhiker': 15 Archival Neil Young Albums We'd Like to Hear | Rolling Stone by Lone Red Rider:
Well, Now we know that Hitchhiker is the first NYAPS-SRS disk. #5 to be exact. Isn't that provocative? Recall all of the speculation of what the NYA-PS disks would be? We can now map out the blueprint of the Archives in NYA-SRS order. I might as well take a first crack at it, here on TW, as it fits with this thread:

#0) Early Daze: Early Crazy Horse materials with and without Neil. A celebration of Danny!
#1) Tonight's The Night: The original unreleased Briggs mix with drunken studio chatter.
#1.5) Human Highway (CSNY). I always doubted there was enough for an album, but Neil has talked about it as a "whole unreleased album"
#2) The stony collection of tracks Neil did after the 1974 CSNY tour (mentioned in one of his books)
#3) Homegrown!
#4) Dume
#5) Hitchhiker
#6) Chrome Dreams (though I wonder if this release was gutted by Hitchhiker)
#7) Oceanside-Countryside
#8) Old Ways (Original 1983 version)
#8.5) Meadow Dusk (sorry, I don't believe in this one)
#9) Time Square
#10) Toast
Nice blueprint there Lone Red Rider. And good to see another visitor. Never too late to cause a stir.

Also, more on unreleased Neil Young albums and other rarities.

  1. I'd love to see Island in the Sun find it's way out too. 80s Neil is so underrated

  2. Agree with Alex about 80's Neil. Archives Volume 3 could completely alter people's perception of that period.

    As for the SRS, perhaps:

    1. Times Fades Away II
    2. Original Tonight's The Night
    3. Dume
    4. Homegrown
    5. Hitchhiker

  3. 4 would come before 3 on that list, just to be nitpicky. And back in 2010, the original announcement of the Special Release Series on Neil's website said it would include the planned Odeon-Budokan live Horse album from March 1976, which also predates Hitchhiker, though some argue that all the live stuff (including TFA II) will end up in the Performance Series.

  5. I'll give it a go:

1 - Time Fades Away (ranch sessions that gave us Lookout Joe and Borrowed Tune)
Maybe Time Fades Away 2 would be live PS.
    2. Tonight's The Night
    3. Homegrown
    4. Dume
    5. Hitchhiker
    6. Oceanside-Countryside
    7. Not sure, maybe more from sessions that gave us first side of American Stars n Bars?
    8. Again maybe sessions from second side of Hawks and Doves?

Well that's just Vol. 2 period. Kind of agree about not seeing Chrome Dreams, won't there be some crossover between Dume, Hitchhiker and Oceanside?

  6. my favorite neil young recording --- its on youtube --- and I think its a bootleg --- 1970 KQED studios san Francisco --- neil solo either in the tv or radio studio --- and maybe outside the studio ? --- this is when he first bought the ranch --- and its good quality recording --- pure and simple neil in great form --- I listened to this live from our commune in Mendocino ( r crumb was our neighbor )

  7. Hi Thrasher. I did a bit more homework on my listed #2. It can better be described as a collection of 20 songs written in a drunken state of mind following the On The Bach sessions, with Neil in Hawaii and discovering that Carrie was cheating on him. "What goes around, comes around" as Young wrote about it in Waging Heavy Peace. He describes the tapes as "in a shambles" and being sorted through for Archives vol 2. So, perhaps these were written BEFORE the CSNY 1974 tour. Potentially pre-dating his trip to Europe/Amsterdam in Wembley. Hard to tell if these songs were lumped in with the "Water Album" or even pre--dating them. Could be a very fascinating collection.
