On the first day of 2017, an email arrived from our friend Vic with the attached image above.
We had never seen this painting The Chaff Cutter by David Teniers ("The Younger") before and were immediately awestruck. David Teniers the Younger (15 December 1610 – 25 April 1690) was a Flemish artist born in Antwerp, the son of David Teniers the Elder. Producing over two thousand paintings, David Teniers the Younger was honoured as one of the greatest painters in Europe during his time.
Our friend Vic, encouraged us here at Thrasher's Wheat to keep on "separating the wheat from the chaff".
Well, Vic, we plan to continue to separate the wheat from the chaff. Or the REAL from the Fake. Or The Truth from the Lie.
So, behold if you will, the literal visualization of separating the wheat from the chaff. (We would like to suggest opening up the above image full size in a separate window in order to examine the painting's rich details.)
Since 1996. 20 years and still going. And our little claim to fame has still gone unchallenged, debunked or declared "fake". Again, The Truth. We take no special honor or priviledge in being more often consistently right than the so called "experts". We only ask that everyone, please use full disCERNment at all times.
Teniers the Younger's "The Chaff-cutter" depicts a scene of 17th century peasant life. From Dulwich Picture Gallery:
The man is cutting straw into fine pieces (known as chaff, which is commonly used as fodder for livestock) most likely for the white horse in the picture. A saddle bag on the ground indicates that this is a working horse, and that the man may have just returned from a journey on horseback. The horse is already grazing on some hay. We see chicken, a key source of sustenance for the peasants, wandering around in the foreground. Birds nesting in the dovecote may have been kept for their flesh and eggs. Teniers was known for his paintings of peasant scenes and this is an example of an illustration of rural life, highlighting the strong interdependence between man and beast.
Properly speaking, "David "The Younger" Teniers is the last representative of the great Flemish traditions of the 17th century."[1]
So what exactly might any of this wheat and chaff stuff have to do with anything at all -- much less on a Neil Young music blog?
Well, if you have a moment for some rambling readings that meander and thrash about here and there, then here you go. Down the rabbit hole... into the Land of OZ ... on through the looking glass matrix...
- The Illusion of The Matrix Shatters: Corruption, Fake News & The Big Shift
- Sooner of later it all get REAL.
And -- if you want to really wild and crazy -- we can heartily recommend this website on Antique Farm Tools and an excellent discussion on chaff cutting tools. Because everyone knows you can never have too many wheat harvesters...
Such is the synchronicity of Thrasher's Wheat. (Thanks Vic! We promise to keep it all REAL.)
Matthew 3:11-12 - "As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. "His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and *He will gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire."
nice to see you quote from the New Testament, Thrasher.....ah yes.....truth at last.....God bless you God bless DJT & God bless America....I'm just a poor wayfarin' stranger....

ReplyDeleteGod bless Earth. "We are the people known as Earth."
ReplyDeleteAs for DJT, I guess so. Clearly he's going to need all the help he can get, and so are we at this rate.
It is so special to see the scripture verse incorporated with the message of keeping it real and seeking the truth, always. These times are not always about that. One has to be on guard, and seek that Higher power to discern what is going on around us. Whenever I hear an interveiw with Neil, that honesty stands out loud and clear. Neil is such a great ambassador for living simple and honestly, plus he entertains us like no one else!
ReplyDeleteKEEP ON ROCKIN' IN THE FREE WORLD, and follow the music in your head and heart.
I also was happy to see scripture quoted here on Thrasher. A living word indeed. Now is a time to listen to that word. Scripture mentions nothing about the need for walls separating us from each other. We are all one people, and only culture separates us. Everyone laughs and cries in the same language.
ReplyDeletePeace to ALL.
Thanks to all for feedback.
ReplyDeletenice to see that quoting Bible scripture didn't set off some sort of backlash. Seems to be the signs of the times, these days.
Actually, we half anticipated some Bible bashing to occur. Thankfully, not. If that had backfired, than we planned to have said that it is our understanding that this passage referencing "Separating the Wheat from the Chaff" can be found in all major religious texts similar to The Golden Rule and other universal truths.
peace & goodwill to ALL
Thrasher, all differences aside, I hope this can be an interfaith, open-ended space where all kinds of beliefs and ideas can fit under the Neil Young umbrella, as long as we all treat each other with kindness and respect and are able to discuss, agree, and disagree candidly and amicably.

ReplyDeleteAnd BTW, I spent some quality time yesterday at my Dad's snowy graveside honoring his birthday, his time in America and his service in the US Army during WWII. Oma brought him and the kids to the good old USA back in the 20's. and I told them all how sorry I am for the complete mess we've made of their Dream. Just hope my kids and grand kids can correct the mistakes of Trumputin et al.
ReplyDeleteMr. Henry, to clarify on my "blessings" to DJT: I was trying not to devolve too far into political much and I'm not sure why Jonathan mentioned the president in the first place. But I am no fan of Trumpsky. What you said in your now-deleted comment pretty much spells out what I meant to imply. I was just trying to say it in the politest way I could think of. In other words, I wouldn't normally bestow blessings on such a person (not that blessings are necessarily mine to bestow), but even if just for the sake of the country and the Earth, I hope against hope he gets his toupee out from where it don't shine, or that we can at least avoid more long term damage.

The bible is entirely allegorical symbolism.
ReplyDelete"These things are being taken figuratively (allegorically): The women represent two covenants. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children who are to be slaves: This is Hagar."
-Galations 4:24
Not literal stories of real people. Separating the wheat from the chaff is about separating from negative thoughts and beliefs and focusing on positive thoughts and beliefs. It’s also about being careful who you listen to and believe...
Water baptism...the man holding the pitcher of water...is about the Aquarian Age. The shift from Pisces to Aquarius completes this year/2018.
The Bible is a book of astrology and physiology and there are references all throughout that those with eyes to see and ears to hear will discern.👁

@Unknown - thanks for the thoughtful comment.
ReplyDeleteYes, this biblical interpretation makes sense. And we in no way whatsoever were we attempting to discern hidden meaning from bible passages. As you indicate, allegorical symbolism leads to all sorts of figurative interpretations, much like Neil's music.
Merely applying our motto here @ TW to phrases in the "parlance of our times".
Power to all with eyes to see and ears to hear will discern.👁
