From Noise11by Paul Cashmere on July 8, 2014:
Neil Young debuted a brand new song at his first ever Iceland show on Monday night.
‘Who’s Gonna Stand Up And Save The Earth’ was performed by Neil Young & Crazy Horse at Laugardalsholl in Reykjavik, Iceland. It was the first time Young had ever played in the Nordic country.
Young also included the extremely rare ‘Separate Ways, last played just once in in 2008 and then 35 times in 1993. The song was recorded for the unreleased ‘Homegrown’ album in 1975. The album was shelved for ‘Tonight’s The Night’.
‘Goin’ Home’ from 2002’s ‘Are You Passionate?’ also made the setlist. It was last played in 2003. ‘Days From Used To Be’ was played for the first time since 1991.
The Iceland show was also the first Crazy Horse show of 2014 and first without founding member Billy Talbot who suffered a stroke last month and was forced to withdraw from the band. Longtime Neil Young associate Rick Rosas is the current bass player for Crazy Horse.

Hi again! Thanks Oli! Enjoy the concert. Looking forward to any reports.
I had the pleasure of doing a short interview with Neil today.....and saw them play a couple of songs It was absolutely fantastic!!!
They sounded amazing with Rick Rosas and the two backing vocalists - Neil is in a fantastic form and looks like a teenager on stage......as you know....
And i don´t know if you have seen this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WqELOUAguk
This is me and one of Icelands biggest POPstar (Páll Óskar) doing Heart of gold live on my show in may.....and by doing this we announced the cover/tribute song contest.
This has been a big day for me....because apart from beiing a radio dj/head of music here at the radio in Iceland i´m a Neil Young fan......i´ve seen him 13 times....and even flew to San Fransisco once to attend The Bridgse School benefit concert in 2000. So i´m really happy about everything today.
and here is this short interview i did......not the best i´ve done.....but Neil was great

i guess i'll be the first to say it...this ain't a crazy horse gig.
ReplyDeleteI'm not going to contest this one way or another - but do you consider Greendale a Crazy Horse album?
ReplyDeleteI wish I was there. Look, to me it was never really the same Horse after Danny died. Crazy Horse II was heavier, but not as rich. And now to lose Billy - the heartbeat of the Horse.
ReplyDeleteBut this happens, bands age and guys go down. This is the Horse III and it's the closest Neil can come to the Horse right now. He put off this tour once, I'm glad he's doing it now.
I want to see Neil, maybe one last time, ride the Horse on a mission to go wherever 20 minutes on a song takes him,to abandon reason and embrace his uncommercial, loud, random rock and roll side.
I wish Billy the best. And I wish I was in Iceland.
Will it be the same without Billy? Of course not. Will the band be different? Of course, how could it not? Will they still have the Crazy Horse spirit? We don't know, do we? But I sure as hell intend to find out. I'll be there at Lokeren, and open myself to the moment and the music, and whatever may come.
ReplyDeleteI was bummed to hear of Billy's health and that he had to drop out - but to me, Rick's the best alternative Neil could've gone to, to help save the tour. It's just too bad it'll be my wife's first Crazy Horse gig, and it's looking likely that she'll never get to see the same Horse that knocked me on my ass all those years ago, and that has taken me on such a ride ever since. But I'm sure it'll be the highlight of this summer for me, and I can't *$@#ing wait to get there!
Just updated post w/ Neil video interview from today where he discusses the new band vibe.
ReplyDeleteNeil looks and sounds like he's in a great mood and enjoying the sights of Iceland.
It's obvious this interviewer is pretty nervous (as I would be too) but I wish he had followed up with a question as to how Billy is doing...
ReplyDeleteHe forgot to ask Neil his favorite color......just kidding.
ReplyDeleteNeil looks relaxed and ready to rock. The show must go on, and thankfully it will for this tour. As he said, it's life, and we change.....
ReplyDeleteI'm really looking forward to London. Get well soon Billy, best wishes of course.
It's true that's it's not truly CH without the legend that is Mr Talbot, but it's still a great band who will no doubt make some exciting music. Bass duties are still in capable hands.
It's like a cross between Crazy Horse and The Lost Dogs (Lost Horse, The Crazy Dogs?), which is sure to produce interesting results!
The Flying Scotsman.
Doors open in 5 minutes!! Can't wait to see how this goes down!!
ReplyDeleteam I the only one who noticed the back of Neil's jacket? ;)
ReplyDeleteThat might not be the Horse but close enough! Iceland rules!!
ReplyDeleteMan, that looks like a refreshing set list... Can't wait to hear it!
ReplyDeletegreat setlist ! Goin' Home & Don't Cry No Tears !!!
ReplyDeleteNOW WE NEED - I've Been Waiting For You!!!!
What a great set list !
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy to catch that tour for the last date in colmar with my friend jean mich mich who bought me a ticket (thanks again). Last time Neil played in Colmar, it was a tremendous show, maybe the best of 2008, wich was a fantastic year. Back in 2008, Neil played 2 kinds of shows, divided accoustic and later electric in spring. And more electric for the summer. Rick Rosas was playing the bass and he's damn good. Such a perfect summer night. I wish Billy a better health. Love you Neil, see you in august :-)
Roll on Thursday night!
ReplyDeleteLove all the Ragged Glory material he's breaking out!!
ReplyDeletein the category of weirdness, CSN & Fallon as Y last night singing Iggy Izeal's Fancy:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/07/07/fallon-fancy-crosby-stills-nash-young_n_5565838.html
Goin' Home, Hurricane, the Ragged Glory songs - I've learned a long time ago not to have any presumptions or expectations - but just by adding Thrasher into the acoustic set you'd pretty much have my dream set list for Lokeren...
ReplyDeleteThrasher:
ReplyDeleteCrazy Horse is whoever Neil says is Crazy Horse....
I guess Poncho is no longer the "new guy."
Rick is a wonderful person and bass player. They're very fortunate to have him!
Just received my CSNY 1974...it's in my hands so I know that it REALLY exists!
Should be lots of fun!!!!!
Keep on rockin....

rock on Neil Young and Crazy Horse. great setlist. the show I wish Id seen. wishing Billy well. the doubts are fading fast with the removal of most of the PP songs.
ReplyDeleteReally good to see the setlist has been rejuvenated. The 2012/2013 setlist was fine, but it burnt out.
ReplyDeleteI'd say that Love And Only Love has been played to death, and the set is again perhaps a little bit "top heavy" (with a lot of juggernaut songs early on), but otherwise it looks really good. I hope Goin' Home and Days That Used To Be in particular get a few more outings. Overall this is a very exciting choice of songs.
The somewhat ecletic selection of songs makes me wonder if the setlists are going to vary a bit more from show-to-show than they did last year.
The Flying Scotsman
Great to see an unexpected set list
ReplyDeleteand as the tour progresses perhaps
more surprises are in store. Going
Home and days that used to be are
the type of songs that arent well
known but are great songs.
On another note in my amazon library today was csny 1974. I just finished the ist cd and it sound great. My favorites so far Traces,Johnnys Garden,Carry Me but the prize jewel is On the
Beach. If the First CD is any indication this is going to be a
great set.Noticed it is now ranked number 1 on amazon.
Loads of Zuma and Ragged Glory to savour this weekend in London and Liverpool. CSNY74 on the hi-fi right now. Can life get any better? Bring on the horse!
ReplyDeleteTalk about eclectic - what are we in for this fall? Don't look now but Neil's got a couple seemingly solo shows scheduled 26 days apart at the same venue out east. And a pre sale to occur imminently, ladies and gents.
ReplyDeleteHe's playing Boston on Oct. 5 and 6, not sure where the 26 days comes in: http://tix.concertmaps.com/neilyoung/
ReplyDeleteSo, was anybody there? Any reports?
ReplyDeleteOld Neg?
I wasn't there, but the version of Hurricane on youtube is excellent. Better than it's sounded in years. Very promising.
ReplyDeleteThe versions since 1996 have often misfired or been indulgent "noise-fests". Whereas this one has some really great intense guitar playing on it.
I wish he'd start doing those long instrumentals after the last verse again, though (e.g Weld era). Nowadays the song has a tendancy to fizzle out half-way through.
The Flying Scotsman.
PS....Free World also sounds very good, more good guitar work. And I'm surprised he can still sing that high without going into falsetto.
ReplyDeleteScotsman
Hey hey, this is my first comment on TW, but I'm a regular reader.
ReplyDeleteI was there in Reykjavik, so this seems like a good time to break my silence. I travelled from the UK to go and see it.
It was a good gig. I've seen NY seven times, and I'd place this performance at number three, below the Fleadh in London (2001) and Glastonbury (2009), but above his last show in London with the Horse (2013) (where Neil admitted that 'frankly, we kinda sucked at times tonight). They didn't suck at all on Monday. They took a great big bow at the end of the show, and looked like they'd had a great time.
It was a great venue to see him in - the most intimate venue you could hope to see the Horse play. (Thanks to ATP for that - that is their touch, I'm sure). That, and the fact that it was his first gig in Iceland, made it special.
Billy's absence was notable (get well soon Billy). Rick has a different aura about him, playing the bass so very calmly. It changes the interplay between them. But he fits into the Billy-shaped hole like no-one else could, in my humble opinion.
The excitement built throughout the night. The crowd were loudly appreciative at the start, and mad for it by the end of the show. We wanted more (damn you, house lights).
We chatted to the receptionist at our hotel afterwards (an Icelander who'd seen Bowie and Zappa in the 70s) who said he thought it was a really special gig. But not many young folks in the crowd. We agreed.
Hearing some of the rare songs was a real treat. It was a buzz to realise, after a few bars, that we were going to hear Going Home again. And I'm not sure if I've ever heard him play "Only Love..". It was a great version - the high notes were handled.
As with the last tour, Neil's acoustic session was outstanding.
The set list has been nicely mixed up since the last tour, though the format of Horse - acoustic - Horse is clearly still there. My companion and I came away with a renewed realisation of just how many great songs Neil has to draw on.
Hope you all enjoy this tour, wherever you may see it.
