Auckland, New Zealand - Neil Young & Crazy Horse Concert Reviews - Mar 21, 2013

From The 13th Floor by Marty Duda:
As far as I can remember, I’ve seen Neil Young at least a dozen times.

He remains as vibrant and vital now as he was when I first saw him with CSNY in 1974. If this is my last chance to hear him play live, then I have no complaints…this is rock and roll that hits all the senses and lingers long after the final chords have died down. Long Live Neil Young. And long live Crazy Horse.

Rock and roll will never die.

  1. Brilliant show from the opening tones of love and only love to the last ringing feedback of roll another number. Different setlist to most australian shows and Neil dragged out some lesser played tunes of late - surfer joe and moe the sleaze, mr soul, dangerbird. All 3 songs highlights in themselves, but really part of a sustained plateau that didn't relent for 3 hours! Such great energy from Neil and The Horse - Thank You and Forza Neil!

  2. Just got back from 3 hours of mind blowing magic. Setlists I am not good at, but we had Danger Bird :)

Neil and the band were on top form... and everyone where I stood was having a great time, singing along where needed, and showing their appreciation where appropriate.....

It rates as one of the best concerts I have been too.... 3 hours, I wish it was 4.

  3. Two and three quarter hours! Loud, on the edge, could have fallen off at any moment. Many many highlights. I think my top three would be Danger Bird, Ramada Inn and Roll another Number, especially the solo. Oh, and Mr Soul. And Cinnamon Girl. Walk Like A Giant rocked and the ending ruled, however long that went for. Surfer Joe and Moe The Sleaze was an awesome surprise, looks like it hadn't been played in about about 22 years. They were all clearly enjoying themselves on stage. Can I go again? Now?

  4. So hopefully the fall shows back in the States will be announced soon?! Sweet Jesus this is getting good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. If they bring this 3 hour extravaganza back to the states, I will be eternally grateful. It seems the first leg of the tour was merely a warm-up in comparison to these epic performances they've been putting on in Australia.

  9. I was fortunate enough to have been at the MSG, NY show and I was truly blown away. Reading all these posts, I am very happy for all these fans and still very jealous :) The set lists are just killer, Surfer Joe!!!!

  10. Holy f#!k !!! I told my girlfriend that when we saw NY & CH in Austin TX last October for the ACL Music Fest we got ripped off !!! That was merely a rehearsal compared with some of these down under epic shows... I have heard a few on Rust Radio and a good friend (you know who you are) gifted me with 2-CDs of great-sounding boots of Perth, Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane and these guys are just ON FIRE !!! Totally in synch lock-step like psychic... Talk about "The Spook" !!! I am praying they come back to The States !!!

    PEACE & LOVE

  11. I never understand why people hold up their phones to record Cinnamon Girl or whatever, since there are millions of versions on Youtube already. But Surfer Joe and Moe the Sleeze? Please, please, please!

  12. If he adds another fall leg in the USA I will be very surprised...then again I was surprised when he brought the Le Noise show to Richmond, VA in 2011...

  13. Surfer Joe? Awesome! Great to hear re.ac.tor getting some well-deserved love. I wonder how the crowd will react when an extended "t-bone" gets its turn?

Personally still hoping to see "Goin' Home" from "Are You Passionate?" get a run - can barely imagine how good those drums would sound with Ralph on fire the way he is at the moment.

  14. Great to read Dangerbird got another run.
I'm hoping there will be some shows in Hawaii or NYC in early October,as I'm heading over from Melbourne.

    There's always Europe though folks.
That's what money is for right?? :-D

  15. I wonder if Neil has been watching any of The Drones (best band in Australia ... simply amazing to have the two paired) and been at all inspired by them ... a challenge to take it up even another notch. The longer shows and different songs seem to have happened once the Drones joined the tour. Or maybe the first few shows were just the Horse warming up and Neil doesn't even know who the support bands are ...

  16. @Alfonz - He definitely knows who The Drones are. They were originally only booked for one show in Australia, but then he liked them so much he asked them to support at the remaining shows in Aus/NZ.

I was with The Drones in Wellington when Neil came out of his dressing room after their set to personally thank them.

  19. (There's a hole in the sky)

There's a hole in the sky

(There's a hole in the sky)

    Don't forget it now

(There's a hole in the sky)

Hey pretty baby won't you take a ride with me
    (I love the sun)

Make my engine run, be my destiny
    (I love the sun)

Be my power, charge my battery.
    (I love the sun)

(There is a hole in the sky)
There is a hole in the sky
(There is a hole in the sky)
    Don't forget it now
(There is a hole in the sky)

Keep on working on the poisoned pipeline
    (I love the sun)
Rake that money in and cross the border line
    (I love the sun)
Keep on working you're running out of time
    (I love the sun)

(There's a hole in the sky)
    Don't forget it now
(There's a hole in the sky)
    Don't forget it now
(There's a hole in the sky)

I'll never burn again that dying energy
    (I love the sun)
'cause when I touch the sun it makes me free
    (I love the sun)
I close the circle and fulfill my destiny
    (I love the sun)

    I love the sun
    I love the sun

(There's a hole in the sky)

    Don't you forget it now
    Don't forget it now

(There is a hole in the sky)
    Don't forget it now
    (There's hole in the sky)
