Here's the new video for "Clementine" by Neil Young & Crazy Horse from the upcoming Americana .

Clementine
This American folk ballad is believed to be based on “Down By The River Liv’d a Maiden” by H.S. Thompson 1863. However, it is usually credited to Percy Montrose, 1884 or Barker Bradford from about the same period. The Americana arrangement extends the folk process, using many of the original words and a new melody. The song tells the story of either a bereaved lover recalling his lost sweetheart, or a father missing his lost daughter. In both cases the daughter has drowned in an accident. The song is now famous as an American children’s song. The verse about Clementine’s sister has been omitted from most children’s versions. This verse has different meanings depending on whether the point of view of the singer is taken as the lover or the father.

Note that the video is marked as "REJECTED" at the end. However, in order to avoid another Treasure debacle, we made sure that Archives Guy has Ok'd this.
The archival footage seems to come from a slower, simpler time in Americana when families participated in fun activities and daring pastimes.

Yeah, That first video had quite an edge to it. I can see why it didn't make the cut. I agree with the children's choir. I was one of those who expressed my doubts, however wrong I was.

ReplyDeleteMan, I had to actually stop watching the knife throwing mamma. and I typically don't get offended by much, but, wow, those knives had to be sharp enough to... that video makes your typical snoop dog video seem pretty harmless. I'm liking the mix on these songs - the bass is very strong. Interesting to hear (feel) the difference between rick the bass player and Billy - both great - but different styles.

It seems odd that this new record (which is shaping up to be brilliant it seems) isn't being released in this format, along with the usual CD and vinyl releases, since we are almost half way through 2012 already.
Not a criticism, just a thought really!
He is releasing it on Bluray, which he says gives you 100% of the audio from the recordings, compared with far less on CD and even less with .mp3.

ReplyDeleteThrasher, that's definitely not a piece of art by Shepard Fairey. As far as I can see credits should go to Gary Burden from R.Twerk & Co. And it even looks to me he did use Quarkxpress to make it.... but that's a technical detail.

ReplyDeleteGlad to see some rational consideration of the music. I am a huge NY fan and feel his best material has been delivered with the horse. I also though listen to a huge variation in music and don't just listen to Neil and related items. Consideration of the music thus far is I must be honest and say it sounds dreadful. It is not derogatory to say this sounds like a weak pub (bar) band. There are some great bands doing great music and making great albums. This though needs to be considered as weak, if we take a rationale, non biased perspective.
ReplyDelete@ T, Strange things are happening but stranger things have happened in the world of Neil... Looks like Gary Burden made a cover for every song using a video still from the little movie that comes with each song.
ReplyDeleteIt can be interesting if they use the Shepard Fairey paintings as backdrops on stage. I just remembered that I met him once while he was working on a giant (Obey Giant) mural. Very impressive.

Well, we all have our own point of view, but personally I don`t see the point of trying to compare Neil with other artists, he`s never tried to appeal to a mainstream audience and has always followed what he needs to do for his own musical satisfaction. As an album of traditional folk songs reinterpreted in the Crazy Horse style it is what it is, and I think it`s a bold move by Neil which really works.

I`m really excited by what I`ve heard so far, but then I admit it, I am biased!

Seriously, as a NY&CH fan, I'm getting anxious to hear the rest of the songs. Sure, there's similarities in Neil's songs, but
I always like to listen to his less praised songs anyway. It's like drinking the juice after the pickles are gone.

I have been very disappointed with Neil's releases lately, including Prairie Wind, ChromeDreamsII and RoadRock. But these songs utterly captivate me. I like each one more than the last. They are quite inventive, even though covers. He's mining a vein here that I really like. The sound is a primitive grace which very well suits old American folk songs. Neil's voice sounds wonderfully appropriate to the tunes. A breath of fresh air.
ReplyDeleteI meant to say Fork in the Road above- a truly horrendous album except for the cool and quirky Cough Up the Bucks and the orphaned Get Around- but now that I think about it, Road Rock was disappointing as well.

Ya know I have to say that my reaction to 'Clementine' is about the same as Matthew's was to 'Jesus' Chariot'! I won't attempt to recreate his or my excitement here. But I will say that no one - absolutely no one - has ever made a D Major chord mean so much. Of course Neil has been doing that for decades - making the simplest chord changes sound brand new & heavenly within countless songs. But on 'Clementine', when the band shifts up to that D Major chord, it sounds like the Earth just exploded out of my shit computer speakers. I cannot wait for the high resolution audio to rock my basement to its foundation!

These backing vocals, the Horse and the children's choir, are MUUUUUUCH better than the ones we've been getting in recent years.It makes a huge difference to his sound and the enjoyment of it. Sweet relief.;)

ReplyDeleteShame Neil didn't consider 'Red River Valley.' Could have been a Grapes Of Wrath connection but the album will be fine the way it is.
