Another most awesome Photo of the Moment of Joni Mitchell with CSNY in 1974.
From the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young concert at Wembley Stadium, London, England, 1974-09-14.
We've had Joni on our mind here recently with an earlier Photo of the Moment: Joni Mitchell and Neil Young.
"Sweet Joni
From Saskatoon
Here's a ring for your finger
Burns like the sun
Shines like the moon..."
As BIGCHIEF commented:
Although she was always an attractive lady, there must be something especially unique about her soul that draws men to her such as Graham Nash who even just recently mentioned in an interview how after all of these years he has deep regrets over losing the love of this woman.
Although he didn't put any demands on her, she's such an independent woman / artist that there is no way she was going to put her career on hold to play the traditional role of mother / housewife.
Talk about following her muse.
She certainly made a lot of choices along the path of her life in which the 'muse' took precedent over choices which would have drastically altered the course of the life and art of Joni as we have come to know her.
Well put BC.
More on the musical intersections and influences of Joni Mitchell and Neil Young.

ReplyDeleteWhere to start with Joni? I guess here, maybe my favorite song/performance by her, but of course it's an impossible thing to say:

It's hard to know anyone on a personal level, let alone Joni, who we only get a glimpse of through her art. But what a glimpse. I imagine that if we broke down Neil and Joni side by side, we'd be hard pressed to come up with much of a difference, save volume of work maybe. Well, Joni probably isn't as goofy as Neil. But for shear immediacy of passion for the moment, unvarnished truths, and raw emotion, well, I just know the impact she and Neil have had on me. The Last Time I Saw Richard always had a profound effect on me, but even just recently has served to offer me the insight I needed to propel my life forward again. Let's just say that I'm trying to be more like Richard these days. Anyways, besides being so beautiful, I imagine her artistic sensibility and mammoth talent was both an attraction and a repellant for any number of men. It must have been hard to navigate it all. I have no idea how it all worked out, except for snippets of interviews, but I think her faithfulness to the muse surely defined her choices. As I say, it's hard to know anyone on a personal level, I just hope she has come out the other side as well as Neil seems to have.

A couple of years ago, my partenr and I attended the Fiddle & Drum Ballet performed by the Alberta Ballet at the Banff Centre for Performing Arts. This was the second show we had seen of this ballet, but this version had a few more songs personally added by Joan. Well, we all know Joan chain smokes and at intermission we went outside for some air, and there was my partner in a very small circle of folks, with Joan holding court and, of course, smoking. I sttod back, not wanting to 'invade' the scene, since my partner and I have been long time admirers of her art. A few moments passed ansd I was asked to join in, and when I met Joan, I completely understood how Graham must have felt that night in the Chateau Luurier in Ottawa when they locked souls. Amazing woman, down to earth, and has a great sense of humour. Neil and Joan make all Canadians proud of them, always.

Thank you for posting this - this was the concert my wife and I attended after our marriage the week before - I guess it was our honeymoon?
I still love her (and Neil and Joni) but she only ever loved Joni (and I guess me - 37 years and counting)
