Here is a Comment of the Moment on Neil Young's Archives Vol. III, which went on pre-order last week.
From Neil Young Archives Vol. III - 17 CD BOX SET - Pre-Order by Dan (who references the NYA promo video which is embedded on linked post):
Just preordered Archive III from the Greedy Hand. 17 CD / 5 BluRay for $476.98 ( this includes tax ), which comes out to $21.68 per disc. It’s limited to 5,000 units and goes on sale tomorrow. So I got the chance to buy it a day early. I assume anyone who is a subscriber will receive the same email I just got. Looks amazing, but definitely not cheap. Release date is September 5th 2024.
What a great video promo!!!
It provides a lot of insight into the contents of this box set. And I completely agree with Old Black, as I too feel truly fortunate to have the means to purchase this set. I had to raid my savings a bit, but at least I had it to raid. I’m grateful that Neil has offered the CD set separately for those who only need the music, and of course I would imagine most of the films will eventually be available on NYA.
I’m a physical media person due to of my age, as the tactical experience has always been important. But I understand that most folks today are happy with the streaming options. Fortunately Neil has provided that as well. As a vinyl junky I simply had to order the 2lp set as well. If nothing else; Neil Young can be an expensive addiction, but the side effects are incredibly satisfying.
Peace🙏
Thanks Dan. Yes, the NYA promo video is a real treat. can't image having to edit that down to 90 seconds from 217 hours of material.

- WHAT IS NEIL YOUNG GOING TO PUT IN NEIL YOUNG ARCHIVES VOL. 4? | NYU
As a vinyl junkie I pulled the trigger on the vinyl. That will satisfy the need to have something on the shelf, as well. I will cherry pick some hi res & If a separately sold, leather bound book should become available (as was the case fer Ark2), I’ll snag that as well. But I can’t justify the cost for cd. (Where is that cd player, anyway? No longer in my cars or desktops) I also have all of the Available bluray video versions (sans the 2 previously unreleased). They will fer sure be on movietone & I am betting stand alone as well. I understand the “Free” hi res. d/l’s. But “Free” ain’t always. I don’t believe the XStream store was available when vol 1 was released. I liked buying the bluray audio and then “rolling my own”. Using my bluray burner/player and extraction software I was able to process hi res 24 /192 and chuck the included b/s mp3 d/l card. I incurred the expenses expecting to do the same w/ ensuing volumes. Luckily, other artists have released bluray audio discs so all was not lost. It’s a hobby. A full circle hobby. I’m happy Neil is cranking output @ a seemingly break neck pace and I’m equally happy for all who are happy with their purchase, no matter the format. Availability is key. Different strokes, folks.
ReplyDeleteThanks HW.We haven't pulled the trigger yet.
ReplyDeleteKind of a short fuse on the pre-order.
Like you say: different strokes
but which one's?
like your spirit here of roll your own. a mighty undertaking, for sure.
kind of amazed that we're still alive for NYA3?! Many of us were thinking we wouldn't ever see even NYA #1. And then the almost 10 year gap for #2. Now a few years later Vol #3?
Heck we might even live to see #4 and #5 at this rate.
thank you Archives Team!
sacré bleu!
According to the info card on NYA (found via "Bright Sunny Day"), track 3 on the Takes set is "Hitchhiker" from that album.
ReplyDeleteI’m still avoiding the contents of this monster, but I did listen to Bright Sunny Day. Nice simple song with a positive message, but I understand why it wasn’t released originally. But glad to have it now, as it definitely captures the times beautifully.
ReplyDeletePeace to all 🙏
The promo video is great. I have watched it half a dozen times at least and the last scene makes me laugh out loud every time!
ReplyDeleteWonder how Neil would react now if asked the same question...
Trying to get my head around the scale and scope of the content - so much to look forward to.
Just need to find a couple of months somewhere to listen to and watch it all!
It's good all the info is available to prospective buyers but I understand avoiding spoilers. Personally, a track list only tells me so much. A lot of the fun and enjoyment lies in discovering the unreleased songs and alternate versions. I'm especially looking forward to Johnny's Island and the mid-'80s live Horse cuts.
ReplyDeleteI think what a lot of people are missing is that many of these versions are the very first take of the song, not the same as the released version.
ReplyDeleteThis has turned into a very expensive month for me. I had just purchased the deluxe edition for NY, and then Grateful Dead announced this year’s box set from 78’. And then there’s the Bob Dylan &The Band 74’ tour box set. I need a break from all these expensive box sets, or maybe I just need therapy.🤯
ReplyDeletePeace 🙏
@ wardo - thanks, good to know
ReplyDelete@ Ron - yep, pretty hilarious. we have the full interview of the last clip somewhere on VHS. been awhile. Need to figure out time to absorb it all also.
Recall back when NYA #1 came out, getting the BluRay, new stereo & video system. Hooking up,making work, navigating the controller. It was practically months just to get the whole effort going much less listen and watch.
1st world problem, definitely.
@ Meta Rocker - quite a few like "diamonds in the dew" to enjoy coming our way.
@ AB - good point. we do see some griping about folks already have most everything. Just like w/ Early Daze. Everyone had all the songs already, sure. But different versions are something that the deep fans are always after.
we know this...
@ Dan - TW: an emotional support group for Neil Young fans. we're always here. :)
Dan, I can relate to some extent. I’m thinking of waiting for the price to drop on the new Lennon Mind Games CD/blu-ray. Then the NYA3 announcement shows up. I’m also, for the first time in life, having a noticeable hearing problem, which is a potential obstacle for music. Maybe allergies, months of being near roaring loud AC units, or the tiny “earbuds” so ubiquitous today. When I first got earbuds (with an i-pod!) I was not sure they would even stay in my ears.
ReplyDeleteI like wireless because it avoids tangling, fraying, etc., but small objects (or anything) in your ear is not ideal, especially if you listen a lot on the daily. I’m more comfortable with a proper headset.
@Andrew, true! Some folks don’t enjoy alt takes. For the curious and attentive listener, they can be just as revealing as an unknown song. What’s clear is that each take, to some degree, is ephemeral. Live music is often better because of this spontaneity… it would be an exaggeration to say a song gets reinvented every time it’s played, but new discoveries are always possible. Impermanence is a flip side of creative vitality.
ReplyDeleteI’m sure that’s not doing anything to counteract my reputation, in some quarters, for excessively inflated pontification. To paraphrase my late father, I’d rather be a smart-ass than a jackass.
@Meta : The John Lennon Mind Games box set is amazing, but in order to truly enjoy it you will need a UV light. The sound quality is absolutely incredible. Sean has given Mind Games a new life, as the original mix was fairly muddy. I know you will enjoy it when you eventually pick it up. Definitely worth the investment.
ReplyDeletePeace🙏
@Dan, Mind Games is one of my go-to albums when I’m feeling a little down, especially Intuition, One Day at a Time, Freda People, I Know…. The album is by turns contemplative, fiery, goofy, and heartfelt. Needless to say, I look forward to the new incarnation.
ReplyDeleteFrom the Imagine and POB box sets, Sean Ono Lennon has put together a unique approach (as far as I know), where the outtakes and variations are a virtual deconstruction of a recording process. The Beatles were pioneers of overdubs and multi-tracking, building up the final version layer by layer. So if you want to know it was done, it makes sense to “reverse engineer”—in other words, take something apart to see how it works. The Beatles Anthology CDs, from 30-odd years ago, took baby steps in this direction, though the result sometimes came across as Frankenstein-ish. The album box sets are more expensive but have the space (and technology) to do it more effectively.
The new re-mix of the album takes all those components and re-constructs them. A good remix isn’t drawing a mustache on Mona Lisa. It’s more like art restoration. I don’t have much technical knowledge, but materials deteriorate with time and experts sometimes make educated deductions about the work’s original look (obviously none of us were around during the time of Leonardo or Caravaggio).
Got a copy of Tracks CD in the mail yesterday. Was sort of surprised it has come out over a month before the full box set comes. Anyway, a very nice taster indeed. The span of styles on this one disc nicely encapsulates the chameleon-like nature of Neil. Very nice to have an official release of the scorching Hey, Hey, My, My version with Devo, which I've always considered about the only redeeming value of the Human Highway movie. And Sail Away with the Ducks is great. Razor Love from Landing on Water era, otoh, makes you appreciate the later released version from Silver & Gold all that much more, and I say that as someone who actually likes LOW. Very much looking forward to the full box set next month.
ReplyDeleteNomad’s description of the Tracks disc sounds a lot like Lucky 13… RNS through El Dorado represents a fascinating Neil period.
ReplyDeleteI’ve got to watch Human Highway very soon. On Neil’s film experiments, I liked Paradox and have watched JTTP several times over the years. The latter is more Americana than the actual Americana album (I’m now imagining the title song from Hawks & Doves playing over the “King of Kings” scene with the black-robed horsemen on the shore). Incidentally, the strongest thing I’ve consumed while watching these is wine.
Clearly, I have a high tolerance for the offbeat. I’ll take “artsy-fartsy” or whatever label people use. I’m sure there’s popular stuff people would think I’m missing out on. If it doesn’t click with me, I walk on. Though it should go without saying, a different opinion isn’t a personal slight. I may be an opinionated windbag, but my tastes aren’t inherently superior to someone else’s.
Just finished my first listen to the Volume III Takes CD, and boy am I excited to hear the entire set in September. I kept attempting to decide what the highlights were, but everything here is a highlight.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the Hey Hey, My My (into the black) with Devo. It’s a unique take that’s very different from what’s in the movie. And Neil is really going for it on guitar. This is definitely a really cool performance. I’m hoping that the new BluRay for the film Human Highway will include the complete Devo scene that was dramatically shortened for the previous release. If not; this performance will suffice. It’s definitely an addition that not everyone will appreciate. Completely out of left field, which is why I think it’s so important.
Sail Away with the Ducks is a really wonderful version. It just captures the essence of the song perfectly. Thrasher from the Boarding House is simply amazing. Right up there with the original. Razor Love is a truly remarkable version, and will most likely be a favorite for many. Last of His Kind is a wonderful way to finish off a disc filled with so many surprises. What a fantastic addition to the Neil Young catalog. Simply brilliant from beginning to end.
To be honest, I love everything included here. The sound quality varies dramatically from track to track, but in no way does this inhibit the enjoyment of these brilliant songs. These are recordings that were passed over for whatever reason, and now have finally found their place in the canon.
These performances are so unique, it’s hard to imagine what awaits us in September. I can’t wait to dive into the complete box set, as I can only imagine how many hours of enjoyment and discovery it will contain.
Peace🙏
Interesting, MR, to think of Lucky 13, but actually this is a much better compilation. I guess that's because it spans a much wider time frame.
ReplyDeleteDan, really, you liked Razor Love with the drum machine? Can't say it did it for me. But, I agree this portends a great box set to come. This morning I was out on a bike ride, and I thought, maybe I should try to spread out my listening experience of the box set when it comes. 1 new disc per month. That means I'll be exploring something fresh each month for nearly 2 years. Whether I have that sort of discipline remains to be seen....
Is this version the earliest known recording of Razor Love? I dimly remember some uncertainty about how old that song is. Intuitively, it seems like a better fit for Old Ways/Harvesters than Landing On Water, but maybe that's because I'm familiar with the Silver & Gold recording.
ReplyDelete
