This gig apparently does not include Crazy Horse, unlike the previously announced  New Orleans Jazz Fest 2024, which includes Crazy Horse on the bill.

Neil's response: "Crazy Horse or POTR".

so. Promise of The Horse? Crazy REAL? Some amalgamation/tbd?

  1. To me, this indicates that the initial Crazy Horse tour in April/May could extend into a leg 2 in the September time frame.

Remember that Farm Aid is that weekend and Neil typically plays at least 1 warm up gig for Farm Aid. It seems that Louisville is likely that gig.

Last year Neil didn’t play Farm Aid with POTR because they had a conflict and were not playing Farm Aid that year.

So if Neil is saying the Horse or POTR, it indicates that Horse is playing it by ear and may or may not do a leg 2 this year. If they don’t want to continue that dates past April - May (maybe even June), then it’ll be with POTR.

Also indicates that Neil could play Farm Aid with the Horse this year, if they are already out on the road, otherwise likely will be with POTR.

  2. good points Doug.

the idea that neil might tour w/ 2 bands in 24 seems hard to fathom. Not saying impossible, but just seems like it makes it more difficult.

small correction on POTR & Farm Aid. Lukas & POTR did play FA last year.

Neil performed solo presumably b/c he opened for Dylan. neil cut his set short to accommodate Bob as Special Guest. So he probably figured why bother w/ a band? just go solo, play a few songs and get to Bob.

  3. I did not know that on Lukas & POTR.

Thanks for clarifying and for the context on Dylan!

  4. But didn't aleady allude to April being with CH, when he posted that note about Toronto? post on NYA 1-23-2024. Fall may just be KY & Farm Aid, but he also alluded to Canada shows, and those will not likely be in April.

  5. I wouldn’t venture to read the tea leaves. The sad aspect is that NY has more limited choices on who to play with these days, as many old friends are no longer with us. I imagine the working relationship with POTR cam partly out of this need—not just desire—for new blood.

To me, Barn and World Record sounded very much like a Horse/POTR hybrid. My only prognostication is that each new incarnation will build on the last, while simultaneously bringing fresh things. I don’t think one particular endpoint is preordained. Thesis+antithesis=synthesis, which then becomes the new thesis, etc. Call it the Phenomenology of Neil Young. Alternatively, it’s the Promise with No Name.

  6. This latest name version of Neil Young's backing band will make its way into my Imaginery Rock Band Hall of Fame: Thinking about "Promise With No Name" is transporting more contexts than I can think of right now. Take this, Dylanologists... and thanks, Meta Rocker.

  7. @ Thrasher : How long have you been on Twitter / X? I quit it when Musk bought it & made some changes.

We are all still waiting for word of the tour. What will it be? Who will it be?

I’ve got my ear to the rail listening for that distant train.

  8. @ Meta Rocker - to echo Dionys here on transporting context...

  9. @ Our Brother Alan in Seattle - according to our profile, joined X/TWTR in 2008. so heading towards 20 years.

actually we had suspended posting on Twitter for awhile because the hashtags had gotten so badly out of hand.

but once Musk terminated most staff and removed the bulk of the malicious code, we found that our X/TWTR TW feed cleaned up enormously.

as for tour news, the NY fans have spoken and voted, stood and been counted:

Which band for Neil Young's "LOVE EARTH" 2024 Tour?

    Crazy Horse - 81.3%
    Promise of the REAL- 18.7%

  10. Glad my spontaneous conception of the “Promise with No Name” carries some resonance. Some of us on TW have occasionally been accused of pseudo-intellectualism. My view is that if something I write precipitates genuine reflection from a reader, the thoughts hold some kind of value.
