From Inside Neil Young's 'Before And After': Where All 13 Songs Came From | Grammy News by Morgan Enos:

The folk-rock titan's newest LP is a journey through the past — whether recent or decades in the rearview. But 'Before And After' is far more interesting than just an album of re-recordings.

More than his fragile tenor, knife-twisting pump organ, swarming Old Black guitar, or any other aural hallmark, Neil Young is defined by his dogged, locomotive-like (and somewhat wackadoo) resolve to surge forward. Come hell or high water, Young will continue the mission.

Which doesn't mean innovate, necessarily — even though innumerable contemporary indie and Americana artists owe their livelihoods to him. It's just that the fire he ignited in 1966, when he wrote his first song as a Buffalo Springfielder, remains furiously burning in 2023.

"I don't care. I figured that's why they like it, because I don't care. It's what I have to do. I want to do this," the two-time GRAMMY winner and 28-time nominee told a tickled Zane Lowe last year, while promoting his latest album with Crazy Horse, World Record. "That's why there's 51, 52 albums: because I want to do this, and I can still feel it. I'd be crazy to stop."

All of a year after World Record, Young is back with a new album, Before and After. (Would that be his 53rd? His recent cavalcade of archival releases renders the number hopelessly blurry.)

Some more reviews via Rusted Moon:

Dave Simpson, The Guardian: "Songs like 'When I Hold You in My Arms' exude a beautiful intimacy and openness, and while his voice has lost some of the old, youthful power, it has tenderness, nuance, humanity and warmth won." 4 out of 5

Killian Laher, No More Workhorse: "Perhaps the most successful is the dark rendition of When I Hold You In My Arms, with a great electric guitar solo in the middle of the song. A dark organ drives Mother Earth and Mr Soul, while later a friendly strum through Comes A Time stands out due to the strong songwriting. Most of us will give this album a few polite listens before placing it on the creaky Neil Young shelf."

Jörg Feyer, Rolling Stone: "It's touching how a very old Neil Young still believes that he has to defend cultural techniques of the 20th century against modernity. Now that technology has changed culture itself, when songs die a second, they don't die with it the hook falls into the house. Against shuffle arbitrariness and machine playlists, he literally sets an album in one piece. “Before And After” lets 13 tracks flow into one another, as a 48-minute distillation of his solo sets in the summer of 2023. Guitar, voice , harp, harmonium, piano." 3 out of 5

Albert Koch, Musikexpress: "The fact that Neil Young can always find new aspects in classics like "Mr. Soul" and "Mother Earth" in sometimes tender versions is the real message of the album. The 13 pieces flow seamlessly into one another, the tracklist follows "There's no chronology. At the beginning of "Comes A Time," Neil Young's voice breaks slightly, but once it composes itself, it's like it's still 1978." 5 out of 6

  1. Damn, that's cool. Anyone able to grab an extra one (through a friend or family member)? Happy to pay you for your time if you can ship one to Canada.

  2. Wish Neil could make a visit just a couple hours more north :(

  3. Dang, wish it was Pescardero, I'd be there. I don't know if Neil comes up this way much these days. Atascadero is pretty nice, though.

C'mon up here, Neil, and sign some albums. I'm thinking Streetlight Records, downtown Santa Cruz, a stone's throw from the Catalyst. See ya there??

  5. 6:41 AM Pacific time - Morro Bay. Just returned from Traffic Records a little earlier than expected and empty handed, here is the first report for the day.

Traffic Records are set to open at 7:00 AM to start selling Neil's new album and provide what is rumored to be 300 wrist bands in numerical order for later in the day between 12:00 and 3:00 PM when Mr. Young will sign your purchase.

I set out from Morro Bay this morning at 5:30 AM thinking that by being at Traffic Records by 6:00 AM there might be a couple of early birds braving 35%F chills to form a line but nothing out of the ordinary. We are not talking "Swifties" after all. Arriving at Traffic records I was meet by a line already two blocks long and possibly a 100 folks already, some look like they have been there all night. My first thought is cool this is how it used to be buying concert tickets back in the day which was always fun so I set about looking for parking. For some reason the city have posted no parking signs all around the area for 12/8 between 7 and 11 AM. That meant you needed to park a fair ways away and the line was swelling before my eyes.

Sadly I had to decide I did not have the time to find parking and then line up for hours get a wrist band and then come back later in the day and line up some more. It was unclear if once you got a wrist band you then had to go in another line immediately and then wait till noon later in the day, though I would expect with numbered wrist bands you can leave and come back later.

Anyway unfortunately for me I had to bow out and return home, work intrudes again. Even at 6:00 AM there was quite a buzz around the place I expect it to be quite a day over their in Atascadero.

Hopefully someone there who braves the cold and time for a great meeting with Mr. Young later today will report their experience here.

    Signing out from Morro Bay.

    Kevin D.

  6. @ Kevin D - whoah. rusties = swifties?! yikes.

man, now that's a report. sorry not working out. not an unsurprising report in neil world.

hopefully we're able to hear some successes later in the day.

or are many of these folks the equivalent of ticket scalpers??

  7. @thrasher - scalpers crossed my mind also - it will be interesting to see how much signed B&A content suddenly appears on eBay. Hopefully not too much as that kind of activity has ruined Record Store Day over the years, IMHO.

  8. I collect autographs and have never sold any. I saw in a group on Facebook last night that someone was offering to get signed copies for individuals for $1000. What these individuals do is they hire people to stand in line for $100 bucks and they pocket the other $900. Doesn't go through eBay, goes directly to someone desperate to get a copy and willing to pay $1000. I tried to email the record store with screenshots, but they didn't answer.

  9. @ Jaimie - thanks for posting this.

Please provide any additional details. This type of behavior must be rooted out. Much like scalpers and bootleggers.

Folks - get photos of these folks. Confront them. Challenge them.

To be clear here: Not suggesting violence or doxxing. Rusties are way above that.

But shame them back into their slimey holes where they deserve to belong forever.

  10. I doubt there were many scalpers or their minions in line, but that may or may not be.

I have always felt that if you must pay for an autograph, it’s worthless. I have a nice little collection and they mean a lot to ME.

But then I am a lucky bastard who scored one on a photograph back in 1996 thru a teacher of mine who was also a parent of a Bridge School student, & friends with Peggy. I understand not everyone can make it happen.

3/5 stars? I can already tell you this is a 5/5 star album because the tour was smoking hot, heartfelt, and strong. Much like Johnny Cash and his last 5 studio albums on American records, Neil may be saving some of the best for last.

More likely he shoots from the hip and somehow hits the bullseye 10/10 x

I like the review that mentions his ever-enlarging album catalog, innumerable indeed (although many of you can precisely count them. I don’t bother keeping count. For me, more Neil is better. Santa is bringing me my 3rd “new” live 1971 album, released officially in the last few years (Dorothy Chandler Pavillion). My Dad was a professor at UCLA so I wanted a physical copy; for $8 it’s worth the price, despite my lifetime membership to NYA (paying 1 year at a time). Someday I may be forced to choose between eating 3 meals a day or remaining a member of NYA, but for now it’s a sure thing. I don’t need to own every video. Right now I am buying albums on CD which I already own on Blu ray (like Tom Petty’s Hypnotic Eye and Soundgarden live from Artist’s Den.

Peace be upon you. Your Brother Alan in Seattle

  11. Kevin D: If I had been there I would have given you mine. It stinks that the person willingly spreading the news gets left out in the cold. NY if you’re lurking here, send Kevin D a signed copy & send me the bill.

  12. @ John K - a very noble gesture, sir. Thanks.

Yes, if anyone can help Kevin out with this situation we would all be immensely grateful.

    ReplyDelete
  13. @johnKwit - Thanks for the thought but Neil owes me nothing. It was my choice not to line up and I hope most folks who did line up were legit fans and were rewarded for their patience. Of course if something came in the mail I would not say no!

    Kevin D. in Morro Bay.

P.S. - Great picture of Neil and Daryl.
