Here's a rare photo of an early performance of the Stills-Young Band at Pauley Pavilion, UCLA on 11/23/75.
The Stills-Young Band consisted of Joe Lala, Ronald Ziegler, Jerry Aiello, George Perry & Donnie Dacus. This performance also included Flo & Eddie (Howard Kaylan & Mark Volman) formerly with Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention and The Turtles.

Incidentally, happy birthday Stephen Stills, who had a birthday yesterday (January 3, 1945). Stills's career has 35MM in sales. His 1st solo LP, 'Stephen Stills' went gold & features both Jimi Hendrix & Eric Clapton.

Just gotta have the tunes! Manassas was a great, but short lived vibe.

I was lucky enough to see Manassas play live at the Portland Colosseum. They opened with a energetic electric set that was absolutely stunning and then took a rather long break. Then Stephen came out to do a solo acoustic set, but he was obviously so waisted he could barley walk and then proceeded to make a complete fool of himself. After several unsuccessful attempts at completing an entire song, he was unceremoniously booed off the stage. It was a sad night to be sure.

Caught the opening of the '72 tour of Manassas that I think was three hours of music with a half hour break after the first set. At 10:30 p.m. the house lights went up due to a curfew because of neighborhood noise complaints when Joe Walsh and Barnstorm played the venue. There was a fine of thousands of dollars per minute that had been set-up and in place.
ReplyDeleteAfter the house lights went up Manassas played the entire first side of the new LP after the 10:30 p.m. except they didn't play "Both Of Us (Bound To Lose)." It ended about 10:55 p.m. or so. The band was on fire!
Pretty sure the opening of the Stills/Young tour was held at the same venue and that show was amazing but ended exactly at 10:30 p.m. so I guess Stephen learned his lesson. Remember walking away from the venue after the Stills/Young show thinking that must have been what it was like to see the Buffalo Springfield. They really should have phoned Furay for the Stills/Young tour for him to join.
Was in the 10th row center for the '72 Manassas show and have a feeling this reviewer was closer where the sound goes over your head. The cover of Joni Mitchell's "Miles Of Aisles" is the seating at Pine Knob, btw. Pretty good review here of that show. The '73 shows by Manassas were not half as good as the '72 one I caught:

@ Dan - bummer that it turned into a sad night after the opening set. Guess Stills should have quit the gig while still ahead.
