Now streaming on NYA, Neil Young: LIVE AT VICAR STREET.

LIVE AT VICAR STREET, Directed by Ned O’Hanlon, is a 100-minute solo acoustic performance of Greendale, taken from a 3 night run at Vicar Street, Dublin, Ireland on 2003-05-11, 12 & 13 | Sugar Mountain.

A VERY SPECIAL EVENING WITH NEIL YOUNG

Neil plays in the Irish spirit while sipping a pint of Guinness during the concert while giving in depth explanations of each Greendale song. Neil says:
"These songs are about a little town called Greendale and a family that lives there outside of town in a little ranch called the Double E.

The Green family: Earl and Edith Green and their daughter, Sun Green. Sometimes Grandpa and Grandma come by, and Cousin Jed comes by too. They were just sitting on the porch when we dropped in on them for a minute.

The Double E is a ranch just outside of town, about two miles outside of Greendale
".

Neil comments on NYA:
"On an acoustic tour of Europe, playing ‘Greendale’ in small halls solo, I was on a unique journey, kind of a storyteller minstrel. Secretly . . . Elliot Roberts hired a crew and shot this show. i had no idea it was being filmed.

Gotta love Elliot! Without him, we have had no filmed record of this show."
'Carmichael' clocks in at 10:20, 'Grandpa's Interview' is about 13 minutes and 'Sun Green' is 12:03.

As noted here on TW in 2003, "Inside Greendale" replaced "Live at Vicar Street," the DVD of Neil Young's acoustic concert performance of "Greendale," part of the original two-disc package released in 2003, which also included a CD of the ten original songs that comprise the "Greendale" album.

  1. This is one of my all time favorite live performances from Neil. Such a personal approach to the material. A rich recording in a relaxed environment creating a remarkable performance. This would be my first choice for turning someone on to Greendale for the first time.

    Peace 🙏

    1. Dan: I haven't watched it from start to finish in a long time, but I enjoyed the Vicar street film too. This was something new for Neil, very original, outside his usual comfort zone as a performer. I thought he did a really great job.

I liked the way they included the DVD of this with the original CD release. I'm not impressed by constant re-issuing of the exact same CDs, but I'm glad they released the Inside Greendale DVD from this period; my favourite representation of electric Greendale that I think is more engaging and strikes a better balance than the original Greendale film.

  2. @Scotsman : I agree that Inside Greendale was definitely more vital and engaging than the actual film. Both DVD’s made purchasing Greendale twice on CD more than worthwhile. I also got the 200 gram vinyl box set of Greendale back in the day, and the sound quality is astonishing. Greendale is definitely best on vinyl.

Hopefully we’ll all be adding the live performances to our collections soon. Really looking forward to seeing the set in its entirety in a few months.

Also hoping for some details about Archive Volume 2 fairly soon as its release date is coming up. Neil has only mentioned a few things in response to some letters. Unfortunately, like Volume 1 we’ll probably be paying for titles we already own.

    Peace 🙏

  3. I was at this show (from my memory, it was entirely taken from one of the three nights, not from all three). It’s hard to get across how magic the performance was in real life (and the venue is pretty small). The second half of the show was a mix of hits and rarities, unbelievably good and I’m still utterly bamboozled as to why they weren’t included on the DVD too.
