In a posting on Times-Contrarian | Neil Young Archives, Neil Young writes that he's considering releasing all unreleased album projects for subscribers well in advance of their normal physical releases.
In response to a NYA Letter to the Editor by Uncle Eddie -- who is concerned about living long enough to ever hear the unreleased albums by Neil Young -- Neil reflects on his aging fan base and what to do.
Neil writes that he is looking to accomplish releasing everything in 2020.
And in other Neil Young news in the same A MESSAGE FROM NEIL, he writes about adjusting Hearse theater schedules and "The Facebook Dilemma".
Regarding "The Facebook Dilemma", Neil helpfully offers instructions on how to delete your Facebook account. Likewise, TW helpfully offers a "How To" video on how to delete your Facebook account.
"It is not easy to disengage, but it is possible." - Neil

So here's to Uncle Eddie! And who says that writing a Letter to the Editor is a waste of time?
Considering Neil’s past statements...... I’m cautiously optimistic.
ReplyDeletePeace.
I'll believe it when I... Who am I kidding? This ain't gonna happen.
ReplyDeleteYes, please.
ReplyDeleteLets see....... when was NYA Volume #2 coming? The vinyl release of Homegrown and Chrome Dreams???? Alchemy????? Oceanside / Country Side???? Toast????? I specifically remember reading that ALL of these were “COMING SOON”.
ReplyDeleteNYA Volume #1 was released June 2nd 2009 according to NYA website. It seems like we’ve been getting a lot of false promises over the years.
I’m not holding my breath, but if this does actually happen, I will be extremely grateful.
Peace.
Look at everything you've ever read about Neil. Everyone who's ever worked with him. YOU'RE SUPRISED??? But you're in the club, right? Be happy with what he actually does.
DeleteToast was "coming soon" in 2008.
ReplyDeleteSure hope so
ReplyDeleteMy biggest concern is that Neil gets properly paid for all those efforts. The subscription price is not enough. So unless he charges per release, he should reconsider.
ReplyDeleteI don't think we need to worry about NY's coffers.
Delete@Unknown : I agree with you. He should make a profit on anything he releases. I own everything he has ever released and I am happy to spend the money to honor his gift. Streaming has been ripping off artists long enough. Neil deserves to be compensated.
ReplyDeletePeace
I buy his DVD as I find them. Whatever he feels is best. Im with him til the end. His music has sustained me for 50yrs. 60 something Joe Detroit in Hudson Ny. Love you Neil.
ReplyDeleteI don't expect anything... the promises on NYA hearse theatre are not respected. Mirror Ball concert and Solo Trans one are not in the shedule list anymore... I guess they'll be back soon but it's disappointing...
ReplyDeleteI'm with Joe.....I'm thankful for anything and everything Neil does! I just hope to see him perform again though.....Hunter in NC.
ReplyDeleteDid I read somewhere NYA subs earns about $500,000 per month ? Im on facebook and luv it.easy to stay in the loop with friends far away... Im sure Neil has FB accout ? I don't get it if you put on FB what ya want to share then what's the problem?
ReplyDeleteWas on NYA, COULD NOT OPEN PAPER, COULD NOT WATCH MOVIES, COULD ONLY STREAM IN CD NOT HI RES, IM NOT KNOCKING NYA BUT I ALLREADY BOUGHT EVER CD OF EVERY ALBUM NEIL HAS PUT OUT THAT I LIKE WITCH IS MOST OF HIS STUFF, NEIL SHOULD MOST DEFINITELY GET PAID FOR HIS HARD WORK OVER MANY DECADES BUT HE NEEDS TO GET THE BUGS OUT OF NYA BEFORE HE REALISES ANY MORE STUFF, I MEAN ON NYA I ONLY WAS ABLE TO STREAM HIS MUSIC IN CD AND BESIDES SOME RARE LIVE MUSIC I OWN ALL THE CDS I WANT SO I SAID WHATS THE POINT? NEIL NEEDS TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO GET PAID FOR HIS MUSIC IN THE DIGITAL WORLD, AS A TOP TIER ACT IM SHURE NEIL CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HI RES AND CD BUT MOST OTHER PEOPLE CANT, HE WANTS IT ALL HI RES AND 1 SPECIFIC PLACE YOU MUST GO TO TO HERE HIS MUSIC BEFORE THAT PONO, HIS FAN BASE IS SERIOUSLY AGEING AND NOT GREAT WHEN IT COMES TO USEING TECHNOLOGY. GET THE BUGS OUT!
ReplyDeleteIf you're a NYA subscriber and can't open the Contrarian newspaper, watch the Hearse Theater, or stream any higher quality than CD, you haven't followed Neil's instructions on how to configure your system to avail of the hi res audio. If you're just using a phone it's probably a waste of time .
ReplyDeleteI've got Sony " smart tv" no NYA app there... can watch cast from android phone ok but not ideal. Wish it was linked to YouTube and then get reminders when some new is on in the Hearst....more Neil!
ReplyDeleteI must correct Steve Rust Downunder:
ReplyDeleteNYA has around 25,000 subscribers at the moment each paying about 2$ a month or less - that's max. 50,000$ not 500,000$. Considering all the start up costs, ongoing programming and editing, the technology involved in hi-res streaming, mobile app costs, extra rights to be paid for films etc. etc. I can certainly believe it when they say he isn't making any money with NYA at the moment. It is reported that it cost 7 figures to set up. It'll take time to get that back.
Technically it is all working very well. If flathtim76 is having problems, they almost certainly lie at his end not with NYA. You can get hi-res on mobile phones as well, in theory, but you normally won't hear it anyway unless you have DAC converter (100$ and worth it) but it's great anyway without.
And with streaming from Spotify, iTunes and co. no musician is making enough money from their records any more. We get so much back, especially from Neil, I think he deserves every cent we have given him - at least the part the record company doesn't keep.
Just my 5 cents worth. Opinions are all mine.
@Rasselas53:
ReplyDeleteExcellent points. I’m ready willing and able to purchase anything and everything Neil releases.
Peace.
@Unknown in regard to your comment "I don't expect anything... the promises on NYA hearse theatre are not respected. Mirror Ball concert and Solo Trans one are not in the schedule list anymore... I guess they'll be back soon but it's disappointing..."
ReplyDeleteI thought Neil made it very clear that when he received feedback from a listener who said that it was tough for working folks to watch the full-length movies on a weekday. Neil listened and decided to modify the theater schedule to now show the full-length movies on the weekends. Sure enough - Trans solo is now on the schedule on Nov 16th and 17th.
So yes, they took it off the schedule on a weekday, but based on their structural change - they needed to delay it until the next available weekend.
You might be disappointed that the movies have been re-scheduled, but you have to appreciate and respect the fact that the archives team are making changes because Neil has been listening to his core/base audience.
The explanations are often communicated to the fans, but if you (as an individual) skip over the details that are often provided - then I can understand why you'd feel disappointed. Don't blame Neil - his art is also a business. Despite his honest intentions, sometimes his art is managed by others, for the benefit of the business.
For example:

Yes my mistake $50000 per month still not to bad... think they should give a free 1 month trial with every concert ticket and CD and LP there alot of fans that don't know it exists...
ReplyDeleteThe Archives are great value even if you only dip in occasionally. However, Colorado on vinyl in the UK around £45 is regrettably beyond my budget. Other similar LPs are £25 so I will have to stick to CD but it's not the same.
