COLORADO: New Neil Young & Crazy Horse Album - Playback

Earlier this week, Neil Young held a playback of the upcoming album with Crazy Horse titled COLORADO, per Times-Contrarian | NYA.

The posting also notes that the record is dedicated to Elliot Roberts. "Elliot loved this record. He said “It's the songs.” "

The previous tentative, working title of the new Neil Young & Crazy Horse's album was "Pink Moon". Last April, Neil Young announced that he was in the studio with Crazy Horse recording an album of new songs.

The band jammed on April 20 under a full moon while recording high up in the Rocky Mountains in Telluride, Colorado. And the sessions appear to be very fruitful with Neil reporting that as of 04-22-19 "8 songs now recorded". Earlier, Neil Young disclosed that the new album will have 11 new songs, ranging from 3 minutes to 14 minutes of music each, which: "We believe we have a great Crazy Horse album, one to stand alongside ‘Everybody Know’s this is Nowhere’, ‘Rust Never Sleeps’, Sleeps With Angels’, ‘Psychedelic Pill’ and all the others."

On THE TELLURIDE SESSIONS: Part One John Hanlon, “Senior Chief” Recording Engineer, describes setting and recording the sessions in the Telluride studio. Later, posted in June, THE TELLURIDE SESSIONS: Part Two, Hanlon discusses more details on recording the Crazy Horse sessions, in a new and completely different approach.

The tentative, working title of the new, upcoming Neil Young & Crazy Horse's album is "Pink Moon" per the posting for Album Of The Week | NYA.

Neil Young wrote on NYA that "Pink Moon" is "one of the most diverse albums I have ever made". Neil Young also indicates that a "Full Scale Crazy Horse Tour" tour is in the works. 3. A tour in support of this album would be great, especially if Sampedro came out of retirement.

  5. Very interested in hearing what this version of Crazy Horse sounds like coming out of the studio. With Nils in the 2nd guitar slot, I'm expecting the subtle blues of TTN or Sleeps With Angels, not the bone-crunching of a Ragged Glory. The way they apparently recorded it has me wonderin, though, changing things up in the studio hasn't always fit the Horse well. We shall see.

I also like the new title better, Colorado sounds Crazy Horse-ish. Plus it's kind of a nice nod to Stills.

  18. I'm probably in a minority here, but I was underwhelmed by the Hyde Park corporate fiasco. Frankly bored with the pyrotechnics of POTR, the rehashing of a combination of over familiar and unambitious crowd favourites for a sunny day with too much 'Ragged Glory'. I felt Neil was in urgent need of new material to keep the creative juices flowing. Glad that he seems to have found his muse again because the performances have become stale of late - in the 'going through the motions' variety. Just my opinion.

  19. POTR pyrotechnics. I agree. They are designed to cover up musical inadequacies. Compare the gyrations of Micah with the steady grandeur of Poncho, always adding but never seeking to up stage Neil; the two indifferent percussionists with the class of Ralph Molina; and the foundations of Billy's bass.

I think that POTR are the sad equivalent of a middle age purchase of a sports car.

Neil solo or Neil and Crazy horse are where I see and hear Neil at his best. Neil and POTR - no thank you.

    You are not alone Unknown.

    Roll on Colorado

  20. I couldn't agree more Julia. It's telling that the last piece of work of note by Neil was with Crazy Horse - Psychedelic Pill. As you say, roll on Colorado.
