DISCOVERED: Original "Thrasher" Lyrics | Neil Young Archives

Original "Thrasher" Lyrics
NEW MANUSCRIPT! : (It was hiding behind hay bales)

Neil Young Archives

A major discovery has been announced on the discovery of the original lyrics for Neil Young's song "Thrasher".

The Archives Team posts on NYA that:
Thrasher has been in heavy rotation on this year’s setlists, and we’re pretty thrilled about that; if The Archives Team were to make our own featured playlist this tune would probably come first. [emphasis added]

So, to celebrate: we dug up the original (nine page!) manuscript for this delectable tune.
The nine page original lyric manuscripts for Neil Young's epic, immortal and legendary song "Thrasher" reveal several telling lyric changes made during the evolution from writing to 1st performance. While it is quite difficult to determine exactly what Neil may have originally written, might Neil have softened some of "Thrasher"'s harshness?

Here's what Neil himself had to say about writing the song "Thrasher" on NYA:
"I wrote ‘Thrasher’ in a car on my way to Albuquerque from Taos New Mexico. I was being driven by Carpio, a native American who I was introduced to by Dennis Hopper filming Human Highway. . . . ."

UPDATE: NYA update on song "Thrasher":

"After leaving Taos with Carpio, a Native American friend I had met during the filming of Human Highway, sitting in the front seat of his car, I wrote this song, Thrasher.

Driving through the magnificent beauty of New Mexico, the words just kept coming to me. I saw the eagles circling, the deep canyons, the road ahead, reflecting on my journey through recent years, and thankful to be where I was."

We here at Thrasher's Wheat would be very interested to hear what others might think Neil's original intent and where the song evolved. Why's that you ask? Follow us out to the fields of wheat where we'll be hiding behind hay bales ...

  1. Innarresting....

I have an idea. How about NYA allows Thrasher/Thrashete to complete and post their celebrity playlist for the site in honor of the discovery? Only seems appropriate.

  2. 2 different posts here, both dealing w/ "Uncut".
    Firstly, they are selling "something".
    Subscriptions? Single Editions?
    I haven Fallen Prey Before.....
give me something to sink my teeth into. Not same ol' re-hash of old news.....

  3. @RTG - thanks great idea. TW would be honored to submit a "curated" playlist for NYA!

@FY - hmm. possibly this comment is mis-placed?

    Try http://neilyoungnews.thrasherswheat.org/2019/03/contest-uncut-magazine-neil-young.html

also, possible misunderstanding here?? Not selling. It's a contest. Free stuff giveaway.

As noted in issue review link below, new interviews w/ CH included. So, not "Not same ol' re-hash of old news."

    hope that helps!

  4. Bit of a mind blowing experience reading this NYA post one day and seeing Graham Nash in concert a day later. He playedIUsed to be a King so he knew his exalted singer songwriter status when he was with Joni. But he and Crosby and Stills had no idea how they fossilized with fame they became in 69-70. We and Neil are so fortunate he's an introvert who can see things more clearly than most and isn't afraid to act to stay ahead of the Thrashers when he hears them coming.

  5. @ Hounds That Howl - yeah, a tad mind blowing.

Always nice to see Graham in concert and hear Joni, CSNY, Hollies/Buddy Holly stories and songs.

    ahh, those songs.

The times they are a changing and all for the better, all along the watchtower...

ya know, The Joker and The Thief rendezvous this summer w/ *The Band* That Gets REAL.

    anything can happen.

    any thing

    p&l
