A little something different today...

ReplyDelete"Anyway, I just wanted to share my experience first hearing Neil Young's song, "Heart of Gold". It was the Winter of 1972, and I was 9 years old. Early in 1971, my family and I had moved from a simple ranch house in Elkhart, Indiana to an old 2-story farmhouse in Elkhart that my father had a contractor remodel. (The house was not then on a farm, but was in a relatively new subdivision that had developed on what had been the farm.)
The remodeled farmhouse was very nice, and had a family room addition that was just off the kitchen, but about 2' (three steps) lower. There was a metal railing that protected a person from falling from the kitchen into the family room, with two sets of steps on opposite sides of the family room going to the kitchen. I mention all that because my father had a stereo system installed in one wall of the kitchen (basically a high-quality radio, with two-way speaker capability to all the bedrooms and basement). That stereo was also connected to dual speakers built into opposite ends of the "knee-wall" under the metal railing. It was pretty awesome, especially for a 9-year-old.
I first heard Neil Young's song, "Heart of Gold", early one evening in the Winter of 1972, when I was alone in the house. I was lying on the sofa that was against the knee-wall, between the two speakers. I had the radio on, with the music coming into the family room from the built-in speakers. When "Heart of Gold" began playing, it seemed to me as if the message was from God, and was for me (I knew neither was technically true, but it was the feeling/impression I had).
It was such a beautiful song, full of longing and disappointment and hope. It seemed to me as if God was expressing His search for someone "with a heart of gold", and He was "testing" me to see if I might be such a person. (Again, that's just the impression, or imagination, I had.)
It was a very emotional, almost spiritual, experience for me. And that song still remains one of my favorites, and can easily bring a tear to my eye. "
The live piano rendition of One More Sign from a solo show in Philly brings tears to my eyes. It keeps playing in my head and won't stop. But that's perfectly fine with me. Just have to mop up my puddle. ðŸ˜
