December 1st will be a big day for me.
The Visitor will be coming to your town. I will be going to my town. You will be able to hear me and see me. My archive will open on that same day, a place you can visit and experience every song I have ever released in the highest quality your machine will allow. It’s the way it’s supposed to be. In the beginning, everything is free.

ReplyDeleteI just checked out Neil's web site and there is a NYA link that says it will open soon. In the note from Neil there is mention of resolution options and purchasing, so I'm still confused about the word FREE.
As I mentioned earlier, I'm more than willing to buy this music, but I prefer to have a physical product as apposed to downloads.

Does anyone one know if Archives 2 will include any of Neil's "Tonight Show" performances esp. "Who's Gonna Stand", I think from the Jimmy Fallon show.
ReplyDeleteI think that the "Purchasing" refers to playback equipment. Not the sound files. Looks like Shakey Deal will be recommending what he thinks is the best hardware to experience this archive with. Maybe sound cards, or speakers, or other DLNA networked gadgets to get a great sound. Who knows...

ReplyDeleteWell, I hope that I can buy the "unreleased" stuff in physical form since he mentioned we will be able to listen to the "released" stuff on the Archives timeline. Have the box sets 1-4 and 8.5 - 12 and the sound quality is amazing but my computer set-up has a lot to be desired in terms of power and speakers.
ReplyDeleteHave a feeling that Neil Young is pretty much in the same position as Gillian Welch and David Rawlings but is more well known than them but they all have deep archives since they have each (Neil, Dave & Gillian) recorded pretty much, or nearly all, of their live shows.
"It used to always be that records and concert tickets cost the same. Half your money came from records, and half your money came from playing live shows. And now, basically none of your money comes from records [laughs] and all of your money comes from the road. It’s slowing down the creative process, because the road, while it’s lovely, and I love playing live, it slows down putting out records. However slow I was before, I’m going to be slower now." Gillian Welch in Paste interview a couple of months ago.
BTW, I was the one who got Gillian Welch (and David Rawlings) to play a Neil Young song at the Cat's Cradle that came out on their live DVD back in the day. Impressed the heck out of my three teenage sons at the time who I had brought along for the taping. Bill Bost, at Acoustic Stage, and I used to request obscure Neil Young songs and sometimes they'd do one. They often did an off the cuff cover they worked up that day which would be unique to the show that day on their tours. They've done wonderful versions of "Time Fades Away," "Cortez The Killer," "Tired Eyes," a stunning version of "Albuquerque," and they were doing "Country Girl" a long time before they did it with Neil at the Bridge show among many other Neil covers.
One time I put together a dozen of Gillian Welch's covers from soundboards and one of the people who requested it was Pete Rawlings (who turned out to be David's dad). After he got it from me he said they were coming to Thanksgiving dinner and could he get fifteen more copies from me. Wasn't sure if I should be flattered or get a lawyer? It was all good and I even met Pete under what can only be described as spooky circumstances at Merlefest a few years later that is sort of the definition of synchronicity.
Someone put up the Gillian Welch "covers" bootleg on iTunes which I had called "Live and Obscure" that was a Townes Van Zandt reference but it gets a bit torrent every so often, too.
