For Nelson, growing up one of the sons of Willie Nelson came with plenty of perks. Like constantly being surrounded by music legends.Full interview from Lukas Nelson Talks Spiritual Connection with Neil Young and Defying Expectations | Wide Open Country by Jeremy Burchard.
“I started playing in my dad’s band at first, and then my own band,” Nelson says. Then, when he and the band got a chance to jam with Neil Young after the 2014 Farm Aid, Young invited the band to record and tour with him.
“I think it’s just a spiritual connection we have with the music,” Nelson says of the band’s relationship with Young. “It just feels right when we’re hanging out and playing together. I’m recording a new record with Neil right now. It’s just a beautiful connection.”
It’s also a pretty damn good education. The band brings a youthful energy to Young’s shows and he teaches them lessons learned over a 50-year career.
“Neil is obviously our spiritual priority with the music,” Nelson says. “Nobody is around forever, so we just learn. We’re soaking it up, trying to give him what he needs for these songs. For the music he hears in his head. And then we take that and apply it to our own music and it just compounds. There’s no downside to it.”
It is remarkable how Promise of the Real has picked up the baton. Everyone raves about the energy of the live shows. While a year ago, the United states stewed divided in election fever, the band The Tragically Hip united our country, Canada, as one family, one night last August. Roughly one third of the country tuned in. In a nation wide telecast, edging on their leader Gord Downey, who is suffering brain cancer, they gave a brilliant display of the power of a band of minstrels to conjure sweet life out of the threat of death.
ReplyDeleteMy point is, keep on rockin' indeed.
Having seen PotR with Neil Young twice, and having enjoyed their music immensely thus far, I am thrilled that another Neil Young / PotR album is "In the Can." Neil's "no practice" ethic might not have served the Monsanto Years as well as it could have. The live album is great. Seeing them play live was beyond great. I cannot wait for another album from these guys. Mining the deep catalogue in a way that Crazy Horse cannot, perhaps. This is bound to inflame some fans, to think that its even possible for PotR to ECLIPSE Crazy Horse. Personally, I am just glad the epic music is still flowing, being released, for us to hear. I love Crazy Horse. My 1st Tattoo is going to be the rider on horseback logo. But Neil's got to follow the muse. Might as well celebrate it. To have Neil, still doing it, with this band… its wonderful. Yes, I had an awesome time seeing Neil with Crazy Horse for the Alchemy tour, right up front. Oh my. But more is on the way. Its best to let it flow. I know that I am willing to drive hundreds of miles to see them play live. I drive a Hybrid, so don't worry about the carbon emissions on my behalf. Alan in Seattle.
