ReplyDeleteGretsch vs. Old Black?
If you could only hear one Neil song on each, which 2 songs would you choose?
Are there any songs you wish he'd have played with the other guitar?
Any other thoughts are welcomed, from the technical perspective to various memories of each.
I'm still formulating my thoughts...

I like both, they are very different instruments. Gretsch has that folky twang, Old Black is both cutting and smooth at the same time. Old Black is a lead instrument. The Gretsch was traditionally a rhythm instrument, with Ben Keith playing beautiful lead on pedal steel. But it can be used quite effectively for lead, too. E.g Words.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised (in a good way) that Revolution Blues was played on Old Black in April.
That was great; that was the moment that this band really started to click. It was magical. The people in the audience were lucky. Up until that point it was easily the best performance I'd heard with this band; but there are more than a few other contenders now.
But anyway, I always assumed it was a Gretsch song.

For me Old Black is synonymous with Neil Young. Could not choose just one song.
ReplyDeleteNo doubt Pocahontas, I hear you and agree. As Neil has often said, "it's all one song" and Old Black has always been there with him...
ReplyDeleteThat being said, if I had to choose one Old Black song it would be "like a Hurricane" which to me contains his most magical lyrical playing. The song is immediately recognizable and those first glorious soaring poetic notes set the tone perfectly.
I swear I can hear and feel Neil's heart, soul and mind in those first notes. Then he expands on them taking us on a journey of hope, excitement and doubtful optimism where the words and music are forever intertwined and become one and the same.

I think the guitar on the original Revolution Blues from OTB is a Telecaster or Broadcaster.

It may have been the Gretsch in 74. On both Motion Pictures and Revolution Blues from OTB, his soloing (and these are some of my favorites), the Fender sound combined with the Bigsby and his touch create a sound that I have only heard on that record. I am just guessing that it's a tele, but it sure sounds like it to me.
